Miscellaneous deeds and documents (Wynnstay estate sales)

Miscellaneous files containing mainly draft and copy conveyances of properties belonging to the Wynnstay estate, sold by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and/or the trustees of the settled estates in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, and the Maenan estate, Caernarfonshire, 1840-1938. Fields and unnamed properties generally have not been included in the file descriptions.

Montgomeryshire deeds and documents

Mainly agreements for sale, conveyances, particulars and conditions of sale for lands and timber in Montgomeryshire sold by the Wynnstay estate, 1853-1897. The locations include Hirnant, Llanerfyl, Llanfyllin, Llanfair Caereinion, Llangadfan, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanwddyn, Montgomery, Pennant Melangell, Trefeglwys and Welshpool. One file concerns the sale of Llwydiarth estate timber, 1870. Others relate to the Arwystli chief rents, 1881, and the Wynnstay Arms, Llanfyllin, 1891.

Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire deeds and documents

Conveyances, agreements, particulars, conditions of sale and other documents relating to the sale of parts of the Wynnstay estates in Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire, 1853-1921, and the estate timber, 1853[x1870]. The lands included the Maenan estate, 1856-1858, and part of the Cefn estate, sold for building development in Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen, 1891-1921.

Miscellaneous deeds (Wales and Salop)

Miscellaneous draft conveyances to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustees, Edward James Earl of Powis and Hugh Williams, of houses and lands purchased, exchanged or mortgaged, mainly in the parish and townships of Ruabon but also including properties in Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Wrexham and elsewhere in Denbighshire, Llangurig in Montgomeryshire, and Llanuwchllyn and other parishes in Merioneth, 1842-1865. There is also an abstract of title to the Llwyn-y-maen and Horseley estates in Salop and Flintshire respectively, 1752-1782.

Montgomeryshire deeds

Title deeds and associated documents relating to purchases by the Wynnstay estate of lands in the parishes of Meifod, Llanwrin and Llanbryn-mair, Montgomeryshire, 1836-1945. The properties include Fridd Farm, Meifod, purchased from the Powis Castle estate in 1899-1900.

Denbighshire and Flintshire deeds

Title deeds and associated documents relating to purchases and exchanges by the Wynnstay estate of lands in Denbighshire and Flintshire, 1859-1927. Two separate files concern Teathams Farm in the parish of Ruabon, 1859-1876. Others relate to property in Rhos Stansty, Wrexham, 1869-1881, in Ruthin, 1881, lands at Gresford taken for the Great Western Railway, 1880-1881, mines and minerals, and Rutters Farm in the parish of Erbistock, 1907-1927

Deeds for land purchases by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn

Title deeds relating to farms and lands purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, situated mainly in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1582-1837. The properties include the Rhosfawr and Dyffryn estates, purchased in 1803, Pentrego, Maes-y-wern, Pen-y-coed, Main, Ceunant, etc., purchased 1806, Tyddyn y Cae Du in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1810, Allt Fawr purchased 1811, Peniarth Farm purchased 1812, Mathrafal or New Bridges in Llangynyw, and Gelly in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1813-1814. Among the former owners of the properties were Evan Meredith and his son David Evans of Mathrafal, the Phillips family of Pentrego, Humffreys (Humphreys) of Llwyn, Parry of Main and Penyvoil, Williams and Davies of Peniarth, Montgomeryshire, Richard Rocke of Trefnannu and Shrewsbury, Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Buckinghamshire, William Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse and Thomas Owen Jones of Bishopsgate Street, London.
Many of the deeds are extremely complex and it may be necessary to search more than one file in the chronological sequence below, in order to trace all of the deeds relating to a single property.
Found with the deeds is the original schedule compiled in 1849, and a deed not listed in the schedule, 1853.

Probate records of several members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, comprising mainly copies, abstracts and transcripts of the wills of Sir John Wynn and Sir William Williams, 1710-1735; Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 1840-1876; Grenville Watkin Williams Wynn, 1865-1924; and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and Dowager Lady Williams Wynn, 1884-1905.

Caerhun/Llanbedrycennin/Llangelynnin title deeds

Title deeds relating mainly to properties acquired by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, his brother Richard Gwynne and Edward Williams, whose widow Grace married Richard Gwynne in 1602, situated in the townships of Penfro, Castell, Glyn and Gronant, often combining more than one of these townships and overlapping the parish boundaries of Caerhun, Llanbedrycennin and Llangelynnin. Indexes to vouchers

From 1889 onwards, the vouchers are bound according to the estate, i.e. Home, Wynnstay, Glan-llyn, Llanbryn-mair, Llangedwyn, Llanforda, Llwydiarth. The indexes to vouchers after 1889 are likewise bound according to the estate. Thus, for example, VIF1 (1890) is an index to the Llanforda Estate Vouchers V54 (1890). Each index is arranged alphabetically according to the name on the voucher to whom payment is made, together with the number of the page on which the voucher is to be found in the appropriate bound volume of vouchers.

Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals

This collection comprises the following: (i) Wynnstay fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Erbistock, Llangollen, Llandisilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Erbistock is omitted from 1880, Llansanffraid from 1888, and Llanarmon from 1917. Wynnstay fee farm rents, 1860-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (Ii) Ruthin fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaiadr yng Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm, and Ruthin. Llanfair is omitted from 1877, and Llanrhaiadr from 1880. Ruthin fee farm rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. (iii) Cynllaith Owain chief rents, comprising property in p. Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas). Estynallan and Sycharth are omitted from 1880, Moelfre from 1886, Rhiwlas from 1889, and Priddbwll from 1915. Cynllaith Owen chief rents, 1808-1896, are also contained in the series of general rentals, and also in the Llangedwyn estate rentals. Llangurig (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vii) Llanidloes parish tithes, comprising property in t's Brithdir, Cilmachallt, Hengynwydd, Treflyn. Tithes for p. Llanidloes (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (viii) Trefeglwys parish tithes, comprising property in t's Glyntrefnant and Esgeiredd, together with p. Llanbryn-mair. Tithes for p. Trefeglwys (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1866 (RB4) the Glan-llyn chief rents, collected at Michaelmas, are added, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel-y-traethau, and boats on Bala Lake. Boats on Bala Lake are omitted from 1874, property in Trawsfynydd and Llanfihangel-y-traethau are omitted from 1880, and in Llangywer from 1914. Glan-llyn chief rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1890-1892 (RB14) Plas Madoc tithes, collected on 1 Jan., are added, comprising property in p. Ruabon (t. Cristionydd Cynrig). From RB17 (1899-1901) to RB21 (1911-13) the Cynllaith Owain chief rents are omitted. With regard to the covering dates in this series, the fee farm and chief rents were collected at Michaelmas and the tithes were collected on 1 Jan. The rental dated, for example 1893-1895, includes collection sheets for chief rents due Michaelmas 1892-1894 and tithe rents due 1 Jan. 1893-1895.

Vouchers

The general series of vouchers consists of vouchers relating to accounts found in the general series of rentals R119-R153 (1864-1899) and account books Ai 1-2 (1900-1902). Indexes to the vouchers for the period 1878-1919 are available in series Vig. The vouchers are bound in volumes. These volumes may be as much as 12" thick and one may weigh perhaps 20lb.
