Machynlleth title deeds

Title deeds of houses, tenements and lands in the town and parish of Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, 1440-1697, and in the townships of Isygarreg, 1560-1683, and Uwchygarreg, 1567-1694. The early deeds provide information about the layout of the town in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, together with the names and occupations of some of the inhabitants, notably in the textile and glove-making trades. Some files record streets which still exist and their earlier alternative names. The deeds record acquisitions mainly by the Pughe family of Mathafarn during the seventeenth century. Other prominent names include Oliver Herbert, the families of Owen, Vaughan and ap Richard/Prichard of Machynlleth, Ll'n ap Res ap Ieuan ap Gwilkoc and his descendants, and occasionally, Owen of Peniarth. Witnesses include bailiffs of the town.

Arbitration awards

Arbitration awards, associated bonds andother related papers involving the Pryse family of Gogerddan and other individuals, mainly in Cardiganshire, 1441-1894. They are filed as miscellaneous Cardiganshire arbitration awards, 1441-1690, (Watermark 1817), 1882; Pryse family arbitration awards, 1567-1885; a non-litigated dispute at Derwenlas, 1857; the arbitration concerning crown lands in the manor of Perfedd, 1864-1888; and an arbitration concerning Glanfraed Farm 1883-1894. The content of the earlier files is varied and includes a dispute surrounding the deaths of Gruffith Prothero and David ap Gruffith Prothero, involving the Meredith and Glays families of Aberystwyth, 1441. Other arbitrations concern Sir Richard Pryse in the wardship and marriage of Katheryn Wynn, 1592; and land disputes in Aberystwyth, Llanbadarn Fawr, Cynnull Mawr, Llangynfelyn, Elerch and Clarach 1550-1690.

Loose bills and receipts (general)

Bundles of loose general bills and receipts (vouchers) of the Gogerddan estate, 1474-1927. Some bundles also include relevant letters and copies of the agents’ completed accounts. The earlier bundles contain a variety of different bills and receipts of Sir Richard Pryse, Mary Pryse of Glanmeryn, Thomas Pryse, John Pughe Pryse, Edward Loveden Loveden and Pryse Pryse. From around 1850 to 1880 the contents are more regularised, comprising similar items in each year. They have not been examined in detail. They typically record payments for estate labour and wages, particularly for gamekeeping, gardening, forestry work and fencing; for building materials, repairs and improvements to Gogerddan mansion and other properties; salaries and expenses of the Gogerddan and Abernantbychan agents; seeds and plants; estate surveys and valuations; interest and annuities; solicitors’ charges; auctioneers’ fees; dinners for the tenants on rent days; subscriptions and salaries for the schools at Borth, Clarach, Commins Coch and Taliesin (Llangynfelyn), and the Welsh Charity School at Deptford; land and property tax; crown rents; chief rents; tithe rent charges; poor rates of Aberystwyth and Machynlleth Unions; highway rates; charities; refurbishments and cleaning the [Pryse] monument in Llanbadarn Fawr church; carriage of goods; Aberystwyth and London tradesmen’s bills for commodities and services; Penrhyn-coch curate’s stipend. Individual items of interest are noted at file level.

Miscellaneous Gogerddan and other Cardiganshire deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands in the several combined parishes of Caron, Llanbadarn Odwyn, Llanddewibrefi and Llanbadarn Odwyn, 1549-1676, and
Creuddyn, Clarach and Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1592-1636, as well as in the separate parishes of Llandysilio [Gogo], 1476, Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, 1544-1590, Nancwnlle, 1569, Cwmystwyth, Llangwyryfon and Ysbyty Ystwyth, 1578-1622, Llanwnnen, 1586, Llanfihangel Ystrad, 1859-1862, Llanddewi Aber-arth (Aberaeron), 1861, the manor of Creuddyn, 1878, and Llanbadarn Fawr (Bont-goch), 1881, where the numbers of deeds are too small to create a separate series for each parish. There are also original bundles of final concords and deeds, 1494-1726, bonds where the parish is not specified at all, 1512-1674, an inquisition post-mortem John Pryse, 1585; and agreements for the purchase of rights in crown lands in the lordships of Creuddyn and Cyfoethybrenin, 1862-1865.

Seals, fragments, labels, wrappers etc.

Seals, fragments of documents, labels and wrappers, [16th cent]-1960. Most of these were found detached from the original documents, with the exception of the ‘Old Schedule’ labels, which were removed to accommodate the new arrangement.

Trust documents of the Caethle estate

Deeds, 1505-1712, relating to the Caethle estate in the parish of Tywyn, Merioneth, owned by the Vaughan family, for whom William Pughe of Mathafarn was a trustee in 1677. The names of John Lloyd of Maesypandy and the Nanney family recur frequently [probably as earlier trustees to William Vaughan]. The Gogerddan family also appears to have had an early interest, as shown by the will of John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1584 (see ref.), and a lease of a property in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) made by Sir Richard Pryse in 1604/5. James Pryse married into the family of Ynysymaengwyn, also in the locality of Tywyn. The series contains title deeds of properties mainly in the townships of Caethle, Aberdyfi (Aberdovey), Cefnrhos and Botalog, and St Cadfan’s lands, 1505-1668; mortgages, 1664-1676; family settlements which pre-date the start of the trust, 1591-1629, as well as deeds within the operation of the trust itself, 1660-1726. There is also a file of deeds of the Nanney and Lloyd families, which has been linked tentatively to the Caethle trust, 1681-1701.
