Exemplification of a fine re. messuages in Mathavarn wyon and Pentraith

Exemplification of a fine levied between William Hookes of Conwey, plaintiff, and David ap Res ap Ll'n ap Gruff' and Angharat verch David his wife, deforciants, on Monday before the feast of the translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 1534, when the deforciants acknowledged five messuages in Mathavarn wyon and Pentraith, to be the right of the plaintiff. Manuscripts, many of which were written by or for Edward Wynne, LLD, DCL, Chancellor of the diocese of Hereford (d. 1755), and by several members of the important families with which he was connected.

Welsh and English poetry

A seventeenth-century manuscript in several hands, containing englynion, cywyddau, carolau, dyriau and other poems in free metre in Welsh and English. The following are some of the poets represented: Tudur Aled, Sion Tuder, Gytto'r Glyn, John Brwynog, Thomas Powel, Robert ap Hugh Delyniawr, Rowland Vaughan, Hugh and John Kenricke, Syr Hugh David o Sir Henford, Syr Hugh Roberts, Robin Ddu and Ficker Llan ddyfri. Among the poems in free are 'Ymddiddanen rhwng Mr. John Gruffyth a Richard Boulkley' (ff. 45-46 verso), a second poem on a similar theme (ff. 19 verso-20), published as 'Ymddiddan rhwng Mr. John Griffith, Llanddyfnan, a'i ewythr Mr. Bwlclai, yn 1647' in Hen Gerddi Gwleidyddol 1588-1660, Cymdeithas Llen Cymru 2 (Cardiff, 1901), pp. 16-18; and a copy of 'Karol y wraig o ganan' (ff. 80-81 verso) which differs slightly from that published in Casgliad o Hanes-Gerddi Cymraeg, Cymdeithas Llen Cymru 4 (Cardiff, 1903), pp. 11-15.

A small group of records relating mainly to the family of Wynne of Bodewryd, Anglesey, comprising: six title deeds of properties in Cregryst, Conishiog-Lys, Heneglwys, Holyhead, Isallt, Llandrygarn, Llangristiolys, Llechgwenfarwy, Llysdulas, Tregadrodd, Trelowarch, Trevirior and Uchdryd, Anglesey, 1608, 1680-1685 (items 1-2, 5-8); a precept to take the oath of a petty constable for the parish of Rhosgolin, 1680 (item 3); letters of administration of the goods and Chattels of Elizabeth verch Rees, otherwise Woods, of the parish of Holyhead, Anglesey, granted to her husband William Woods of the said parish, 18 December 1682 (item 4); three letters from Wm Kinaston to John Owen of Penrhos, near Holyhead, 1687/8-1707, relating to legal actions (items 9-11); a grant of the advowson of the curacy of the impropriate parochial chapel of Bodewrid, 1724/5 (item 12); and plaintiff's observations (partly autograph), minutes and an order, 1725/6-1727, in the suit of Edward Wynne, LL.D., chancellor of the diocese of Hereford, against William Mostyn [of Castle, Montgomeryshire] and others, touching the purchase of lands in [Bodedern, Llanfair-yn-neubwll, Rhoscolyn, and Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf, Anglesey] (items 13-15).
Also included is a covering letter, 23 March 1957, from the donor to the National Museum of Wales, relating the recent history of the documents.

Genealogies of Anglesey

A volume of genealogies of Anglesey families, mostly of the maternal descent. Also included are a cywydd by Ie[u]an Tew Brydydd, 'Kowydd i ofyn cyngor i'r llwynog' by Hugh Lloid (Cynfel) (pp. 156-157) and a poem in free metre, written in 1636.
Five fragments of parchment have been pasted in on pp. 171, 173, 175, 177 and 179.
