Cary [ ], The British Broadcasting Corporation, Bron Castell, High Street, Bangor. Has to tell his closest friend that the University of Wales has resolved to award him the degree of D. Litt. honoris causa. When he was told the news by Tom Parry, he could have cried. Much appreciates that the old University has remembered him and has honoured his contribution to the Welsh nation over the years. The ceremony will take place at Aberystwyth on 11 July. This is all totally confidential, and no-one else knows about it. Thinks that it would be wisest not to refer to what happened at Cardiff. An opportunity may come after the writer has finished with the BBC. Huw T. Edwards should not, therefore, include that article in the volume. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards agrees with all this. Welsh.

Cassie Davies, Cwm Tudur, Tregaron. Had meant to write to Huw T. Edwards sooner immediately following the exciting news at the Eisteddfod. Admires Huw T. Edwards's action greatly and his plans for the future. A leader of Huw T. Edwards's extensive experience of Welsh public life will strengthen and give direction to the campaign for a parliament on Welsh soil. Huw T. Edwards's assistance is sorely needed, and his action has given them new heart and renewed hope. Although Huw T. Edwards has done so much to look after the best interests of Wales from within the ranks of the Labour Party, she ventures to predict that Wales will lie more heavily in his debt in future than ever before. Welsh.

Catherine Roberts, Llangwyfan, Denbigh. Admires Huw T. Edwards's resignation from the Chairmanship and membership of the Council for Wales greatly. It required courage to stand up for his principles. The future of Wales is assured as long as there are men like Huw T. Edwards who are prepared to lead. Welsh.

Charles Hill, Minister for Welsh Affairs, Whitehall, London SW1. The tie was a pleasant surprise. An emblematic tie which is also fit to wear is something of a rarity.
