Correspondence and other papers of Ned Thomas, 1984-2000, relating to the poet R. S. Thomas, comprising fourteen letters and cards, in Welsh, 1984-1991, from R. S. Thomas to Ned Thomas (ff. 1-14); letters to Ned Thomas from Rudolf G. Carpanini, 1984 (ff. 15-16), and Patchy Wheatley, 1986 (f. 17); papers concerning his nomination for the Nobel Prize for Literature, 1995-1996 (ff. 18-56); and obituaries, 2000 (f. 57, 58 verso-59).

Personal letters to William and Penny Condry mainly by R.S. Thomas and his wife, Mildred Elsie Eldridge (Elsi) and more recently his second wife, Betty, written from Aberdaron vicarage, Sarn y Plas at Y Rhiw, Pwllheli, Llanfair-yng-Nghornwy near Holyhead, Presteigne and Llanfrothen, 1968-1998. The letters discuss mostly the correspondents’ mutual interest in ornithology and other wildlife, frequently referring to the start of the RSPB reserve at Ynyshir and Condry’s wardenship, and the maintenance of Bardsey Island as a nature reserve. Other topics include gardening, publishing, Thomas’s family, his attitude to the Welsh language and his personal beliefs; there are touches of unexpected humour. The letters from Elsi Thomas sometimes include her own sketches and drawings. The file also includes a letter to William Condry from the artist Meg [Stevens], 1984, letters from Thomas’s biographer Justin Wintle, 1995-1996, and press-cuttings about R.S. Thomas, [post-1985]-1993.

A letter, 2 October 1990, from the poet R. S. Thomas to Tom Ellis, former MP for Wrexham, regarding a controversial speech by Thomas on the movement of non-Welsh speaking immigrants into the Welsh language heartland (f. 95, Welsh). Also included is a postcard, 1998, sent by Thomas to Ellis reacting to an article concerning Seamus Heaney in Prospect Magazine (f. 96, Welsh).
Accompanying the letter is a cutting of an article by Ellis ('British justice in the dock', Western Mail, 1 October 1990, p. 10) concerning Thomas' speech (f. 94, English).

Over a hundred and fifty letters, 1961-88 in English, Welsh and French, from various correspondents (surnames Jones-W). The letters, some of which include fair copies of published poems, are chiefly concerned with contemporary writing in Wales in both English and Welsh and with the recipient's work as editor of a number of volumes in this field. The correspondents include Glyn Jones (36, and three poems) 1967-86, Gwyn Jones (6) 1967-87, Saunders Lewis (1) 1974, Roland Mathias (17) 1961-86, Leslie Norris (32, and one poem) 1967-86, Eigra Lewis Roberts (2) 1970-3, R. S. Thomas (1) 1975, John Tripp (8) 1968-78, Harri Webb (14) 1967-79, and Kyffin Williams (8) 1970-1.

Fourteen letters and cards, 1972-1984, from the poet R. S. Thomas to various correspondents, mainly in response to requests that he sign copies of his books.
The recipients include Colin Huggett, 1973-1980 (ff. 7-10), and Satish Kumar, 1984 (f. 11, photocopy).

Over one hundred and seventy-five letters, 1951-[1970s], from Timothy Hanley to her son, Liam P. Hanley, containing mainly personal news and comments on the progress of her husband's writing as well as her own literary and artistic work. Also included are letters to James Hanley from other relatives and friends, notably R. S. Thomas (5) 1959-[1984], and from the artist Gladys Vasey to the writer Reginald Graham Moore (1) 1949, both the latter being friends of the Hanleys.

Three letters, 1963, 1966, 1970 (ff. 157-159), from R. S. Thomas to the author and book collector Eric Quayle, thanking him for a donation for the village school at Eglwysfach, Cardiganshire (f. 157), and for several gifts of books.
Three photographs, [?1970s], of Eglwysfach Vicarage (f. 160), and church (ff. 161-162) are also included. There is a reference to Sir Rupert Hart-Davis on f. 158.

Five letters, 1976-7, from the poet R. S. Thomas to Christopher Carrell, Sunderland, mainly relating to a collection of his poems, The way of it (Sunderland: Ceolfrith Press, 1977); together with typescript copies of the eighteen poems concerned, and a proof copy of the volume.
