African-American musical influences

Material relating to the influence of black music and musicians on the music and culture of Britain, and in particular of Swansea, in the earlier part of the 20th century, including lists of jazz bands and orchestras; photocopied photographs of white and blackface 'minstrel' bands; photocopied press cuttings; and printouts from online sources; together with general material relating to black issues, history and influence on white culture, including correspondence between Jen Wilson and Ray Winbush and others and printouts from online sources.

Black History Month

Material relating to Women in Jazz's participation in Black History Month, especially their involvement with Channel 4's Black History Map of Britain website, launched 1 October 2000 for Black History Month, including festival programme; press release; poster and flyer; exhibition texts; printouts and press cuttings; correspondence; and enquiry sheets. Together with material relating to Butetown History & Arts Centre's celebration of Black History Month 1999, 2001 and 2004, and postcards and press cutting relating to Butetown's mixed-race history.

The events marking Black History Month October 2006 coincided with celebrations to mark Women in Jazz's 20th anniversary, which were highlighted by a gala evening featuring Women in Jazz patron Dame Cleo Laine - for which see Women in Jazz 20th Anniversary events.

Fisk Project 2000

Material relating to Jen Wilson's attempt to organise a commemorative celebratory visit to Swansea by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Fisk Jazz Ensemble and the Fisk Race Relations Institute from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, including funding applications for sponsorship and grants; mailing list of potential sponsors/grant providers; projected expenses; copious correspondence, largely between Jen Wilson and potential sponsors/grant providers and between Jen Wilson and representatives of Fisk University; material relating to Fisk University and to the Race Relations Institute; press cuttings and printouts from online sources; and report on the project, which includes the declaration that the planned visit by the Fisk Jubilee Singers was obliged to be cancelled due to lack of funding.
