Studio visitors book

Visitors Book for Angus McBean's studios in Endell Street and Islington, with over one thousand signatures from 1949 to 1968, almost all associated with the entertainment industry, some with added comments and drawings.
Among the signatures are those of actors Laurence Olivier (ff. 5, 43, 59), Vivien Leigh (f. 5), Marlene Dietrich (f. 23), Katharine Hepburn (f. 33 verso) and Richard Burton (f. 38), comedian Spike Milligan (f. 56), playwright Tennessee Williams (f. 28), songwriter Ivor Novello (f. 11) and singers such as Maria Callas (f. 61) and all four Beatles (f. 63 verso). Signatures added in January 1987 are of visitors to Fleming's Hall (f. 78 verso).

Letters to Dedwydd Jones

Some one hundred and thirty letters and cards, 1966-1994 and n.d., to Dedwydd Jones, mostly from actors, playwrights and other prominent theatrical and literary figures in response to receiving copies of his works. Among the correspondents are Alan Ayckbourn (3) 1975-1981, Stanley Baker (4) 1968-1975, Cyril Cusack (2) 1968, Anthony Hopkins (1) 1987, Eugène Ionesco (1) 1974, Glyn Jones (10) 1969-1978, J. Saunders Lewis (1) 1969, Spike Milligan (2) 1977-1978, John Osbourne (3) 1991-1993, Siân Phillips (1) n.d., Kate Roberts (10) 1971-1977, Harry Secombe (1) 1982, and Sam Wanamaker (9) 1990-1993.

Papers and memorabilia documenting the career of Sir Harry Secombe CBE, the entertainer, comedian, singer, star of film, radio, television and theatre, also a writer and broadcaster. This collection was compiled by Harry himself, together with his wife Myra and their children. The papers include scripts from stage, radio and television shows such as "The Goon Show", "Pickwick" (1963 and 1993), "Harry Secombe Show", "Secombe and Friends", "Sunday Night at the London Palladium", etc.. Book manuscripts including "Twice Brightly" (1974), "Goon Abroad" (1982), "Arias and Raspberries" (1989), and "Strawberries and Cheam" (1998). Many anecdotes and speech notes; magazine articles in draft and published; programmes and posters (many signed); letters, personalia, honours, awards ephemera, charity work, funeral and memorial service. Harry was well known for his humorous cartoons and caricatures which feature throughout the collection.
The large collection of personal and publicity photographs, including "Pickwick" productions, "Oliver!", together with stars of theatre, television, friends, and Royalty have been transferred to NLW photographic collections.
Three paintings have been transferred to NLW framed works.
