Carmarthen Presbyterian Academy

A manuscript which belonged to David Davis, Unitarian minister, Neath, son of David Davis, Castell Hywel. It contains copies of correspondence, 1800-1801, relating to the non-admission of Henry Davis, son of Timothy Davis, to the Presbyterian Academy, Carmarthen, the correspondents including John Rowe, Bristol, Henry Davis, David Davis, Neath, Samuel Thomas, Hambrook, Abraham Rees, Hackney, David Davis, Castell Hywel and Richard Evans, Carmarthen; copies of poetry by Edward Richard, Ystradmeurig and 'Dafydd ab Ieuan Rhydderch', i.e. David Davis, Castell Hywel; miscellanea relating to the Unitarians at Gellionnen; notes relating to a comet which appeared in the year 1807; extracts from printed books, including some from the works of Sir William Jones, oriental scholar; copies of letters written by Rees Jenkin Jones and others in 1896 relating to the affairs of the Carmarthen Presbyterian College. Some of the correspondence relating to Henry Davis is printed in Rees Jenkin Jones: The Unitarian Students at the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen ... (Aberdare, 1901).

Letters, 1808-1885, from persons interested in social reforms, politics, and education, including John Bright, Richard Cobden, Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), John Griffiths ('Gohebydd'), Walter D. Jerermy, Morgan Lloyd, Sir Theodore Martin, J. H. Puleston, Henry Richard, G. O. Trevelyan, Rowland Williams ('Hwfa Môn'), Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, and C. W. Williams Wynn, to Samuel Roberts ('S.R.'), with drafts of replies to some of them; from 'S.R.' to his father, his brother John, and others; from John Roberts ('J.R.') to George Roberts and others; from Humphrey Gwalchmai to John Hughes; from A. Rees to J. Holden; from C. W. Williams Wynn to the electors of Montgomeryshire; and a letter of introduction to friends in America given to 'S.R.' by William Henry Channing. There are also pamphlets relating to postal and other reforms.

Letters, 1812-1895, to Richard Williams from politicians, poets, bibliographers, etc. including Edward A. Bond, David Davies (Llandinam), W. E. Gladstone, A. J. Johnes, A. H. Layard, Morgan Lloyd, [Sir] Hugh Owen, Stuart Rendel, Henry Richard, and Samuel Roberts (S.R.); to 'Ceiriog' from John Jones (Talhaiarn); to Edward Hamer from Matthew Arnold; to D. Rowland from John Jenkines ('Ifor Ceri'); to John Jones ('Idris Vychan') from Lewis W. Lewis ('Llew Llwyfo'); to Charles Hanbury Tracey from A. J. 'S.R.' letters to David Howell,

Seventy-six items of correspondence and other papers (letters, postcards, etc.), 1848-1885, almost all from Samuel Roberts, 'S.R.', Conway, to his cousin, David Howell, Machynlleth (Dolguog, Penegoes), and Aberdovey, with one letter to Mrs. Howell and one to the Dolguog family, and one letter, 1884, from [John Roberts] 'J.R.', Conwy, to D[avid] Howell. The subjects touched upon include the Tennessee lands, the death of their Johnstown cousin, Evan Roberts, 1871, autographs, [Crynodeb o] Helyntion Bywyd S.R. (1875) and other works by 'S.R.', his brothers J[ohn] R[oberts] and R[ichard] R[oberts], Y Cronicl, a claim against the U.S. Government in respect of supplies furnished to the army during the war, the library of their late friend the Reverend Edward Hughes, incumbent of Meliden, the assassination of President Garfield, 1881, a visit from the Rt. Hon. John Bright, 1881, Cousin David Lewis, Dr. Abraham Rees, the funeral of [John Roberts, 'J.R.'], 1884, and in particular 'S.R.'s work copying, with David Howell's permission, for publication by the Reverend David Williams ['Apeles'] in Y Gofadail Fethodistaidd, Ail argraffiad (1882) and Ail gyfrol (1884), old sermons taken down in shorthand by David Howell's brother, W[illiam] Howell, Junr., Bont, Llanbrynmair.
