A volume containing poetry mostly in strict metre, together with some prose items and a significant body of prophetic prose or vaticinatory verse, transcribed between 1649 (see pp. 285-288) and 1660 by Wiliam Bodwrda; the volume would appear to have been 'No. 17' in his own collection of manuscripts (see f. iv and p. 342).
The cited works are mainly those of fifteenth-century poets, including eulogies by Lewys Glyn Cothi and prophetic poetry by Dafydd Gorlech, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd o Fathafarn and Robin Ddu. Several pieces of prophecy are either anonymous or attributed to ambiguous and obscure authors such as Taliesin, y Bardd Cwsg and y Bergam. Eulogies composed in praise of the Bodwrda family are found on pages 181-193 and 285-288. Wiliam Bodwrda himself has paginated the manuscript from 1-341, but some of these numbers have been cropped in binding. The paper, according to the transcriber's practice, has been folded before use giving three vertical creases on every page, the left-hand crease being used as a guide for the alignment of the text. The transcriber uses a catchword on the bottom right-hand corner of most verso pages.

A transcript by John Thomas ('Sion Wyn o Eifion') of cywyddau and other poems by Robin Ddu, Rhys Goch Eryri, Iolo Goch, Tudur Aled, Dafydd Gorlech, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Dafydd ap Hwlcyn ap Madog, Rhys Llwyd ap Rhys, Maredudd ap Rhys, Mathew Owen, Edward Morus and Sion Lleyn; the manuscript also contains triads, genealogies, 'Breiniau Gwŷr Arfon', 'Meddygon Myddfai', 'geirlyfr William Lleyn', etc.

An imperfect, composite manuscript consisting of transcripts, in a number of hands of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, of miscellaneous prose and verse items including Welsh poems in strict metre by Edward Dafydd, Dauudd Edward, Davydd William, 'viccar Penllin', Lewis Mfln, Thomas ap Rys 'o blas jolyn', Phillipp Pwell, John Tudur, Dauidd ap Gwilym, Robin Ddv, Gruffydd ap Iefan, John Philipps, Iolo Goch, Thomas Derllysc, Gruffydd Gryg, Siôn Cent, Richard Kynnwal, Huw Machno, Robert Dyfi, and Kadwalader Kesel, two versions of the code of rules for regulating the craft and conduct of the Welsh bardic order generally attributed to Gruffudd ap Cynan, a copy of 'The order of the funerall of John Conway of Botruthan in the Countie of Flint, Esquier, who was intered in Rithlan the 23th of December 1606', a prophesy entitled 'The prophesie of Gre[ ]' (Latin), and a short sequence of Welsh triads. Some of the leaves bear contemporary foliation indicating that they formed sections of other manuscripts. An inscription in the hand of Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg) on the previous upper cover lists the contents of the volume, and, from this list, it appears that a section containing an account of Gruffudd ap Cynan's sojourn in Ireland in 1098 ('Hanes Gruffudd ap Cynan yn y Werddon yn y flwyddyn 1098') has been lost since the time the inscription was written. There are a few marginal annotations by Iolo Morganwg.

'Llyfr Ystrad Alun', containing (a) items in prose, (b) a very large number of 'cywyddau', 'awdlau', 'englynion', and 'carolau' or 'cerddi', and (c) some poems in English. --

Two poems by Dafydd Vaughan, 'Gwir gariad' and ['Camgymeriad'], have stanzas in English and Welsh alternately, the Welsh following the English. -- As so many of the poems in the manuscript are by Dafydd Vaughan he may possibly have been the scribe. The volume has annotations by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') who has designated it 'Llyfr Ystrad Alun' and who transcribed some poems from it - see NLW MS 1658.
