Letters and papers, 1781-1810, of Morgan Thomas, Norfolk Street, the Strand, London, and William Makepeace Thackeray, grandfather of the novelist W. M. Thackeray, executors appointed under the will of Hopkin Walters, surgeon with the East India Company in Bengal, who died at sea in 1781. The documents include references to the seizure of the testator's original will by the authorities in Cadiz and an attempt to recover his effects and part of his fortune in gold and silver from the ship Diana.

Letter books containing general letters (mostly public but some private) from Clive to correspondents in Europe but mainly to officers of the East India Company in India. They derive from his second period of residence in India, 1756-1760, when he returned as a lieutenant-colonel and held the positions of deputy-governor of Fort St David, and governor, for the first time, of Bengal. There are also some letters from Clive's aides and associates. -- The letters relate to military and naval operations in Bengal, the restoration of the East India Company's interests there, the East India Company's financial affairs, the capture and recapture of Calcutta, relations with the French and the capture of their settlement at Chandernagore, the political and military situation prevailing from the aftermath of the capture of Chandernagore to the march on Plassey, including relations with Siraj-ud-daula and Mir Jafar, and the battle of Plassey.

A letter-book, 1791-1792, kept by Harford Jones when he was Point Factor for the East India Company at Scherauz, Bussora (Basra), Baghdad, etc. Among the correspondents to whom he wrote are Samuel Manesty, Charles Watkins, Sir William Jones, Sir Robert Ainslie, bart, William Francklin, and the Secret Committee of the Directors of the Honourable East India Company.

The file comprises letters by Lieut. Thomas Griffith of the 20th Bengal Native Infantry, 1804-1813, to his father, John Wynne Griffith, his mother, Jane, brother, George, grandmother and aunt, written on board Lord Keith and from Calcutta, Cawnpore, Barrackpore, Prince of Wales Island, Malacca, Java and Bengal, describing the voyage, Madras and Calcutta, scenery, animals, naval engagements of the English, French and Dutch, his lieutenancy, April 1805, promotions, 1812-1813, life in the army camps, isolation from family, military and social activities of Marquis Cornwallis (and his death in 1805), Marquis of Wellesley, Col. Ochterlony, Lord Lake, Sir Edward Pellew, the Duke of York, Lord Wellington, Lord Minto, Sir George Nugent, Major Scott Waring, events in Europe and elsewhere, including Nelson's defeat of the French in 1805, military and political activities of the French under Bonaparte in Austria and Prussia, capture of Bourbon by Colonel Keating, 1810, capture of Java in 1811, collection of seeds and plants to send home, Indian life, a hurricane in Madras, 1807, preparations for war against the Sikhs, trade of the East India Company, news from home including the death of his brother, John in 1804, the Wynne family of Garthmeilio and Plasnewydd, 1806-1807, 1812, a marriage of Salusbury and Mostyn with concerns about hereditary maladies, 1810, death of his grandmother, 1811, election of Lord Kirkwall, 1813, acquaintances such as Howell and Henry Clough, William Evans, surgeon, Capt. Miscellaneous papers, notes on historical, philosophical, and medical subjects, in several hands, including that of David Williams; a copy of a declaration clearing David Williams of responsibility for writing an anonymous letter, 1769; a draft statement on the policy of admitting colonies to a full participation in the rights of the mother country; notes of proceedings on the motion of an address to the King from the inhabitants of Monmouthshire, 1795; a draft letter to Thomas Pelham, Earl of Chichester; incomplete drafts of statements on the East India Company and on the copper trade, including testimony by John Vivian and Thomas Williams; a statement by Richard Ellis, Llanbeblig, miller, concerning votes for Sir Robert Williams at a Caernarvonshire election; and a memorandum of agreement for letting rooms at Lower Sloane Street to Mary Watkins, 1822.

'Narrative', 1809-1810, 'of Mr A. W. Wainhouse Private Trader Residing at Taffenooly when the [East India Company's] Settlement Surrendered to His I. & R. Majesty's Corvette Le Creole, commanded by Mr Ripand Lieutenant de Vaisseau, on the 12th October 1809'. -- A. W. Wainhouse had some associations with Tremadoc, Caernarvonshire.
