Remarks by A. W. Williams Wynn, 1935, on a dissertation on 'Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, 1775-1850' submitted in 1934 by Gwyneth Evans, Holyhead, in candidature for the degree of Master of Arts of the University of Wales.

The letters, 1910-1919, discuss the establishment and organisation of the Welsh National Memorial Association, set up in 1911, the National Health Insurance Commission Wales, the preparation and publication of The Welsh Outlook, the WEA, the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth (where a number of developments and appointments are discussed in some detail), the University of Wales, and the financial support of the Davies family of Llandinam for many initiatives in Wales.

The series comprises letters, 1880-1920, addressed to O. M. Edwards, from his first arrival at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, until the time of his death. Many of the letters are from prominent Welsh public figures. The early letters relate to Edwards's career as a student at the UCW, Aberystwyth, the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. Some concern his preaching engagements, his plans and ambitions, while others give local news from the Llanuwchllyn area. Following his appointment as Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1889, many of the letters concern his academic work and university responsibilities, and there are numerous requests for references and testimonials from students and former students. Some correspondents write in relation to educational matters in Wales, notably the passage and operation of the Welsh Intermediate Education Act, 1889, and the affairs of the University of Wales. -- From the 1890s onwards many letters concern O. M. Edwards's editing of Cymru and Cymru'r Plant, and later Wales, Heddyw and Y Llenor. Intermingled with these letters are some which refer to personal events in Edwards's life: his marriage in 1891, the death of his father in 1895, and the death of the eldest son Owen ab Owen in 1897. In 1899 many letters concern the death of Thomas Edward Ellis MP, the selection of Edwards as his successor as Liberal MP for Merionethshire, and his brief sojourn in the House of Commons until July 1900. -- Throughout these years the letters abound with references to educational matters, notably within the Universities of Wales and Oxford. Others relate to Welsh literary and cultural matters, the publication of Cyfres y Fil and the organization of Urdd y Delyn. A few letters concern Edwards's researches, writings and academic publications. -- From 1907 onwards many of the letters relate to O. M. Edwards's duties as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales. Throughout the remaining years there are numerous communications from Edwards's former students at Oxford, invitations to deliver lectures and attend various functions and events, and letters relating to the editing of journals, notably Cymru and Cymru'r Plant. Others concern literary, cultural and publishing matters, and many relate to educational themes. These are interspersed with congratulatory messages on receipt of the Medal of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion in 1915 and a knighthood in January 1916. Many of the letters from the final years refer to O. M. Edwards's personal, health and family problems.

Miscellaneous cards and tickets, 1889-1924 and undated, collected by J. H. Davies. They include calling cards, readers' tickets, invitations and admission cards, menus and toasts, and annual membership cards. They relate to events at, among other institutions, the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, the University of Wales, the Guild of Graduates of the University of Wales, the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, the National Library of Wales, the National Eisteddfod and the Welsh Bibliographical Society.

The file comprises letters in which Sir John Morris-Jones discusses his career and activities, the contents of Welsh journals and literary matters (notably the contents of the journals edited by O. M. Edwards), his research work and publications. There are also numerous references to the University of Wales and to higher education and to academic matters more generally.

The series contains letters with a mixture of personal and professional news. Many of the letters refer to matters relating to the University of Wales and the individual colleges: academic matters, research, appointments and buildings. There are also numerous references to developments in secondary education in Wales and to relations between the schools and the university. Some of the letters arrange meetings with O. M. Edwards. There are a few references to contemporary political life.

Reports relating to music education in Caernarfonshire, minutes of the Sub-Committee of the county council; feedback from headmasters to a memorandum on music for schools; documents relating to music in schools throughout Wales in general; and related correspondence. J. Lloyd Williams is the author of a number of these reports and the file also includes a critical report by him on the role of Welsh music in the music departments of the University of Wales.

Papers, correspondence and printed items, 1872-1926, relating to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. They include copies of the college's early registers, 1872-1877, copies of the conveyance of the college and its hereditaments, 1875, copies of the deed of settlement of the college, and of the charter of incorporation and statutes, both dated 1892, papers concerning the administration of the college's restoration fund, the revised constitution of the college, and the old students' scholarship fund. Other matters include the charter of the federal University of Wales in 1893, the college's building fund, Alexandra Hall, the finance and general purposes committee, the estate of Sir John Williams, the proposed revision of the college's charter and statutes, and museum grants for Wales. The correspondents include Thomas Charles Edwards (3), 1885-1886, Lewis Morris, 1886, and Stuart Rendel, 1889.

Includes correspondence and papers relating to the political dispute between Clement Davies and Lord Davies in 1938-39, and Lord Davies's attitudes towards national politics. There are several references to the 1943 by-election in the University of Wales parliamentary division. Includes letters from the Rev. The letters, 1895-1926, relate mainly to Sir Daniel's researches and writings. There are also several references to the University of Wales, the University College of South Wales, Cardiff, and the National Library of Wales.

The letters, 1897-1924, discuss the work of the Guild of Graduates of the University of Wales, especially its Literature Section, the publication of Gweithiau Morgan Llwyd o Wynedd, and the work of re-printing the Welsh classics by the Guild. There are also references to the internal politics of the University of Wales and the colleges at Aberystwyth and Bangor and to other appointments in which Sir John Edward Lloyd had an interest.

The letters, 1895-1925, discuss Welsh political life, the attempts to regenerate Mudiad Cymru Fydd, historical records relating to Flintshire, the foundation of the National Library of Wales, its location at Aberystwyth, and appeals for increased government funding and the passage of the copyright legislation, developments at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the federal University of Wales, the possibility of establishing a Public Record Office for Wales, and the selection of Liberal candidates in Welsh constituencies for the 'Coupon' General Election of December 1918.

The letters, 1900-1926, refer mainly to their author's research work, editorial work and publications, including his reviews. There are also occasional references to his college and lecturing work at Bangor and to various social visits and events. There are occasional references to the administration of the college and the University of Wales, and to various university appointments.

Most of the letters, 1897-1925, are relatively short notes, arranging meetings, giving items of news and requesting pieces of information for the author's researches. There are many references to Welsh books and manuscripts, and occasional, passing references to contemporary national and political events. There is also some discussion of the development of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, the University of Wales, and the establishment and early growth of the National Library of Wales. There are several interesting references to the selection of the venue for the National Library and the eventual choice of Aberystwyth and to the appointment of the Library's officers. Sir John also occasionally refers to the early history of the National Museum, founded at Cardiff in the early twentieth century. During 1908 and 1909 there are letters referring to meetings with D. Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, and John Herbert Lewis, relating to attempts to wrest improved funding for the National Library from the Liberal government.

The file consists of typescript copies of correspondence, 1899-1938. They include letters, 1899-1919, from Sir Henry Jones, Glasgow, to Sir Harry Reichel, discussing educational matters in Wales, notably the affairs of the University of Wales, adult education, and the Workers' Educational Association. They also include correspondence, 1937-1938, between Dr Thomas Jones and Abraham Flexner, discussing events in the United States and political life in Britain.

The file consists of miscellaneous items accumulated by Lady White relating to the affairs of the University of Wales, mainly the proceedings of the Court and Council of the University, and events at the University of Wales Cardiff.

The file comprises five letters to David Jones from T. J. Morgan and others at the University of Wales relating to his honorary degree ceremony, with a typescript copy of his acceptance speech in absentia, 1960, and also draft letters from David Jones relating to the Aberystwyth degree ceremony and to an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews.
