A volume of transcripts of Welsh poetry. The first fifty-one folios contain copies, in a 16th-century hand, of 'cywyddau' by Siôn Cent, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Madog Benfras, Gruffudd Gryg, Dafyddd ab Edmwnd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Tudur Aled, Dafydd Nanmor and others. The remainder of the volume (ff. 52-147) is in several hands of the end of the 17th century. At the head of f. 52 is the following note:- 'Haec sequens Collectio facta fuit Opera P.V.A.M. ...', the initials probably representing the name of Peter Vaughan, M.A., who was vicar of Llangernyw from 1682 to 1689. This part of the manuscript contains the names and arms of the fifteen tribes of Gwynedd; pedigrees of some Abergele families (among them that of Peter Vaughan himself) taken from the books of Sion Tudur and Rhys Cain; an account of the five residences of Sir Roger Mostyn in 1682; poetry in strict and free metres by Sion Tudur, Morus Dwyfech, Richard Phylip, Gryffydd Phylip, Guto'r Glyn, Maredudd ap Rhys, Edmwnd Prys, Lewis Glyn Cothi and others; etc.

An incomplete volume (ff. 1-85, 176-243) consisting largely of 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Sion Kent, Sion Tudvr, Grvffydd Grvg, Meredith ap Rees, Will'm ap Sion ap D'd, Gruff' Hiraethog, Will'm Llynn, Huw Arwistl, D'd ap Edmwnd, D'd ap Gwilim, Rob't Leiaf, Rys Goch or Yri, Mastr Hari, Ifan Tew Brydydd, Gytto Glyn, Sion Philipp, Roger Kyffyn, Ievan Fychan, Sr. Davydd Trevor, Tudur Penllyn, Rowland Fychan, Tomas Prys, Evan Tudvr Owen, Ievan Brydydd Hir, William Elias, Tudur Aled, Gruff' ap Ievan, Rys Pennarth, Bedo Aerdrem, Bedo Brwynllys, Iolo Goch, Ellis Rowland, Howel ap D'd ap Ievan ap Rys, D'd Namor, D'd Ddv o Hiraddvc, Lewys Glyn Kothi, Howel ap Ievan ap Rys, Owen Gruffydd, Michael Prichard, Edmwnd Price, Hughe ap Ed'd Lloyd, Rice Kain, Richard Hughes, [Richard Davies] 'Escob Dewi', Ed'd Maelor, Ievan ap Tudvr Penllyn, Harrie Howell, Sion Kain, and Robin Ddv. Towards the end of the volume there are short texts such as 'englynion' in Latin, 'llyma gas bethav Owain Kyveiliog', 'xxiiij gwell', 'Geirie gwir Taliesin', triads, proverbs, the nine grades of kinship, medical recipes, 'Llyma henwau y pedair Caingc ar ddeg Cydwgan a Cyhelyn', and 'Henwau'r pedwar Gosdeg Cerdd dannau'. The greater part of the manuscript was written in the seventeenth century; but there are additions and marginal notes to the nineteenth century. There is an index ('Tabl y llyfr') to ff. 1--76, in a seventeenth century hand. Between ff. 4 and 6 are inserted two leaves (pp. 129-30, 135-6) of David Jones (Trefriw) (ed.): Cydymaith Diddan (Caer Lleon [1766]).

Transcripts from manuscript sources, with copious variant readings, of 'cywyddau' by Ifan ap Gruffudd leiaf, Tudur Penllyn, Gruffydd Hiraethog, [Lewis Glyn Cothi], Guttor Glyn, Tvdvr Pennllynn, Thomas Kelli, Ho'll Rinallt, Howel Kilan, Dafydd Llwyd Lle'n ap Gruffudd, Robin Ddu ap Siankyn Bledrydd, Hugh Roberts Llên, Ll'n ap Guttyn, Rhys Cain, etc. At the beginning is a list of contents. Also included in the volume are a few extracts from the tale of Owein a Lunet, and notes on 'The Mediaeval Church & Monasticism'.

A volume containing transcripts of Welsh verse in strict metre (consisting mainly of 'cywyddau') transcribed, October [18]89 - February [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes] [newspaper proprietor and publisher]. Many of the poems are annotated to indicate that they were copied out of a volume in the possession of 'W.J.' of Llangollen, and the whole work appears to be an incomplete transcript of NLW MS 670D, which itself consists of a collection of Welsh poems transcribed by William Jones ('Bleddyn'), antiquary, local historian, etc., of Llangollen. The poets whose work is represented include Gwerfil Mechain, Howel Dafi alias Hywel ap Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Rys (Bardd Raglan), Sion ap Phelppot, Robert ap Dafydd Llwyd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (o Fathafarn), John ap Howel ap Tudur, Huw Cae Llwyd, Lewys Daron, Bedo Brwynllys, ? A note on p. 123 indicates that three 'englynion' by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', which were to be found at this point in W[illiam] J[ones]'s volume [NLW MS 670D], had not been copied by the transcriber, as he intended including them in a proposed new edition of that poet's works, to be published by him in 1889. A second note on the same page indicates that, similarly, fourteen 'cywyddau' by Tudur Aled had not been transcribed in the present volume, but had been copied into another book, with the intention of publishing these and other poems by the same bard, together with poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur. In fact, fourteen 'cywyddau' and four other poems by Tudur Aled, and all of the poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur, which appear in NLW MS 670D, have been omitted from the present volume, the presence of poems by the two latter bards in NLW MS 670D being usually indicated by the transcriber by quoting the title, or title and first line, of such works. A note on p. 153 states that eighty ' cywyddau' by Dafydd ap Gwilym [which appeared in William Jones's book, i.e ., NLW MS 670D, pp. 149-263], had been used to correct the published edition of that poet's work ('Yma daw LXXX Cywydd o waith Dafydd ab Gwilym, y rhai a ddefnyddiwyd i gywiro ei waith argraffedig'). These eighty poems, and also five retaliatory poems composed by Gruffydd Grug, in a poetic contention with Dafydd ap Gwilym, and found interspersed among the eighty 'cywyddau', have been omitted from the present volume. A further note on p. 264 states that the last three 'cywyddau' [in NLW MS 670D] had not been copied, as the transcriber believed the text to be so corrupt, that they did not merit transcription. A fly-leaf is marked 'Bk i', and this possibly connects the volume with NLW MS 19313, which, marked on a fly-leaf 'Bk ii', consists of a similar volume of Welsh verse transcribed, March - April [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes], again, by inference, from a book in the possession of W[illiam] J[ones].

An imperfect, composite volume (pp. 33-86, two imperfect, unnumbered leaves, pp. 93-146, with p. 72 blank) containing transcripts of Welsh strict-metre verse, mostly in the form of 'cywyddau', by Tudur Aled, William Phylip, Siôn Phylip, Siôn Dafydd Siencin, David ap Gwilim, Owen Gwynedd, William Lleyn, Evan Tew (1590), Ellis Rowland, Tomas Prys ('o Blas Iolyn'), Dafydd ddu ('o hiraddig'), Morys Thomas Howel, Siôn Tudur ('Swyddog Yn perthun i Esgobeth Llan Elwau'), Roger Cyffin, Gwerfil Mechain, Evan ap R. ap Llewellyn, Gutto'r Glyn, Gruffydd Owen, Edward Vrien, Edward ap Rhus, Rhys Cain, Ierwerth Fynglwyd, Rhees ap Ednyfed, Rhydderch ab Evan Llwyd ('Meisdr o ddysg'), Doctor John Cent, Sir David Trefor, Dafydd Evan ab Owen, Dafydd Nanmor, and Gryffydd Gryg. The greater part of the volume was probably transcribed by the Evan William whose name, in his own hand, appears on pp. 62, 83 (1775), and 121. 'Evan Williams, Gardener', referred to in the margin of p. 63 as the owner of the volume in 1779, is possibly the same person.

A seventeenth century manuscript consisting of eighty-three folios containing transcripts of Welsh strict-metre verse, being almost entirely 'cywyddau' and 'englynion'. The poems were transcribed by Thomas ab Ieuan, the copyist of NLW MSS 13061-13062B, 13669B,13085B, in 1684 (see note in the scribe's own hand on f. 80 verso - 'Llyma lyfr kywyddav Thomas Ievan o Dre'r brynn ag ef i hvnan ai ysgryvennoedd ef pan oedd oedran yn harglwydd ni iesu grist 1684'; see also TLLM, tt. 170-71). Included are 'englynion' by Robin Ddu, Huw Pennant, Rhys Nanmor and others, and possibly the transcriber himself (see TLLM, tt. 170-71); 'cywyddau' by Robin Ddu (7), Rhys Nanmor, Huw Pennant, Dafydd Gorlech (2), Iolo Goch (3), Dafydd Nannmor (2), Siôn Mawddwy, Bedo Brwynllys, Guto'r Glyn (3) and others; and an 'awdl' ('odl vraith') by Rhys Nanmor. There are marginal notes in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg').

An imperfect volume, the contents consisting of transcripts, in a hand possibly of the first half of the seventeenth century, of Welsh poems being mainly strict-metre poems in the form of 'cywyddau'. These are numbered and, if the manuscript when complete contained the whole sequence, the folios at the beginning containing poems 1-18 and most of poem 19 are now wanting. Many mid-volume and possibly some end folios are also missing. A composite volume containing miscellaneous material in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') including pp. 9-34, a short treatise on the Welsh bardic order, its organisation, ceremonies, etc., with the superscription 'Llyma Lafar Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain . . sef ydyw hynny son Defodawl am Freiniau a Defodau Beirdd Ynys Prydain fal y bu gynt yn Amser y Prifeirdd a Thywysogion y Cymry . . .', being allegedly a transcript of material extracted by the Glamorgan scribe Llywelyn Siôn of Llangewydd from a manuscript in Raglan Castle (for the Welsh text see Iolo Manuscripts . . ., pp. 49-62, and for an English translation ibid., pp. 430-48); 39-42, notes with the superscription 'Llyma Lyfr y Barddas sef Derwyddoniaeth Beirdd Ynys Prydain . . . ac ynghyntaf y mae Traethawd hawl ag atteb Bardd ac awenydd o waith Siôn y Cent. . .', being apparently a transcript of the first section of an essay or treatise on aspects of Welsh bardism allegedly compiled by the aforementioned Llywelyn Siôn from sources at Raglan ('llyfrau . . . yng gellawl rhaglan') (for text and trans., see John Williams: Barddas . . ., vol. Miscellaneous papers in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. The contents include pp. 11- 36, a draft version of the essay 'A short review of the present state of Welsh MSS.' which appeared as a preface to The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., vol. Interspersed amongst the above items are miscellaneous Welsh verse, lists or groups of Welsh words often with English definitions or explanatory notes, grammatical or etymological notes, etc. In one instance notes have been written on the blank sides of an incomplete copy of Herbert Croft's printed proposals, 1792, for publishing an English dictionary based upon that of Samuel Johnson, and in another on the blank verso of a broadsheet containing a copy of a Latin inscription found in the parish of Gelligaer, co. Glamorgan, with a Welsh translation thereof.

In a note on the aforementioned 'title-page' (p. 199) Edward Williams claims to have transcribed this collection in 1799 from a manuscript in the possession of Siams Thomas of Maerdy Newydd, co. Glamorgan. Preceding and following the actual text of the collection are transcripts of a prefatory letter dated 1685 (pp. 201-06) and of the concluding note already referred to (p. 390) both of which are attributed to the Glamorgan scribe and copyist Thomas ab Iefan of Tre Bryn as compiler of the manuscript from which Edward Williams was allegedly copying (see TLLM, t. 172; IM, tt. 291-4). Pp. 391-477 contain a transcript of a collection, in alphabetical order, of over three thousand Welsh proverbs attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth ('Llyma Ddiarhebion Cattwg Ddoeth . . . sef yw hwnn Ail Lyfr y Gwyddfardd Cyvarwydd'). This collection, according to the aforementioned note at the end of the preceding section (p. 390) attributed to Thomas ab Iefan, had been compiled by the said Thomas from various sources and formed a continuation of the previous section. Edward Williams's claim with regard to the Siams Thomas volume is probably intended to apply to the contents of pp. 391-477 as well. A composite volume of collections of Welsh poetry and prose made about 1635. The title is derived from the third section which contains a number of poems to members of the Wynn family of Moelyrch in Llansilin. Amongst the poets represented are Hywel Cilan, Tudur Aled, Rhys Cain, Gruffudd Hiraethog, Sion Cain, Guto'r Glyn, Edmwnd Prys, Lewis Glyn Cothi, Iolo Goch, Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Taliesin, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Dafydd Nanmor and Wiliam Cynwal. Miscellaneous material in the volume includes a copy of an award relating to Moelyrch, 1540; a fragment of a letter by Charles I; the pedigrees of Oliver Cromwell, Holland and Morris, and Kyffin of Bodfach; a roll of the Caerwys Eisteddfod, 1567; an extract from 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy'; a list of the sheriffs of Denbighshire from 1541 to 1635, with additions to 1658; a copy of documents relating to the treaty of alliance concluded between Charles VI of France and Owain Glyndŵr; extracts from the epigrams of John Owen; and extracts from scripture.
