Wilhelmi Schickardi Horologium Ebraeum ... editio ultima ... (Apud Johannem à Sambix: Ultrajecti 1661), with the mark of ownership and textual additions in the hand of 'Richard Robert Jones [('Dic Aberdaron')] of the Parish of Aberdaron Lleyn Caernarvonshire North Wales'. On the same page is written the name of John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala, 1871, who has added the following annotations: 'Dic Aberdaron a ysgrifenodd yr uchod a'i law ei hun. Byddai weithiau yn defnyddio s ar ddiwedd yr enw canol, ac yn ei sillebu yn 'Roberts'. Gwelais ef yn cam sillebu Cymraeg a Seisonaeg fel hyn - 'Richard Roberts Jones ydi gwir berchenog y llyfr hwn', 'R.R.J. is the rite owner of this book. J. P. Gor. 29. 1871'.

Attodiad i 'Lyfryddiaeth y Cymry' ...,

An exercise book in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Attodiad i 'Lyfryddiaeth y Cymry', Gan Olygydd y gwaith hwnw', being a supplement to William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') (ed. D. Silvan Evans): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869). Among the insets are letters to D. Silvan Evans from E. R. G. Salisbury, Glan-Aber, Chester, 1870-1 (2), and the Reverend D. R. Thomas, St Mary's, Cefn, St Asaph, undated, a bibliographical note in the hand of J. Peter ['Ioan Pedr'], Bala, and copious printed cuttings of book titles.

Darlith ar "Ddaeareg",

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters, Bala, 1865' [i.e. 'Ioan Pedr'] containing a lecture in Welsh on geology ('Darlith ar "Ddaeareg') (incomplete).

Diary of John Peters ('Ioan Pedr'),

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters, Rhagfyr 20fed. 1856' (i.e. 'Ioan Pedr' (1833-77)) containing diary entries, 20 December 1856 - 13 February 1857 (observations on weather conditions, reading, etc.), translations from Latin authors, and notes on chemistry. At the reverse end are lists of members [? of the Independent church] at Bala, 1870 and possibly earlier.

Drama Rhisiart yr Ail Brenin Lloegr,

A notebook containing the beginning of a Welsh translation of Shakespeare's 'King Richard II' ('Drama Rhisiart yr Ail Brenin Lloegr') probably by and in the autograph of John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'; 1833-77). Only part of Act 1, Scene 1, has been translated.

Geirfynag i Weithiau William Salesbury,

'Geirfynag i Weithiau William Salesbury', being a holograph index by John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to the herbal 'Llysieulyfr Meddyginiaethol' contained in NLW MS 686. The index is dated 5 April 1873 and appears to be a fair copy of the one, also in John Peter's hand, contained in NLW MS 2606. The title-page suggests that the scribe had intended also to re-copy the index to William Salesbury and Henry Perry: Egluryn Phraethineb... (London, 1595) which is contained in NLW MS 2606, but this work has not been included.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Nine letters, 1871-6, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'; 1833-77), Bala (articles by 'Ioan Pedr' in Y Traethodydd [1872-3], offering to copy vocabularies in the British Museum, Mr Mackensie of Glasgow proposes to call on the addressee); and six letters, one incomplete, [18]73-84, to D. Silvan Evans from [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys' (1807-89), Bangor and Holyhead (an invitation to adjudicate at the Bangor Eisteddfod, family matters, the fate of two sacks of old letters addressed to the writer).

Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry,

Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. Silvan Evans from W[illia]m Price, Llanffwyst, Abergavenny, 1869 (an addition to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry), [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys', Bangor, [18]78 (the title of Llyfer Plygain, 1618, transcribed by the writer from a volume examined at the Pengwern [Mostyn] sale in 1874), W[illiam] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), Machynlleth, 1862-4 (4) (additions and corrections to [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymru], with references to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), to [Jane] Davies, Penmaen, to W. F. Skene, etc., a request by a local printer to be allowed to print the recipient's edition of the works of [Walter Davies] Gwallter Mechain', the writer's removal from the manse to another house in Machynlleth and subsequently to Oswestry, the reported cataloguing of 'Llyfrfa Coleg Dewi' [the library of St. David's College, Lampeter], the illness and voyage to Australia of the writer's son), and from W[illiam] Spurrell, Carmarthen to [William] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') at Brynmawr, 1851-2 (2) (the writer's copy of Sion Dafydd Rhys's Welsh Grammar, biography of John Daniel, printer of Carmarthen). Some of the unbound titles are in the hand of Richard Williams (1835-1906), Celynog, Newtown and there is some later and additional material in the hand of J. H. Davies.

Poetry, etc.

A notebook with clasp used as a commonplace-book by John Peter ('Ioan Pedr') c. 1851-56. The contents include 'englynion' headed 'Cyngor Goronwy Owain i Ellis y Cowper', verses entitled 'L'antienne Nationale' with a Welsh translation, the Lord's Prayer written in several languages, items of verse by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', [Walter Davies] 'Gwallter Mechain', [Elis Roberts] Ellis Cowper [sic], [Owen Griffith] Y. Meirion, Huw Morys, Glyn Ceiriog and R. Davis, Nantglyn 'y teiliwr', etc., 'Traddiad [sic] o hanes Gwr Caer-Gai Llanuwchlyn', translations into Welsh of extracts from Rousseau, Le Sage, Pascal, Descartes, etc., observations entitled 'Taith "o'm hamgylch fy hunan", vocabularies and grammatical notes.

Scrapbook,

A scrap-book inferentially compiled by John Lloyd Jones ('Clwydwenfro'; 1835-1919) containing press cuttings and a few manuscript items. Some of the cuttings are dated within the 1850s-1870s and among the more interesting titles are 'Hynodion Cwm Rhondda .... Testyn Cystadleuol Eisteddfod y Porth, Nadolig, 1861'; 'Collegiate and University Education in Wales'; 'Llythyr oddiwrth y Parch. Morris Phillips, Cenhadwr i India'; 'Teyrnged i Goffadwriaeth Ioan Pedr'; 'Beirniadaeth ar Gyfansoddiadau Barddonol Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Aberdar, Awst 1861'; 'Llangollen Great National Eisteddfod' [1858]; 'Y Ffrwydriad yn Abercarn'; 'Sketches of Cardiff Preachers'; etc. The manuscript material comprises a tale entitled 'The Bride of Santa Croce', 19 November 1856, described in an annotation by J. Ll. James as 'the composition of the late John Griffith Davies (son of the Rev. J. Davies ['Siôn Gymro'], Glandwr, Pembrokeshire) who wrote it and sent it to John Lloyd James, then a student at Carmarthen College, that he might fill up the outline', and verses entitled 'Y Messiah', etc. addressed to John Ll. James, Berllandawel, Llanglwydwen and annotated in the latter's hand 'J. G. Davies, Yetwen, pan yn Narberth', etc. The outer upper cover is inscribed, in the hand of J. H. Davies, 'Articles and poetry from Cyfaill y Werin and other papers'.

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala, 1861' containing outlines of sermons, 1862-5, some fuller than others. In some cases only the subject and the text are given.

Tipyn o Bobpeth,

A volume lettered on the spine 'Tipyn o Bobpeth', being a scrap-book of press cuttings compiled c. 1900-02 by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). On two occasions only has the compiler recorded his sources, i. e. Y Cerddor and Y Drych, but inferentially there are many cuttings from the latter.
