A volume containing seventy-four holograph letters, 1779-1833, one or two undated, on guards, seventy of which were written by the Rev. Thomas Jones (1752-1845), Trippleton (Leintwardine), Herefordshire, Longnor and Loppington, Salop and Creaton, Northamptonshire, sixty-eight to the Rev. Thomas Richards (1754-1837), Llangynfelyn, [Cardiganshire], Llanymowddwy, [Merionethshire] and Darowen, Montgomeryshire, one, 1784, to the Rev. Mr D. Williams, Ystradmeirig [sic] and one, 1789, to Mr Lewis Jones at Ynis-greigiog near Eglwys-Fach, Card[iganshire]. The subjects discussed and persons mentioned in the letters to Thomas Richards include spiritual matters, the addressee's circumstances, Mr [Daniel] Rowlands, the writer's efforts to secure preferment and assistance for the addressee, Mr Charles of Bala, the writer's own situation, his publications, clerical meetings, his work at Creaton, the Rev. Maurice Evans. Of the remaining four letters two are addressed to the Rev. Thomas Richards and are from E. Jones, Llanwryn, 1784 [? brother of the Rev. Thomas Jones] and from another person named Tho[ma]s Jones, Balls Pond, 1805. The other two letters are from Thomas Richards to the Rev. T. Jones, Creaton, 1799 (draft) and 1802, and relate to the writer's family and circumstances, the burial of one of his neighbours ('poor Morgans'), etc.

Forty-four holograph letters, 1842-1855 and undated, from [the Reverend] Edw[ ar]d Morgan [vicar of Syston, 1814-1869, and of Ratcliffe on the Wreak, 1818- 1867, both in co. Leicester], from Aberffraw (I), Bangor (I), Cheltenham (I), Pyle [co. Glamorgan] (I), and Syston. The names of the addressees are not ascertainable but the contents of the letters indicate that the majority were written to one person, possibly Thomas Jones of Chester, the recipient of the letters in NLW MS 12757C. Several of the letters contain advice to recipient with regard to preparatory studies, initial steps to be taken, etc., in connection with a desire he had expressed of offering himself as a candidate for Holy Orders. The college at St. Bees, the school at Cowbridge, the Mechanics' Institute, Liverpool, and St. David's College, Lampeter, are mentioned in this context. There are also numerous references to the biographies or selections of the letters of the Calvinistic Methodist clerics or ministers [Thomas] Charles, [John] Elias, Howell Harris, [David] Jones, Llangan, [Daniel] Rowland, and W[illia]m Williams, Pantycelyn, which the writer was preparing for publication or had already published. The letters also refer to correspondence of [the Reverend] Jo[hn] Humphreys [C.M. minister] in the writer's possession, the need to tell Mr. H. Griffith to proceed with a Welsh memoir of [John] Elias, the death of recipient's father, the possibility of recipient writing a memoir of his father and of the aforementioned [John] Humphreys, the writer's willingness to help recipient with his 'intended Periodical', Thomas Parry's account [Cofiant] of [the Reverend John] Davies [C.M. minister] of Nantglyn, contacting the Reverend E. Evans [? Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd')], 'Jones the poet at Mold' [? the Reverend Thomas Jones ('Glan Alun')], and the Reverend W[illiam] Rees ['Gwilym Hiraethog'], with regard to William Williams, Pantycelyn, an attack on the writer's edition of the letters of [John] Elias ? by [William Williams] 'Caledfrin' (sic) in the Carnarvon Herald, a seminary for young ladies kept in Chester by Mrs. Williams 'wife of a preacher there', a subscription due from Chancellor [Henry] Raikes of Chester [Cathedral] for a copy of the biography of Howel Harris, and an article on the Reverend S[imon] Lloyd [ Methodist cleric] which the writer was preparing.

Five holograph letters from Daniel Jones from Flint and Wrexham, to Mrs. Jones, 1841 (personal, religious reflections, the writer and [John Phillips] 'Tegidon' had read and copied 'Ychydig hanes y Parch. T. Jones ' [? the Reverend Thomas Jones of Denbigh], 'Tegidon' would like to see the works of Charles [the Reverend Thomas Charles of Bala] and ' Jones o Ddinbych' [the aforementioned Reverend Thomas Jones] republished in parts to appear every two months), his wife and family, 1842-1844 (2) ( personal), and [Mr. Parry], 1845 (2) (personal, arranging preaching engagements for recipient, religious sentiments).

Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. Hoare, 1742 (the original letter is preserved in NLW MS 478), and a copy of Evan Evans's elegy to Lewis Morris, with notes on the text. File 4: Transcripts of letters from Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, c. 1759-1766, to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd'). There are also copies of two short letters to Evan Evans from Roderick Lewis, Trefeglwys, and William Howell, Llanidloes, which were written on the same sheet as Edward Richard's letter of 1 March 1766. The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'). A folding case formerly housing a letter, 29 May 1813, from the Rev. Thomas Charles, Bala, to Joseph T. Price, Neath Abbey (now NLW MS 24045F, f. 38). Affixed to the case is a paper label attesting to the loan of the letter to the Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition held during the Church Congress at Swansea in October 1909.

A diary, 1801-1802, containing an account of sermons heard by Robert Saunderson of Chester (later printer of Bala), at Boughton, Queen Street Chapel, and Handbridge, Chester, on Sundays, 4 January 1801-7 February 1802. Numerous references are made to the Sunday schools at Boughton, the Rossett, Dunham and Ince, and to the preaching of the Rev. Thomas Charles of Bala.

Typewritten copies of sixteen letters from [the Reverend] Tho[ma]s Charles from Bala, Machynlleth, Milbourne Port, Oxford, Spa Fields Chapel [London], and Turk dean, near Northleach, including (a) nine letters to the Reverend Edward Griffin at Little Horwood, near Winslow, and Worcester, 1776-1788 and undated, and (b) seven letters, 1804-1812 and undated, one of which is addressed to S. Ralph, and all of which, according to D. E. Jenkins: The Life of the Rev. Thomas Charles . . ., in which they have been published (see index, s.n. Ralph, Simon), were written to Simon Ralph of Seaton (Saighton, Seighton), near Chester. The seven letters of this second section deal mainly with matters relating to the church [established by the Reverend Phillip Oliver] at Boughton.

(Bala, 1821); and an incomplete glossary in the hand of Morris Davies of words (Abba - Pen-bleth) extracted apparently from Thomas Charles, Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol (Bala, 1805). At the end of the volume are pencil drawings, partly coloured, of persons representing M[argaret] A[nn] Parry, M. A. Jones etc.

Three holograph love letters, 1780, from Sally [Sarah] Jones, Bala, to her future husband the Reverend [Thomas] Charles [later of Bala] at Queen Camel, near Sherborne, co. Dorset, and at Milbourne Port, co. Somerset; and five holograph letters from Diana Noel, Lady Barham, Fairy Hill [Gower], to the Reverend D[avid] Charles, Carmarthen, 1816-1820 (the opening of one of the writer's chapels, the writer's health, condolence with the recipient, invitations to Fairy Hill and to the quarterly meeting at Penclawdd, personal).

Journal of the Rev. Thomas Prior, 25 August-29 October 1802, mostly describing an excursion to North Wales with his wife A[licia] M[arie] Prior, 27 August-12 October, during which the couple took lodgings at Caernarfon (ff. 1-19 verso).
The Priors sailed from Dublin to Holyhead on 25 August (f. 1), visited Bangor (ff. 1-3 verso), then stayed at Caernarfon, 2 September-12 October, with a number of brief excursions within Caernarvonshire (ff. 3 verso-19 verso). The couple returned to Dublin on 12 October (f. 19 verso) and the latter portion of the journal concerns the resumption of Prior's daily life, 13-29 October (ff. 20-22). The volume includes an anecdote on the painter Robert Bowyer recounted to Prior by Bowyer's brother-in-law (f. 1) and an eyewitness account of the Rev. Thomas Charles preaching, 1 October (f. 15).
