A composite collection of Welsh poetry and prose entitled 'Crwth a Thelyn. Y Rhan Gyntaf, sef y Crwth. Yr hwn Grwth a Aing ynddaw Swrn o Orchestawl Waith y Cynfeirdd, ac Ychydig o Farddoniaeth yr oes hon'. The collection was compiled by Hugh Jones, Esqr., of Talyllyn, and was begun by him about 1730. A composite volume comprising two notebooks originally used by the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837) for personal and family memoranda and accounts (mainly 1821-37) of debts, wages paid to female servants, tithes, provisions, payments of interest and repayments of debts. It also includes accounts, 1816-24, between H. L. Eddes Gwynne and the Reverend Thomas Richards relating to Hirnant rents. The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen to record transcripts of letters, mainly between various members of the Richards family but including also letters from R. A volume containing forty-five holograph letters, 1820-30, mostly dated, on guards, with a few drafts and miscellaneous papers, from Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'; 1795-1855), writing at various times from Trefriw, Croesoswallt [Oswestry], Berriw (Aberrhiw), Llanrwst, St Bees, Chester and Christleton to 'Teulu Darowen' (addressed generally to the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837), Darowen) and to individual members of the Darowen family, viz. the Reverend David Richards, vicar of Llansilin, the Reverend Thomas Richards (1785-1855), Berriew, later rector of Llangynyw, M[eistresa]n Sian Rhisiard, Darowen and the Reverend Richard Richards, Caerwys, and one letter, 1822, from J[ames] Evans, Sec[retary], Cymmrodorion Institution, London to Mr Evan Evans, Grammar School, Berriew, Montgomeryshire. The subjects discussed by Evan Evans include his health, education and financial position, literary matters (references to Y Gwyliedydd), his situation in the church, etc. The other items in the volume include a draft of a letter to [ ] Parry and lines of verse entitled 'Poor little Sweep'. The present arrangement of the letters is chronological, however a list [?in the autograph of J. H. Davies] inside the front cover relates to earlier numbers preceded by the letters 'E. E.' [? for Evan Evans] which are to be found on many of the letters near the address.

Davies, Bala, 1867 (why he failed to keep a preaching engagement, a severe snowstorm), Ellis Tho[ma]s Davies, Abergele, 1893 and undated (2) (family details, books), Griffith Davies, Aberystwyth, 1873 (their decision as to which chapel the children should attend), John Davies, S. Hampstead, 1882 (offering the thanks of the Cymmrodorion Society for the addressee's contribution for their bibliographical work), J. Davies, B[irken]head, 1868 (his inability to fulfil a preaching engagement), John Davies, Bontddu, Dolgelley, 1890 (periodicals and books), and Robert Davies, Mold and Bala, 1858-61 (13, one incomplete) (Denbigh Association, the Revival, the Mold Association, a meeting in the County Hall, Bala concerning a railway line, reference to meetings to be held at the opening of Llanfor chapel, another 'Congregational Singing' day at Bala, etc.).

The file comprises a letter to David Jones from Sir John Cecil-Williams, secretary of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion.

Miscellaneous papers containing notes, transcripts, extracts, copies of his own poems, etc., by Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume and paginated 1-390. The contents include notes on the perpetual calendar carved on wood known as 'The Staffordshire Clogg' (p. 13); notes on the special alphabet usually inscribed on wooden surfaces which, according to Edward Williams, was used by Welsh bards (pp. 15-25); notes on the method of inscribing the said bardic alphabet headed 'Llyma ddangos y modd y gwneir Coelbren y Beirdd' (p. 29; see John Williams: Barddas . . ., vol. Many of these bear one of the various bardic names adopted by Edward Williams at various times ('Iorwerth Morganwg', 'Iorwerth Gwilym neu brydydd bychan Morganwg', 'Iolo Morganwg') and all may possibly be his compositions.

Interspersed among the items already noted are miscellaneous notes relating to Welsh literary, bardic, and antiquarian matters, lists of Welsh words, brief lists of miscellaneous Welsh triads, stanzas of English and Welsh verse, etc. Some of the notes are written on the blank verso, the margins, and even across the face of copies of a printed handbill issued by Henry Walters, March 1784, advertising his printing office in the town of Cowbridge, printed proposals, 1762, for the publication by the Cymmrodorion Society of a 'Natural History of the Quadrupeds and Birds of Great Britain and Ireland', a printed handbill (undated) setting forth the programme, etc. of a 'Society for the preservation of the remains of ancient British Literature . . . and for the encouragement of the National Music', etc.

The file comprises letters relating mainly to matters arising from the House of Lords and to Lady White's public work, notably in relation to environmental concerns. Some concern Welsh affairs, among them devolution, the affairs of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. A few relate to Lady White's work for the Dictionary of National Biography. Miscellaneous material relating to the Reverend William Rees, including typescript notes on his ancestry and his life up to 1830; and typewritten copies of an account of the meeting held at the Alexandra Hotel, Liverpool, 2 March 1876, to present him with an illuminated address (Baner ac Amserau Cymru, 8 Mawrth 1876), the speech he had prepared for delivery at the ceremony in which he was to be presented with the medal of The Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, 1882 (Y Cymmrodor, vol. VII, 1886, pp. 1-13), and an article by the Reverend J. Hughes, Coedpoeth, on his epic poem 'Emmanuel' (Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd, 1880, tt. 142-8).

Most of the letters, 1899-1926, concern research and publishing matters and the affairs of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion and its meetings. Many of the letters discuss the preparation and publication of Davies's Bibliography of Welsh Ballads and various articles and notes. There are occasional references to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and to the establishment of the National Library of Wales.
