Telyn y Cyssegr,

A volume entitled 'Telyn y Cyssegr. 1851', being a collection of hymns and religious poems, including translations, by D. Silvan Evans. Many of the compositions were published in D. Silvan Evans: Telyn Dyfi (Aberystwyth, 1898).

A scrap-book of D. Silvan Evans chiefly containing 'Nugae Canorae', being holographs and press cuttings of Welsh poetry by D. Silvan Evans and of Welsh translations by him of poetry by [Johann Wolfgang Von] Goethe, Anacreon, Sappho, Plato, etc.; press cuttings of reviews, 1887-97, of parts of D. Silvan Evans, Dictionary of the Welsh Language ... Geiriadur Cymraeg (Carmarthen, 1887-96); copious holographs and press cuttings by D. Silvan Evans of family memoranda (entries of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths, press cuttings of obituary notices, etc.); holograph letters to D. Rhestr o lyfrau, etc. gan D. Silvan Evans,

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing a list of eighteenth century Welsh printed books 'Had from Myrddin Fardd, July 1, 1881'; a few glossary words; and brief notes on some Carmarthenshie and Cardiganshire river names. There are also some Latin exercises (Nos. [33]-40), presumably in the hand of the original owner of the volume.

Penillion, etc.,

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Morris Davies miscellanea, etc.

(I) Miscellanea of Morris Davies. Miscellaneous scraps accumulated by Morris Davies, Bangor, including manuscript hymns and cuttings from printed hymn books; verses (incomplete?) on the death of William Oliver, Dolgoed, Rhydfendigaid (died 1828), a short biography by Gwen Evans of Francis Evans (1830-76), printer, Pwllheli, and short notes on other Pwllheli printers; cuttings of press contributions by M[orris] D[avies] on hymnology; extracts from William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), etc. (Ii) Llythyrau Morris Davies, etc. Eleven letters, 1868-76, from Morris Davies, Upper Bangor to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans at Llan ym Mawddwy and Llanwrin. The letters relate almost entirely to bibliographical matters and there are references to the recipient's edition of William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), to the writer's study of hymnology and to his collection of the works of Daniel Rowland, Llangeithio. A mass of bibliographical notes, presumably enclosed with the letters, are bound in at the end of the volume. One of these notes is written on the dorse of a printed notice of a meeting of the committee of Bangor British School, 1855.

Miscellaneous notes,

A small notebook which belonged to J. H. Davies containing bibliographical references to the Reverend Peter Williams, mainly from William Rowlands (Gwilym Lleyn) (ed. D. Silvan Evans), Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), together with a few biographical notes. At the reverse end of the volume are a few notes relating to (?) Cardiganshire Highways Committee and some observations on Sir Owen M. Edwards, perhaps for an article or an address.
