The volume is said (p. vi) to have been transcribed at Ty du, Llanberis, in July 1766, from a manuscript of William Phylip, Hendref fechan, Dyffryn Ardudwy (Cardiff MS 19, part II). There are annotations, variant forms and additions by the scribe (David Ellis), by P[eter Bailey] Williams, Llanrug (1763-1836) and O[wen] W[illiams] ('Owain Gwyrfai'), Waunfawr. The spine is lettered 'David Ellis MS'.

The third part of the manuscript contains a transcript of the text of 'Y Gododdin' ('Y Gwawdodyn') in old and modern orthography; an 'awdl' in English ('O michti Ladi, our leding...') by Ieuan ap Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd ('o Ogerddan') or Ieuan ap Hywel Swrdwal, transcribed in 1785 from a manuscript of John Jones (Sion ap Wiliam Sion), Gell[i] Lyfrdy [sic]; and 'cywyddau' and an 'awdl' by Sion Phylip, Huw Arwystl, Sion Keri, Sion Tudur, Ieuan Tew Ieuaf, Sion Tudur ('o Wicwar'), Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Sion Mowddwy, Lewis Glyn Cothi, Sion Dafydd Siancyn, Risart Phylip, and Huw Llwyd Cynfel. There are numerous additions, variants, and annotations in the hands of Owen Williams, P[eter Bailey] W[illiams], [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), and [Professor Thomas Gwynn Jones]. The manuscript is bound uniformly with Cwrtmawr MS 10 and 12 and the spine is lettered 'Dafydd Ellis MS'.

At the beginning of the volume is a list of contents ('Cynhwysiad'), an index ('Mynegres egwyddorawl') of first lines, and an index of poets ('Enwau'r Beirdd'). The greater part of the volume is based on manuscripts of Dr Griffith Roberts (1735-1808), Dolgellau (Peniarth MSS 99, 100, ?152) and on 'Cronfa Dafydd Thomas, alias Dafydd Ddu o'r Yri' (Cwrtmawr MS 72). There are annotations and additions by Owen Williams, Waunfawr, Peter Bailey Williams, Llanrug and one annotation by D[aniel] S[ilvan] Evans. The manuscript is bound uniformly with Cwrtmawr MSS 10-11 and the spine is lettered 'Dafydd Ellis MS'.

A manuscript described as 'Llyfr o hen areithiau a Chywyddau' in the hand of Michael Prichard of Llan Llyfni. It contains poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Michael Prichard, Sion Phylipp, Sion Tydur, Rhys Cain, Huw Llwyd Cynfel, Robert ab Howel ab Morgan, William Llyn, Dafydd ab Euan ab Owen, y Rhys ab Ednyfed, Owen Griffith, Thomas Lloyd [recte Prys] (Plas Iolyn), Dafydd Manuel, Wmphrey Dafydd ab Ifan ('Clochydd Llann brenn Mair'), Elis Rowland, Gryffydd ap Llywelyn Fychan, Wiliam Cynwal, Edward ap Rhys, and Thomas Llwyd (Penmen), and anonymous poems; 'Hanes y Twrstan, neu araith S. Tudyr', 'Breuddwyd Sion Tudur', and 'Prognosticasiwn Sion Tydur'; and a mediaeval Welsh glossary ('Llymma bart o'r hen Gymraeg; ar iaith arferedig wrthi') extracted from a book of Thomas Price of Plas Jolyn. The volume was compiled during the period 1726-9. There are a few additions in other hands, among them 'englynion' in praise and in memory of Michael Prichard by William Elias, [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), etc. At the end are two incomplete indexes, the one by Michael Prichard and the other by Owen Williams, Waunfawr. The spine is lettered 'Michael Prichard MS'.

There are imperfect lists of contents at the beginning of each part. Bound in at the end of the volume, also in the hand of Owen Williams, are 'englynion' ('I'r Iesu', etc.) transcribed in 1853 from a manuscript (1655) of William Salesbury of Bachymbyd; two versions of an address on 'Helynt y Cymry, eu hiaith a'u defodau, etc.' delivered at Eisteddfod Tywyn, Tre Fadog, and prepared for publication in the Carnarvon Herald; and a biography of Richard Jones ('Gwyndaf Eryri'; 1785-1848). The volume is lettered on the spine in gold: 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

The first collection, entitled 'Llwyn y Gell', includes 'cywyddau', etc. by Gruff. At the beginning is a list of poets whose titles were taken from Y Greal and a list of titles of poems transcribed in full. The collection was compiled during the period 1855-9, although the fly-leaf bears the scribe's name dated 1863. The second collection, beginning at the end, is entitled 'Y Gell Gynen, ('herwydd canau cynen sydd ynddo') and contains fliting poems ('ymrysongerddi') between Edmwnt Prys and William Cynwal and Sion Philip and Edmunt Prys, together with additional 'cywyddau' by Edmunt Prys. This section of the manuscript was compiled between 1844 and 1846, but there are some additions of the period 1859-61. Recorded on the upper end paper are timber purchase accounts of Owen Williams, 1844-5. The manuscript is lettered on the spine 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

The details are as follows: six letters, 1819-1826, to the Rev. Thomas Richards, Berriew (the education of the addressee's brother and of E. Evans [probably 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'], a 'cywydd' on the death of Mrs Bosanquet, literary matters, adverse criticism from the bishop of Llandaff [William van Mildert] of a proof-sheet of the edition of the Welsh Prayer Book which the writer had undertaken to superintend); four letters, 1820-1824, to the Rev. David Richards, Llansilin (the education of the addressee's younger brother [Lewis], literary matters, the addressee's marriage, etc.); one letter, 1839, to Miss Angharad Lloyd [sic] (the Liber Landavensis is now in the press, he has completed his Welsh version of Isaiah direct from the Hebrew); one letter, 1846, to Owen Williams, Waenfawr (literary matters, criticism of the addressee's proposed 'Vocabulary'); one letter, 1851, to [Ebenezer Thomas] Eben Fardd (re. adjudicating the 'pryddestau' on 'Golygfa Moses &c'); and one letter, 1850, to the Rev. Richard Richards [Meifod] (he is glad to hear of the addressee's success, a proposed monument to Bishop William Morgan and the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) at Llanrhaiadr yn Mochnant, plans for a commentary in Welsh on the Epistle to the Galatians etc.). Also included in the volume are extracts, 1845, from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh 'o'r Graienyn ger y Bala' ('Brawd Nain Ioan Tegid o du ei fam oedd Rowland Hugh'), transcripts of two letters, the originals of which are to be found in Peniarth MS 11, viz. a letter, 1847, from [John Jones] Tegid, Nevern to the Lady Charlotte E. Guest and a letter, 1860, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil to W. W. E. Wynne, Esq., and an outline of 'Tegid's Feet [shoes] drawn at the Vicarage Darowen at the request of ?M. D.
