Almanacs

The file includes notes on, and extracts from, the work of various almanackers, including Thomas Jones, who published an annual almanac in Welsh from 1680-1713, and Sion Rhydderch (1673-1735), whose almanac was the first to be published in Wales.

Anterliwtiau (Interludes)

The file comprises transcripts of three interludes, namely 'Ffrewyll y Methodistiad', by William Roberts of Llannor; 'Einion ap Gwalchmai' ascribed to Sion o'r Bala and Huw Jones of Langwm, c. 1760, and `Gras a Natur', 1769, by Elis Roberts, Llanddoged.

Appointments held by Thomas Jones

The series comprises correspondence and papers, 1932-1971, relating to applications for appointments and awards. It includes several testimonials written between 1932 and 1951, on behalf of Thomas Jones by T. H. Parry-Williams and J. F. Mountford, and Thomas Jones's application for the post of Professor of Welsh Language and Literature at the University College of Wales, 1951, and his application for an Emeritus Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trustees, 1970-1971.

The series comprises correspondence and papers relating to appointments in the higher education sector. These appointments were supported by Thomas Jones either through his writing of references, or through his involvement with the selection procedures.

Arthurian legend

The file comprises notes relating to Arthurian legend, including the Holy Grail, Culhwch ac Olwain, and Peredur and Perceval. Also included is a transcript of Ystoryaeu Seint Greal. Rhan 1, Y Keis, the text of which is from Peniarth 11, NLW 3063E and Peniarth 15. Thomas Jones died before completing the editing of this work, and it was published after his death by The University of Wales Press in 1992.

Catwg Ddoeth and Classical Literature

The file comprises extracts from various Welsh manuscripts containing transcripts of 'Cynghoreu Catwn', a Welsh translation of Dionysii Catonis Disticha de Moribus ad Filium. This manuscript was used by Iolo Morganwg as the basis of the wisdom literaure which he attributed to Catwg Ddoeth. Also included are notes on Classical literature, Roman satire and Lucretius.

Correspondence

The folder includes letters to, and from, Mair Jones, including her successful application for the post of Assistant Cataloguer in the National Library of Wales, 1971; a list of contributors to a collection in memory of her husband, 1972, and personal correspondence.
