The group comprises drawings and artwork of David Jones found amongst his papers, papers relating to his work as an artist, catalogues of exhibitions by him and others, invitations to exhibitions, and postcards and artwork which he accumulated.

Correspondence

David Jones was a prolific letter writer, and his correspondents were multifarious. He was part of a circle of young Catholic intellectuals, and was connected with artistic and literary circles, as well as a more aristocratic circle. He would often write many drafts of a letter before completing it, especially when writing to the press or to a scholar or critic. The correspondence deals with matters relating to religion, art, literature, history, Wales and more personal matters. -- The group comprises letters to David Jones from friends, acquaintances, publishers and art galleries; drafts letters from David Jones to friends, draft letters to the editors of newspapers; and copies of letters published in Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, edited by René Hague.

Literary manuscripts

The group (mainly from the '1978 purchase', but also including material from Groups A, B and C where appropriate) comprises the literary manuscripts of David Jones, with manuscript drafts of In Parenthesis: seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu (1937), The anathemata: fragments of an attempted writing (1952), Epoch and Artist: selected writings by David Jones, edited by Harman Grisewood (1959), The Sleeping Lord and other fragments(1974), The Dying Gaul and other writings edited by Harman Grisewood (1978) and The Roman quarry and other sequences edited by Harman Grisewood and René Hague (1981). There are also typescript drafts, proofs, broadcast scripts, and reviews relating to some of the above publications. -- Some literary works published by David Jones were also included in later publications. For material relating to The Fatigue (1965) and The Tribune's Visitations (1969) see Sleeping Lord (1974). For material relating to The Introduction to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1972) and Use and Sign (1975) see The Dying Gaul (1978). For material relating to the Kensington Mass (1975) and The Narrows (1981) see The Roman Quarry (1981).

Personalia

The group comprises personal documents, diaries, documents relating to David Jones' service during the First World War, papers relating to David Jones' father and to family funerals, medical records, financial papers, receipts and bills, and a list of David Jones' books.

The group comprises eight articles written about David Jones, research material accumulated by him, copies of articles and creative work sent to him by others, press cuttings, pamphlets and printed material. The material may originally have been sent to him with accompanying letters, which may be listed with the correspondence.
