Ann Williams, Merthyr, to her father, Mr Edward Williams, Bard, Flimston, Near Cowbridge,

Acknowledging his letter of the 22nd inst. Is sorry to hear that he is so distressed - her own difficult circumstances. A message from Tally concerning Mr Vaughan's papers. Tally is much afraid that the work will not be out before the Brecon meeting and so is she. Various questions. She hopes he will strive to bring the Preface to the press as soon as possible. [?Ann Williams], Merthyr, to her father, (per Jane),

She is very sorry to find that he has been so poorly. Her brother is afraid that it will be out of his power to finish his ode in time for competition; this will entirely prevent his going to the Eisteddfod as he cannot afford to go unassisted. On the dorse are some notes on the meaning of certain words and phrases, and an incomplete hymn on John XII, 35, 36, &c.

Ann Williams, Merthyr, to her sister, Margaret Williams, Bridgend,

Thomas Bedford called here today. She received her father's letter - is very glad to hear that the addressee and her father are better than they have been. She has five scholars and expects to have more soon. Wishing to know whether her father has gone to Carmarthen or not and how Mr Trahern(e) of St Hillary received him. Her mother joins her in love to them both. Telling her to be sure to answer this directly. Has she got chip to make bonnets or not?

Anna Harding, Southern Down, to Mr Williams.

She has this day received a most obliging letter from Mr Palmer from the tone of which she is inclined to think that the addressee has been altogether misinformed and deceived upon the subject of his West Indian property. Mr Palmer never received any coffee nor does he believe the parties are gone to the Spanish Continent, but he is most ready to give the addressee advice and assistance of every sort.

Anna Seward: Sonnet

Autograph manuscript, dated 11 September 1799 (watermark 1794), of Anna Seward's 'Sonnet for the drawer in the thatched shed by the brook at Plas Newydd'. It was published, with a very few minor alterations, in The Poetical Works of Anna Seward, ed. by Walter Scott, 3 vols (Edinburgh, 1810), III, 314.
Seward stayed with Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby, The Ladies of Llangollen, at their Plas Newydd home for four days in September 1799 (see Letters of Anna Seward: Written between the years 1784 and 1807, ed. by A. Constable, 6 vols (Edinburgh, 1811), V, 248-53).

Seward, Anna, 1742-1809

Anna Seward, Lichfield, to Mr Edward Williams, Fleet Street, London,

But for the dangerous illness of a friend she would not have been so long silent to the contents of the addressee's packet. Her resolve with regard to applications made to her for subscription to verses and other publications. 'I do see Genius pervading the mists of obscure birth, & incultivate education in the sweet, & polished numbers of your Welch Translation.' Her concern that Nature made him the fatal present of a spirit and an imagination so raised above the sphere in which he was destined to move. Mr John Nichols, Editor of the Gentleman's Magazine, will, she dares believe, oblige her by advancing at her request her subscription and that of William Grove, esq., of Lichfield, to the addressee's Poems. She has twice had the pleasure of be[ing in] company with Miss More and her sisters. Endorsed: 'Miss Seward'.

Anne Jones, Kerry, to Taliesin Williams,

Anne Jones, The Moat, Kerry, to Mr Taliesin Williams, Merthyr Tydvil. Her sister, Mrs Jenkins, requests her to inform him that she received his collection of minerals and fossils safely, about a fortnight after the death of Mr Jenkins, but in time to be sent with the other specimens to the Museum at York. The copies of Cyfrinach y Beirdd likewise arrived safely. A question concerning the three MS music-books written by the addressee's father - Mrs Jenkins intends leaving this place in the course of a fortnight to reside at Crosswood near Welshpool.
