Praça do Comércio in which stands a statue of Dom Jose I on horseback mounted on an ornamental plinth. Behind the statue is an ornate arched gateway flanked by public buildings. On top of the arch, Glory stands a full 23 feet high and holds laurels over Valor and Genius. The inscription reads: VIRTUTIBUS MAIORUM UT SIT OMNIBUS DOCUMENTO.
