'A Note on David Jones'

The file comprises offprints and proofs of a brief article by Aneirin Talfan Davies entitled 'A Note on David Jones', published in Poetry Wales, vol. 2, no. 1 (Spring 1966), pp. 33-6). A covering letter from the author is dated 6 May 1966.

Davies, Aneirin Talfan

A Note on Mr Berenson's Views

The file comprises a manuscript draft (numbered 1-21) of 'A note on Mr Berenson's Views', first published in the Dublin Review in April 1950 as a review of Aesthetics and History by Bernard Berenson. Also a complete typescript copy (1-15) and complete galley proofs (1-4).

Berenson, Bernard.

A1

The file comprises the earliest manuscript draft of the work, which corresponds to The Anathemata pp. 46-53 and 241-243. ff. 1,3,5 and 7 form a sequence, written mostly in pencil, on paper which does not recur among the other drafts. ff. 1 and 3 are headed by David Jones in blue crayon 'MS B'. The manuscript indicates that The Anathemata and the sequence published as 'The Agent' in The Roman Quarry at this stage formed part of the same work. (See René Hague's notes in The Roman Quarry).

A2

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink, generally in ink where the text has reached some degree of finality. Mostly bearing David Jones' first foliation, but some also with second and third foliation. The whole of the text is an insertion into the primary text represented by A1.

A3

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink, which is an insertion into the text formed by A1 and A2 made after the second foliation. The pages are mostly numbered 37 by David Jones on a mixture of blue and white paper. This insertion expanded rapidly and became the second half of 'Middle-Sea and Lear-Sea', the whole of 'Angle-Land', Redriff' and 'The Lady of the Pool' and the beginning of 'Keel, Ram, Stauros'.

A4

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink, which corresponds to The Anathemata, pp. 194-221, the second part of 'Mabinogi's Liturgy', but is very incomplete. Many of the pages are numbered 62 and 133-5, which shows that this text is an insertion into the A1 and A2 text begun after the second foliation. On A4.13 material from A5 has been inserted, which appears to show that the greater part of A5 predates these latest drafts of A4.

A5

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink (mostly in black ink), which corresponds to The Anathemata, pp. 61-74. Many of the pages are numbered 11, and this text forms an excursus based on the passage which occurs in A2 on a page numbered 11 in the second foliation.

A6

The file comprises a manuscript draft dated 1949 by David Jones which includes notes for the typist on typesetting. This, combined with A7, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. It is written in black ink and many pages are numbered 5 A-F and 37 A-P, as well as 1-73 by David Jones. The text corresponds to the first four sections and the beginning of section V (pp. 49-61, 84-98, 110-134) of The Anathemata. See AZ for manuscripts that correspond to the missing pages 97-113, and AX and AX-Y for material corresponding to missing pages 61-82 to be inserted on folio 16.

A7

The file comprises a manuscript draft by David Jones written in black ink, which includes markings for the typist. This, combined with A6, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. The text corresponds to part of section V, and all of sections VI-VII except for the last page, (pp. 134-242) of The Anathemata. Many pages at the beginning are numbered 37P by David Jones.

AC

The file comprises a manuscript in pencil of material added to the typescript of the preface, mainly notes to page 1 of the preface.

Accountant and Tax

The file comprises papers, 1931, 1937-1938, and 1943-1963, mainly letters from David Jones' accountant, Ethel Watts relating to Income Tax and also to the will of James Jones, David Jones' father.

Watts, Ethel

AD

The file comprises a manuscript in pencil of material added to the proofs of the preface, explaining why the notes are printed with the text, and also an acknowledgement dated April 1952. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood (f. 6).

Addenda

The file comprises carbon copies of René Hague's typescript notes for his Commentary, with some additional manuscript notes in his hand.

Addenda

The file comprises letters about the preparation of Dai Greatcoat from René Hague, Peter du Sautoy, Diana Austin, Catherine Carver, William Blissett, Faber and Faber, and others, including revisions and comments on proof readings.

Du Sautoy, Peter

Agathon and Art

The file comprises a manuscript draft of a writing by David Jones concerning the nature of art. It possibly relates to 'A Note on Mr. Bereson's View' (1950), published in Epoch and Artist.

Agenda Galley proofs

The file contains galley proofs of the text of 'The Dream of Private Clitus' published in the David Jones Special Number of Agenda, vol. 5, nos 1-3 (Spring - Summer 1967), pp. 11-17. These proofs have been corrected, but not, apparently, by David Jones.

Agenda Page proofs

The file contains page proofs of 'The Dream of Private Clitus' (two separate sets of proofs, both incomplete, one paginated 11-12 and the other 79-86), corrected by David Jones. One set appears to be of the text published in the David Jones Special Number of Agenda.

Agenda proofs

The file comprises page proofs (corrected) of the texts of 'A, a, a, Domine Deus', 'The Wall', 'The Dream of Private Clitus', 'The Tutelar of the Place', 'The Hunt' and 'The Sleeping Lord' published in the David Jones Special Issue of Agenda, vol. 5, nos 1-3 (Spring - Summer 1967), pp. 5-54.
