Undergraduate work

The series comprises notebooks and exercise books relating to Maurice James's BA English course at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, 1934-1938. These contain notes on English literature, French language and literature and medieval & Welsh history. These are written partly in shorthand.

Postgraduate work

The series contains Maurice James's postgraduate work at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, including material relating to his Teacher's Diploma (1938-1939), his thesis, 1939-1940 and 1946-1948, as well as details of his extracurricular activities.

Military service

The series comprises various papers collected during Maurice James's military service, during and after the Second World War (in Britain and Italy), 1940-1946. These include official military papers and correspondence, answer books for Russian tests and an account of the trial of General Bellomo in which he participated.

Teaching career

The series comprises notes on set reading and lesson notes dating from Maurice James's time as a teacher in Huddersfield, 1948-1957. There are also notes for a school production of Macbeth directed by Maurice James.

Literary works

The series contains a variety of poetry and prose works composed at various times during Maurice James's lifetime.

Letters

The series consists of letters written by and to Maurice James, numerous testimonials from teachers and lecturers and various postcards and newspaper cuttings, 1938-1962. The correspondence is mainly with his family, college friends and army friends during the War, and with friends in Huddersfield.

Scrapbooks

The series consists of notebooks used by Maurice James mainly as scrapbooks and diaries, 1937-[c. 1945]. The diary sections record, amongst other things, his reminiscences of Italy in 1937, his stay in Colwyn Bay while in the Royal Corps of Signals, 1941, and the sea voyage to Algiers in 1943. Numerous poems written by him are included as are copies of various letters sent by him. In addition, the volumes have numerous insertions. These include various letters, mainly relating to the period of his military service, as well as several military documents, 1940-1947. There are also some examples of poetry and prose inserted. A few items date from 1955 to 1956.

Miscellaneous papers

The series contains miscellaneous items, including an used cheque book, 1939, a music sheet, two dust jackets, four unused envelopes from Italy, a book inscribed 'P.James Signal & Telegraph Dept. Oswestry, GW 37' containing some writing in ancient Greek with English translations, and a school exercise book entitled 'Francais, M. Maurice Jaques, Classe VI, Detail Study'.
