Sports boycott,

Material relating to apartheid in sport, and national and local campaigns organised by the Anti-Apartheid Movement calling for a sports boycott of South Africa. Most of the campaigns concern Welsh rugby and cricket tours of South Africa, and South African participation in international sport. Material comprises briefings and reports, circulars, letters, press statements and releases, and press cuttings. May also include conference papers and official campaign packs.

Consumer boycott and sanctions,

Material relating to campaigns organised by the Anti-Apartheid Movement calling for the support of consumer boycotts and sanctions against South African goods and services, such as the national campaign "Boycott Apartheid '89", as well as activities in South Wales focusing on boycotting local shops selling South African goods. Files may include letters, reports, newsletters, briefings, press cuttings and promotional material, and campaign packs.

Cultural boycott,

Material relating to boycotts against cultural events, such as concerts, film screenings, and artistic competitions, which included South African performers or promoted any links to apartheid South Africa. Also material relating to the opposition of UK artists travelling to, or performing in, South Africa. Events and artists targeted include the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod, Simple Minds and Shirley Bassey, amongst others. Files may include letters, press cuttings, event programmes and other printed items.

Economic campaigns and sanctions,

Material relating to campaigns of an economic nature, including those boycotting gold and jewelry of South African origin, campaigns against banks that were investing and operating in South Africa, campaigns supporting oil embargoes placed on South Africa and Namibia, campaigns discouraging foreign investment in South Africa, and campaigns calling for the implementation of sanctions against the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Also contains lists of companies trading in South Africa and information on the shareholdings of several British and European companies with suspected links to Apartheid.

Fair elections and independence,

Material relating to campaigns for democracy in South Africa organised and promoted by the Anti-Apartheid Movement and the African National Congress. Also contains material pertaining to campaigns assisting the struggle for freedom in other countries in the Southern Africa region such as Angola, Mozambique and Namibia.

Other campaigns and events,

Material relating to Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) activities in support of a variety of international, and national, campaigns against apartheid South Africa. Also material relating to events organised at a local level such as sponsored walks, boycotts of local shops and businesses, concerts, protests and rallies.

Boycotts,

Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) correspondence with UK and international organisations and groups relating to consumer and sports boycott activities carried out by the organisation, most of which relates to rugby tours of South Africa.

Circulars,

Printed circulars sent by the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) Central Office and the African National Congress (ANC) to Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) members. Also circulars distributed by WAAM to its members and affiliates. The circulars are mainly routine in nature, comprising notices of committee meetings, membership renewals and information relating to specific campaign activities or sponsored events.

General correspondence,

Correspondence with embassies, foreign governments, UK politicians, local and national government officials, UK trade union organisations, WAAM supporters, the central AAM office and other anti-apartheid groups, reflecting all aspects of Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) activity. Also contains informational copies of letters and correspondence sent to WAAM officers in relation to a particular subject or international anti-apartheid campaign.

Newsletters and bulletins,

Printed Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM), Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) and African National Congress (ANC) newsletters issued for their members and affiliates. Also printed reports and consultative documents produced in support of various campaigns and as part of national and international anti-apartheid policy debate.
