Bound minutes of meetings held by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The minutes cover the Association's general meetings, special meetings, annual meetings and meetings of the Council. The early volumes also contain the minutes of the Cardiff District Board to May 1892 (see A1-5) and the Finance Committee meetings to March 1888 (see A1-3). The minutes include the original motion to form The Association of Iron and Coal Masters; negotiations leading to the formation of The Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association; the division of the Association into 3 districts (Cardiff, Newport and Swansea); consideration of reports from the district boards and various appointed committees - such as the House Coal Owners Committee, Finance Committee, owners' side of the Sliding Scale Committee, the Coal Shippers Committee, etc.; discussions and resolutions embodying the Association's general policy on such issues as wage rate changes, strikes, the Sliding Scales, the Conciliation Board, Home Office Special Rules, etc.; approval of applications for membership and acceptance of resignations from existing members; decisions on policy to be adopted towards Government Bills and Acts affecting the mining interest; relations with the Mining Association of Great Britain; and all matters affecting the coal industry of South Wales are covered generally.

Administrative files created and kept by the Commercial Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The department dealt mainly with commercial aspects of coal mining, which included the maintenance and use of railway wagons for coal transport, the negotiation of special railway rates and dock charges for the transport and shipping of coal, the negotiation with foreign countries for the exchange of Welsh coals for pitwood during wartime, the loading of coal and provision of special machinery at docks, compliance with government legislation on the health and safety of miners, negotiations with miners' groups on wages and holidays, and representation in the Mining Association of Great Britain.

Files created by the Pitwood Department relating to the supply and transportation of pitwood for use in Welsh collieries. Material comprises mainly correspondence, written between the Coal Owners Association and the Forestry Commission, the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Pitwood Importers Association, the Great Western Railway Co., the Ministry of Supply, and the Mining Association of Great Britain Timber Advisory.

A series of administrative files, arranged by subject, consisting mainly of correspondence, circulars, memoranda, reports, meeting notes and miscellaneous papers, and printed items.

Material relating to the introduction of the Mines Eight Hours Act in South Wales collieries, the response of various coal companies and miners' organisations to the legislation, and the effects of the Act on the mining industry in Wales. Material comprises reports, counsel's opinions, Conciliation Board sub-committee minutes and extracts of minutes, meeting notes, owners' manifestos, circulars, letters and correspondence, newspaper cuttings, statistical statements and summaries, and some printed material.

Records of applications by various collieries, and colliery groups, to join the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, including queries to the Secretary, procedural points, notifications of transferences of collieries and price-list details provide the bulk of the correspondence.

Material related to the work of the Board of Conciliation for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales, comprising minutes of meetings, minutes of proceedings, applications for changes in wages, and Board Agreements and Awards.

Material related to the work of the Colliery Officials' Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of meetings of the Board of Conciliation for the Owners and Officials of Collieries in South Wales and Monmouthshire, and minutes of proceedings of meetings between the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Officials' Association. Matters discussed relate mainly to the stabilisation of wages, holidays, payment of wages during illness and issues involving individual cases of dispute.

Material related to the work of the Colliery Weighers' Conciliiation Board, comprising transcripts of meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Colliery Weighers Association. Discussions relate to disputes over wage rates at particular collieries.

Material related to the work of the National Conciliation Board for the Coal Mining Industry comprising minutes of proceedings of the National Board for the Coal Industry, 1921, with awards, interpretations and the Constitution and Rules of Procedure of the Board; and minutes, agenda and papers for meetings of the Joint National Negotiating Committee, 1944-1945. Also included is an Agreement, 1943, between the Mining Association, Miners' Federation of Great Britain, the various owners' associations, and the various workmen's associations, to establish the National Conciliation Scheme.

Material related to the work of the Joint Sub-committee of the Conciliation Board appointed to deal with the rate of wages and conditions of employment for Banksmen at various Associated Collieries.

Material related to the work of the Craftsmen's Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of proceedings and agreements and awards.

Material related to the work of the Windingmen's Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of proceedings and agreements and awards.

Transcripts of Mechanical and Surface Workers' Conciliation Board meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Mechanical and Surface Workers' Union. Discussions mainly concerned the clarification of the different classes of workmen (for purposes of representation), the setting up of a joint committee, and a variety of disputes at numerous collieries.

Material related to the work of the Coke-Oven and By-Product Workers' Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of proceedings and awards granted by the Conciliation Board. The Conciliation Board meetings included representatives of the Owners' and Workers' sides of various groups, as follows: representatives from the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Oven and By-Products Works Association and representatives of the National Union of Cokemen and By-Product Workers; representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Oven and By-Product Works Association and of the South Wales Miners' Federation; between representatives of the Disputes Committee of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Ovens and By-Product Works Association; the Monmouthshire and South Wales Cokeowners' Association and the South Wales Miners' Federation; and of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Ovens and By-Product Works Association and the South Wales Miners' Federation and the National Union of Cokemen and By-Product Workers. Matters discussed related to topics such as rates of pay and conditions of employment of coke oven and by-product workers in the South Wales coalfield, and also individual claims of workmen employed at various collieries.

Material related to the work of the Clerical Workers' Conciliation Board, comprising verbatim minutes of proceedings between representatives of the Coal Owners Association and representatives of the National Union of Clerks, and some meetings between the Coal Owners Association and the Mining, Clerical and Administrative Workers' Guild. Also included in this series are résumés of joint meetings of Owners and Clerks, which considered individual cases of dispute, and an agreement between the Coal Owners Association and the National Union of Clerks relating mainly to remuneration and conditions of employment of clerical staff at associated collieries.

Material related to the work of the Board of Conciliation for the Owners and Officials of Collieries in South Wales and Monmouthshire, or as it was generally referred to, the Joint Examiners' Conciliation Board. Material in this series comprises minutes of proceedings, résumés of cases, and agreements and awards.

The minutes cover a range of activities, such as the Boards' considerations of claims for compensation made by members within the district; resolutions embodying its recommendations on these claims for the consideration of Association meetings; preliminary hearings on individual disputes; pursuing investigations of disputes and agreeing on settlements; consideration of reports from members; preliminary consideration of applications to join, or leave, the Association; annual revisions of Assurances of members; the election of officers and the implementation of Association policy within the district.
