Much of the material relates to the strike and lock out in the coal industry in 1926. Many of the records derive from the Oceal Coal Company, the United National Collieries Ltd., the Bute docks, the South Wales and Monmouthshire Coalowners' Association, Wilson, Sons and Co. Ltd., and Captain J. Glynn-Jones.

Many of the letters from the period 1901-05 were written by David Davies to his relatives and associates while he travelled extensively abroad. Some of the letters from 1917-18 discuss demobilisation or reconstruction in the wake of the First World War.
