Estate administration papers (Denbighshire)

The group consists of administration papers for the Denbighshire estates, comprising leases, 1756-1906, papers concerning enclosures and commons, 1802-1848, timber and mineral exploitation, 1748-1814, sporting rights, 1912, estate accounts, 1759-1911, and maps and plans, 1776-1866.

The group comprises rentals, 1658-1784, papers concerning crown rents, 1791-1845, estate accounts, 1708-1836, surveys and valuations, 1751-1880, and plans and elevations, [pre-1811]-1835, for various parts of the estate in the parishes of Henllan, Denbigh, Llanefydd, Llanrwst, Nantglyn and Rhuddlan.

The group comprises original and copy wills, administration bonds, occasional inventories and other documents associated with probate belonging to the main families of Griffith of Garn, 1685-1835, Hughes of Gwydir, Weeg, Llwyn Gronw and Cae'r berllan, 1670-1823, Roberts of Bryn y neuadd, 1714-1774, Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm Mein and Plasnewydd, 1782, 1811, Wynne of Voelas, 1732, and two other families, Griffith (ancestors of Davies of Trewylan), 1666, and Chambres of Plas Chambres, 1704.

Letters (Griffith family)

The group comprises letters written by members of the Griffith family of Garn, mainly the family of John Wynne Griffith, and close relatives, 1724, 1783-1876, with many details of family life, social activities, travel abroad, the children's school and university days, the progression of John Wynne Griffith's sons in their careers and assistance to their father in managing the estate, and acquaintance with other well-known families in north-east Wales, such as Clough, Kirkwall, Shipley, Jones of Llysmeirchion and Wynne of Plasnewydd, and letters from other correspondents addressed to various members of the Griffith family, 1733-1943, on many different subjects, the most frequently recurrent being estate business, particularly disputes over enclosures and encroachments, rights on crown lands, purchase of property and questions of title, legal and financial complications of the Plasnewydd estate trust, Denbigh borough and parliamentary elections, contemporary national and local events during the Napoleonic Wars, and public duties of individuals.

Letters (other families)

The group comprises mainly letters written to members of the families related by marriage to Griffith of Garn, such as Hughes of Gwydir, Llwyn Gronw, Cae'r berllan and Weeg, 1713-1823, Roberts of Bryn y neuadd, 1705-1757, and Wynne of Garthmeilio and Plasnewydd, 1793-1831, together with miscellaneous recipients, 1680-1882, mainly on Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire parliamentary elections, church matters, inheritance, debt and domestic affairs.

Memorandum books and diaries

The group comprises personal diaries, 1793-1839, small pocket notebooks and almanacks, 1701-1853, of the Hughes family of Gwydir, Llwyn Gronw and Cae'r berllan, and of the Griffith family of Garn, containing memoranda and personal notes of social and work engagements, accounts, family life, health problems, snippets of local and national news, poetry, recipes, household and estate management, weather conditions, journeys, hunting, shooting and fishing, useful addresses, sketches. The memorandum books are more sporadic and miscellaneous in nature than the diaries, where the format is comparatively regular. Many of the volumes contain loose enclosures of various types.

School and career papers

The group comprises a school roll, papers of clerkship, certificates of ordination and appointments of individuals from the Hughes family of Weeg, 1746, and the Griffith family of Garn, 1803-1834, 1915-1920.
