Saunders Lewis

The file comprises forty letters from Saunders Lewis to David Jones, relating to David Jones' literature, broadcasts, and art exhibitions, and to Saunders Lewis's plays, Tynged yr Iaith and to his incarceration. There are two letters from Margaret, Saunders Lewis' wife (ff. 2-3), and a letter from Thomas Charles Edwards, 1937 (f. 1).

Siwan

The file comprises a typescript copy (possibly a broadcast script) of an English translation of Siwan by Saunders Lewis. Siwan was translated as A King's daughter in 1954, and a translation by Emyr Humphreys was published in Presenting Saunders Lewis, ed. Alun R. Jones and Gwyn Thomas (Cardiff, 1973).

'The lion and the owl'

The file contains a typescript draft, 1951, of 'The lion and the owl', a translation by Glyn Jones of 'Blodeuwedd' by Saunders Lewis. Also included is a programme, tickets and press cuttings of reviews of the play presented at the Everyman Theatre, Cardiff, 1955.

David Jones

The file comprises letters and papers relating to David Jones, writer and artist, collected by Ray Howard-Jones, a friend of many years. The papers include correspondence with his niece after his death, letters from Saunders Lewis and Jack Raymond Jones, obituary notices, press cuttings relating to his life and career, papers relating to a memorial exhibition for him, in which Ray Howard-Jones took part, a newsletter of the David Jones Society, a poem by Ray Howard-Jones in his memory, and other papers, together with a photocopy of part of a letter in the hand of David Jones.

Photocopies of drafts and proofs of works by Saunders Lewis, comprising Problemau Prifysgol, Cymru Fydd, Y Cyrnol Chabert and T1938, 'Cell y Grog', Dwy Briodas Ann and the English version of 'Serch yw'r Doctor' (see NLW MSS 22953-4, 22956-8, 22960-2), together with a copy of Steven Runciman, The Sicilian Vespers (Cambridge, 1958) used by Saunders Lewis while compiling notes for a play set in the Pope's palace at Orvieto, 1281 (see NLW MS 22959).

Original manuscript of the Welsh text of Saunders Lewis's address to the jury during his trial at Caernarfon Assizes, October 1936, for arson at the Penyberth Bombing School. The Welsh text, described by Saunders Lewis as 'partly strict translation but in part a separate and different composition' (see NLW MS 22951C, f. i), was subsequently published as a pamphlet Paham y Llosgasom yr Ysgol Fomio (1936).

David Jones letter to Saunders Lewis

A letter, November 1954 (dated 'Calan Gaeaf MCMLIV' [1 November 1954] but completed at a later date), and decorated with a coloured inscription, from the artist and writer David Jones to the dramatist, poet and critic Saunders Lewis.
The letter contains personal news and refers to the Lewis's contribution to a radio broadcast about David Jones transmitted on the Welsh Home Service, 29 October 1954 (see NLW, Alun Oldfield-Davies Papers 27 for a copy of the script).
