Barddoniaeth Huw Morys, etc.

A collection of 'cerddi', 'carolau', etc. by Hugh Morris, together with a 'cerdd' by Huw Jones, Llangwm, a 'cerdd' by the Reverend Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], anonymous 'englynion, 'carolau' and some financial accounts, 1805 and undated. The volume is in the hand of Huw Jones, Llangwm, with a few later additions by Elizabeth Maurice and by Mary Richards, Darowen. It belonged to Thomas Powel, 1804, and Martha Powel, 1805, and also bears the names of Henry Powel, 1756, John Jones, carpenter, Pentregayr [Oswestry] and Martha Edwards.

A manuscript largely in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen containing 'Llyma ddeall y pader ynghymraeg' ('o lawysgrifen ar femrwn cyn 1600'); 'Copi o Ramadeg Gymrae[g] rhai a ddywed Gramadeg Coronwy Owain y dechreu yn eisie'); 'cywyddau', 'englynion' and some 'penillion' by Robin ddu, Dafydd Gorllech, Guttun Owain ('Meredith ab Rhys medd eraill'), Sion Philip, Sypyn Cyfeiliog, Edmund Prys, William Philip, Howel Bedo, Owen Gryffudd, Edward Morys, Owen Robert, Hugh Morys, William Elias, Dafydd ap Gwilim, John Rogers, Ifan Tew Brydydd and Bedo Brwynllys, and anonymous poetry, the greater part of the poetry by Owen Gruffydd and copied 'o Lyfyr Owen Gruffydd'; there are later verses by 'Dewi ab Ioan', (Blaen Afon), David Charles [Carmarthen], Thomas Jones (Maes y Cerndi), J. Blackwell ['Alun'] and [David Richards] ('D[ewi] Silin'); and a copy of a letter from W[alter] Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], 1817 (the establishment in Montgomeryshire of an Auxiliary Society in aid of the British and Foreign Bible Society). The manuscript is in the form of two books, of which one was partly used, c. 1820, by 'J. H. M. L.' to record 'Adnotationes quaedam admodum miscellaniae', including a list of titles of Welsh airs, a list of Welsh expressions and their English equivalents and notes on the accidence of the Welsh language. Used as the upper end paper is a fragment of an 18th century answer of Christopher Welcker the elder, one of the defendants to the bill of complaint of Wm. Sherlock and Frances, his wife, and James Blundell and Mary, his wife, complainants.

Llyfr Hir Mair Richards,

A manuscript consisting largely of transcripts and memoranda by Mary Richards and Thomas Richards of Darowen. The volume appears originally to have been used as an account book of receipts and disbursements in respect of the farms of Llwyn, Cafnmaelen and Byrthlwydd [parish of Dolgellau, Merioneth], 1799-1802, and also to record biographies of [James Crichton, 'The Admirable'], Sir Francis Walsingham, Sir Francis Drake and William Cecil, Lord Burghley. A volume originally used fairly extensively by Thomas Richards, Darowen as a rentroll of tithes set in the parish of Darowen, 1824-31. Beginning at the end, also in the hand of Thomas Richards, are a note from the Shrewsbury Chronicle, 1829, on the 'Rearing of Apple Trees'; medical, veterinary and household recipes; and accounts of receipts and disbursements (tithes, road rates, rents, etc.) of Thomas Richards, 1827-31. The remainder of the volume was used by Mary Richards, circa 1850-4, to record transcripts of a list of books in the library of Thomas Richards, Darowen; letters from Evan Richards to Thomas Richard[s], curate of Eglwys fach, near Dovy furnace, undated (religious meditations, a pocket Bible), Ch. A composite volume comprising two notebooks originally used by the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837) for personal and family memoranda and accounts (mainly 1821-37) of debts, wages paid to female servants, tithes, provisions, payments of interest and repayments of debts. It also includes accounts, 1816-24, between H. L. Eddes Gwynne and the Reverend Thomas Richards relating to Hirnant rents. The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen to record transcripts of letters, mainly between various members of the Richards family but including also letters from R. (a tribute to the recipient's friendship, the writer's reading, the success of Field Marshal W[ellington], the death of the Rev Mr [Thomas] Robinson of Leicester), Richard Jones, Erwystyffylau [Llanwnda] ['Gwyndaf Eryri'] ('enw o Fardd') to [Griffith Williams, 'Gutyn Peris'], 1815 (the publication of the recipient's Ffrwyth Awen, the writer's letter in defence of the poets) (endorsed are Englynion I Anerch Ffrwyth Awen'), J. Among the miscellaneous documents are printed minutes of a committee held at the Bull's Head, Llangefni, 18 November 1825, to discuss the erection of a monument in the cathedral church of Bangor and a tablet in the parish church of Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf in memory of the late Reverend Goronwy Owen, A.M. (directed to Mr David Owen, Geirwen, Pwllheli); 'Carol Plygain ar Falldod Dolgelleu', 1813, by 'W. D.'; holograph poetry by J[ohn] Thomas ['Siôn Wyn o Eifion'], 1813, including 'Lines on Friendship. Composed by an afflicted hand', 'Lines composed by an humble hand on his Library; which is made up, almost entirely, of books given him by Mrs Hughes, her sister Mrs E. Nanney, Miss Williams, &c.', 'on Longing', and 'Lines on New Year's Day'; verses entitled 'Love and Friendship' (endorsed 'Ann Will[i]ams'); and holograph observations by Samuel Roberts ['S. R.'], Llanbryn Mair, on Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'): Palestina (1851); etc. On one of the fly-leaves is an imperfect list of scribes ('Rhestr o enwau ysgrifenwyr y Llythyrau sydd yn y Llyfr hwn') in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with additions by J. H. Davies.

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. 'hir a thoddaid' and an 'englyn' by Ceiriog in memory of [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd', and a letter from J. C[eiriog] Hughes, Caersws to W. A. Swettenham, 1879 (permanent way materials on hand and wanted), a letter (incomplete) from [Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys')], Bangor to an unnamed correspondent, [18]78 (the addressee's request to have his letters returned), A. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

Gwaith Ieuan Lleyn, etc.

A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is in two parts, the first part (pp. 1-198) containing poetry mainly by Ieuan Lleyn, with some items also by John Jones, Glan y Gors (beginning wanting), R. Ll. Ddu, Cyllidydd, Pwllheli, 1821, Morrus Dwyfech alias Morrus ab Ifan ab Einion, Owen Gruffydd, Thomas Glyn Llifon, Rich[ar]d Hughes, Cadwaladr Cesail, Sion Roger, D. Drefriw and G. Felyn, y Parchedig Evan Evans 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir', Rod. Jones y Crydd, Dafydd Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Rhobyn or Bettws [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], W[illia]m Llyn, W[illia]m Thomas y Llongwr, Ebeneser Tomas neu Cybi Eifion, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', and [John Roberts ] 'S[ion] Lleyn'. Other items in the first part include a draft of a letter, undated, from Evan Pr[ichard] [i.e. 'Ieuan Lleyn'] to an unnamed correspondent (p. 89) (a request for [the mastership of] the free school belonging to the parishes of Rhiw, Bryncroes, Aberdaron and Llanfaelrhys if W[illia]m Owen is turned out), a (?)copy of a letter, 1791, from Ieuan Rich[ar]d, Ty Mawr to an unnamed correspondent whom he addresses as 'Enwog Fardd' (p. 95) (he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod held at Llanrwst; verse in strict and free metre), a (?)translation of a speech by Mr Hodgins [sic], an operative cotton spinner, respecting the Combination Laws, and a speech in Welsh on freedom ('From Walter Davies's Essay [Rhyddid (1791) ]'). The pages following (i.e. 191-8) appear to be in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'). Between part I and part II are some items (press cuttings, poetry, etc.) inserted by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including 'Gwaith Siarl Marc'. Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn). Part II is in three sections, the first consisting of 90 pp. and containing poetry by Gronwy Ddu o Fôn, Robert ab Gwilym [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], Llanystumdwy, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ab Daf. ab Ieuan ab Rhys, W[illia]m Lleyn, Rhys Llwyd ab Rhys ab Ricart, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Tudur Aled, H. ab O. Gwynedd, John Fychan o Gaergai, Thomas Llwyd or penman, M.D.(qr. Morrys Dwyfech), Daf[y]dd Thomas, Michael Prichard, Llanllyfni, Humphrey Daf[y]dd ab Evan, Clochydd Llanbry[n]mai[r], Tho[ma]s Evans, Richard Philips, Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughn, Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug, Dafydd ab Rhys, Morys ab Howel ab Tudor, Sion Tudur o wicwair, Sion Cent, Mr Thomas Prys, Plas Iolyn, Edward Ralph neu Râff, Rhys Cain, Ieuan Tew Brydydd, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd hir, Tudur Penllyn, Syr Rhys o Garno, Daf[y]dd Llwyd ap Llywelyn Gryffydd, Esqr. o Fathafarn y[n] swydd Drefaldwyn and Bedo Brwynllys (or Gryffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn fychan). There are copies of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed in Breton and Cornish on pages 34-6. This section was written c. 1797-99 at Llangian and at Llanddeiniolen, where it was completed 31 May 1799 (p.90). Part IIb comprises 38 pp. and contains poetry by Ieuan Lleyn, Huw Ifan Gynt o Lanllyfni alias Hywel Eryri, y Parchedig Evan Evans alias Ieuan y Prydydd hir and W[illiam Evans or Fedw arian, preceded by a list of contents. The final section (pp. 11-54) contains poetry by Siôn Dafydd Laes (John Davies alias Penllyn), Lewis Owain o Dyddyn y Garreg, Syr Rhys or Drewenn, Gutto Glynn, S[ion] Tud[ur], D. Gwilym [Dafydd ap Gwilym], Griffith Philyp 'o Ardudwy y' Meirion', Daf[y]dd Thomas alias Daf[y]dd Ddu or Eryri, Ieuan Deulwyn 'o blwyf Pendeulwyn Gerllaw Cydweli Caerfyrddin', Lewis Glyn cothi, Thomas Prys P[la]s Iolyn, Tomas Derllys 'am a wn i' and Rhys Ednyfed, followed by a sketch of a ship ('Debora'), verses entitled 'Brynau [sic] Iwerddon', etc. and 'Sylwiadau ar Wneuthyriad Dyn'.
