A volume containing transcripts of Welsh verse in strict metre (consisting mainly of 'cywyddau') transcribed, October [18]89 - February [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes] [newspaper proprietor and publisher]. Many of the poems are annotated to indicate that they were copied out of a volume in the possession of 'W.J.' of Llangollen, and the whole work appears to be an incomplete transcript of NLW MS 670D, which itself consists of a collection of Welsh poems transcribed by William Jones ('Bleddyn'), antiquary, local historian, etc., of Llangollen. The poets whose work is represented include Gwerfil Mechain, Howel Dafi alias Hywel ap Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Rys (Bardd Raglan), Sion ap Phelppot, Robert ap Dafydd Llwyd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (o Fathafarn), John ap Howel ap Tudur, Huw Cae Llwyd, Lewys Daron, Bedo Brwynllys, ? A note on p. 123 indicates that three 'englynion' by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', which were to be found at this point in W[illiam] J[ones]'s volume [NLW MS 670D], had not been copied by the transcriber, as he intended including them in a proposed new edition of that poet's works, to be published by him in 1889. A second note on the same page indicates that, similarly, fourteen 'cywyddau' by Tudur Aled had not been transcribed in the present volume, but had been copied into another book, with the intention of publishing these and other poems by the same bard, together with poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur. In fact, fourteen 'cywyddau' and four other poems by Tudur Aled, and all of the poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur, which appear in NLW MS 670D, have been omitted from the present volume, the presence of poems by the two latter bards in NLW MS 670D being usually indicated by the transcriber by quoting the title, or title and first line, of such works. A note on p. 153 states that eighty ' cywyddau' by Dafydd ap Gwilym [which appeared in William Jones's book, i.e ., NLW MS 670D, pp. 149-263], had been used to correct the published edition of that poet's work ('Yma daw LXXX Cywydd o waith Dafydd ab Gwilym, y rhai a ddefnyddiwyd i gywiro ei waith argraffedig'). These eighty poems, and also five retaliatory poems composed by Gruffydd Grug, in a poetic contention with Dafydd ap Gwilym, and found interspersed among the eighty 'cywyddau', have been omitted from the present volume. A further note on p. 264 states that the last three 'cywyddau' [in NLW MS 670D] had not been copied, as the transcriber believed the text to be so corrupt, that they did not merit transcription. A fly-leaf is marked 'Bk i', and this possibly connects the volume with NLW MS 19313, which, marked on a fly-leaf 'Bk ii', consists of a similar volume of Welsh verse transcribed, March - April [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes], again, by inference, from a book in the possession of W[illiam] J[ones].

An 'awdl' entitled 'Cariad at ein Gwlad, ei Sefydliadau a'i Llenyddiaeth' by 'Ieuan Brechfa' (?James Jones).

A miscellany of prose and verse lettered 'Pigion' but known as 'Y Gell Gymysg', most of it in the hand of Thomas Evans ('Tomos Glyn Cothi'), minister, poet and author, but with 'Trioedd yr Offeiriad', on pp. 209-14, by and in the autograph of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'). Also included are poems by Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, William Moses ('neu Gwilim Tew, o Glyn Tâf'), Howel Prichard, Edward Evans, Ton Coch, Lewis Hopkin, William Harr[i], Llwyn-onn, William Davies (alias 'Wm. Dafydd Abercwmyfuwch, Gerllaw Pen y bont ar ogwr'), David Davis, Castell Hywel, Lewis Williams ('y Bardd Bach'), Jonathan Hughes, Huw Mor[y]s, Huw Gruffydd ('Gynt o Lwyn y brain Meirionydd'), John Jenkins ('Sion y Bardd bach Aberteifi'), Rees John, 'Weaver', John Howels, J. Morgans, James Davies ('Iago ap Dewi'), F[fowc] Prys, etc. Daniel Lleufer Thomas has inserted a comprehensive note relating to 'Tomos Glyn Cothi' and to the contents at the beginning of the volume. 'Tomos Glyn Cothi' has included in the volume several transcripts from contemporary journals.

'Can ar Hawddfyd - testyn yn Eisteddfod y Maen chwyf [Pontypridd] yn y fl. 1827 ...' by Thomas Williams ('Gwilym Morganwg') and 'Awdl Er cofadwriaeth am y teilwng Fardd Gwilym Morganwg' [? by William Jones ('Gwilym ab Ioan')].

Three letters, 1822, 1824, and undated [1820], from John and Mary Roberts, Diosg [Llanbryn-mair], i.e. the Reverend John Roberts and his wife, Mary, to his brother, the Reverend George Roberts, Ebensburg, and his wife, Jane, with a note also to Rees Morgan. The subjects mentioned (in chronological order rather than order of binding) include [1820], the death of Richard Williams, Weeg, [Llanbryn-mair], and of [Thomas Edwards, Llanerfyl], John Roberts's answer to a book by Thomas Jones of Denbigh, and two bequests by [Thomas Edwards], one for the purpose of building a chapel in Nant-yr-eira; 1822, their feelings on seeing John Evans, together with the articles and letters he brought from the addressees, Tommy's future, an assembly at Blaenycoed near Carmarthen, where the writer preached to a vast audience, and the friendly behaviour towards him of the minister there, Mr. Jones of Trelech; and 1824, payment to Griffith Rowland of money for William Tibbot and George Roberts, affairs at Llan-uwchllyn (Michael Jones), appointments made at the [Newtown] Academy, the cause at Nantyreira, Samuel [Roberts]'s progress, and stanzas of verse by him transcribed from Y Dysgedydd, September 1823.

Among other poets represented are John Jones ('Talhaiarn'); John Blackwell ('Alun'); Roger Edwards, Mold; Robert Parry ('Robin Ddu Eryri'); Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'), etc. There is also (a) a cutting, from Yr Herald Cymraeg, of a letter, 26 March 1859, from Evan James ('Ieuan ap Iago'), Pontypridd, enclosing a copy of his 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau', the first song to be sung to the tune 'Glan Rhondda', composed by his son James James, Harp Inn, Pontypridd; (b) a photograph of Owen Wynne Jones ('Glasynys'); and (c) a transcript of a 'Carol Nadolig', with comments by S[idney] A[urelius] J[ones], Ynys, St. Asaph. The items are mounted in a volume of Kearsley's Gentleman's and Tradesman's Pocket Ledger, 1844, containing some manuscript entries.

A bound volume labelled 'Eisteddfod Proceddings', compiled by William Jenkins Rees (1772-1855), rector of Cascob, Radnorshire, and consisting largely of printed notices addressed to him by Cambrian Societies in Wales and in London. The contents include a notice of an eisteddfod under the auspices of the Gwyneddigion Society at Caerwys, 1798, together with Gosodaethau a Rheolau Cymdeithas y Gwyneddigion and other material relating to the Society; a draft consitution of the Cambrian Society in the hand of W. J. Rees [1818]; resolutions and accounts of the Cambrian Society in Dyfed, 1818-20 and undated; programmes of concerts at the Town Hall, Carmarthen, by the Royal Bath Harmonic Society, 1819-20; a programme of an eisteddfod to be held at Carmarthen in 1823, together with manuscript addresses delivered by Thomas Price ('Carnhuanawc') and [Daniel Evans ('Daniel Ddu o Geredigion'); resolutions of the Cambrian Society in Gwent, 1821-2; material relating to eisteddfodau and concerts held at Brecon, 1822 and 1826; resolutions of the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys, 1819-24; announcements of eisteddfodau to be held at Wrexham, 1820, and Welshpool, 1824; a holograph letter from Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') to W.
