Letters and miscellaneous papers comprising two letters [+], 1693, from Ch[arles] Owen, Oswestree to the Lady Archer near Epping in Essex (acknowledging all the expressions of her ladyship's extraordinary favours to him, mentioning that after a tedious ramble and censorious suspicions he came home in safety, the liberality of friends, 'Yet all this will not do for a Compensation for the injury done me', he desired his brother to assist Mr (?) Durrant in adjusting those wretched differences at Epping - her Ladyship's honourable attempts towards it); seven letters [+] from T[homas] Burgess, successively bishop of St Davids and of Salisbury, one written from C[orpus] C[hristi] C[ollege], Oxford, 1787, to T[homas] Falconer, Esq'r, Chester (thanking him for the present of his little book, requesting the addressee's opinion on the meaning of a passage from the Gospels and quoting from the preface to a second edition of the [Salisbury] spelling-book), two, possibly three, written from Abergwilly Palace and London, 1813-14, to the Reverend T. W. [recte T. Davies headed 'Myrddin MSS (1) Eben Fardd'; and a bundle of miscellaneous papers [#] including 'Eifionydd', a holograph poem in Welsh by E[benezer] Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), Clynnog, 22 July 1829; 'Myfyrdawd y Bardd am ei gariad pan oedd hi yn mordwo o Ynys Fôn i Fanaw' by Rhobt Huws ('Rhobin ddu o Fôn'); one or two items probably in the autograph of the Reverend Peter Bailey Williams (English verse, a draft of a letter [to the editors of the Welsh Magazine], etc.), 'An Infentory of Coods & Cattells of Mr Morgan ap Ragnard ap Maddocke of te County of Clamorganshire shentilman ...', endorsed 'The Welch Inventory', and miscellaneous documents, 1588-1767, including a bond, 1588, relating to properties within the township of Llanvair in the commot of Iscor', Caernarfonshire, a citation, 1652, relating to the administration of the goods of Richard Thomas [? of Talgarth, Breconshire], a grant, 1734, relating to Bryn y Fedwen estate in the parish of Llanrug, Caernarfonshire, and a return, 1767, by Edward Watkins, curate, certifying that there are no Papists within his parish of Llangaffo or Llangeinwen, Anglesey. The items marked + were formerly Phillipps MS 35051 (see letter dated 9 February 1973 from Dr A. N. L. Munby to the Keeper of Manuscripts, National Library of Wales). # - The wrapping paper has on it 'Phillipps MSS 34929' in pencil in the autograph of J. H. Davies but, with the exception of the 'inventory of goods', the contents of this package do not appear to correspond to the description of Phillipps MS 34929 as given by Dr Munby in his letter, although Phillipps MS 34929 was purchased by J. H. Davies.

A composite volume in several hands containing letters from Edward Roberts ('Ior[werth] Glan Aled'), Rhyl, to [Ebenezer Thomas 'Eben Fardd'], 1858 (copy of writer's note to [John Williams], 'Ioan Madog' concerning 'englynion' to 'Eben Fardd', Llangollen Eisteddfod, condolence), and from Richard Jones ('Gwyndaf Eryri') Caernarfon, to Ebenezer Thomas ['Eben Fardd'], Llangybi, 1827 (the loan of a volume of poetry, a request for an English translation of a short ode ('odlig') to Lord Newborough), 'awdlau', 'cywyddau', and 'englynion', partly autograph, by Mathew Owen (Llangar) ('Ac a Goppiwyd Rhagfyr 11 1812 Gan Robert Robert Maccwy Môn Ar frys'), Sion Kain (1643), John Rhydderch, Richard Lloyd, William Phylip, Morys ab I'an ab Einion [Morys Dwyfech], Davydd ap Gwilim, John Owenes (1675/6), Iolo Goch, Dav[id] Thomas ('D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri'), Robert Davies ('o Nantglyn'), Sion Philip, Humphrey David ap Evan (1644), Griffith Hiriaethog, and Griffudd ap Ifan ap Llywelyn Vychan, and anonymous poems; poems in free metres by John Prichard and 'Uthr Ben Dragon' (1815) and an anonymous carol; etc. Much of the later section of the volume, c. 1808, is in the hand of John Williams. Portions of three documents, apparently parts of the previous binding, have been preserved at the end of the volume (pp. 99-100): they include part of a naval account of payments to shipwrights, watermen, etc., c. 1620; part of an award [temp. Elizabeth] by Thomas ap Richard of Bwlch y Beydu, Denbighshire, gent., in a dispute between David ap Rees ap gruffith lloyd of Llanrwst, yeo[man], William ap Rees ap gruff lloyd of Scrogennan, and Low[ ] ... widow, mother of the said William, relating to messuages and lands in Llanddoged and Gwytherin, late of Rees ap gruff lloyd deceased; a lease for life, temp. Elizabeth, from Richard lloid of Sweney, Salop, gent., to Richard Burley of the same, yeo[man], of mays yr hen westyn in Sweney.

Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'.
