Research and original papers acquired by D. Rhys Phillips, mainly towards a history of the vale of Neath, 1622-1897, including extracts from the letter-books of Alfred Fox of the Neath Abbey Coal Co., 1820-1858, and accounts of the Vale of Neath Railway, 1850-1862; and material towards a history of Swansea, 1622-1814. Papers relating to Nonconformity, 1657-1921, music and hymn books, 1820-1933, Neath Abbey Coal Co., 1865-1874, dialect words, place names, tribannau Morgannwg, poetry, proverbs and folklore, 1896-1948. The letters, 1900-1925, concern books, publishing, printing and librarianship matters. Many of the letters relate to the publication of J. H. Davies's Bibliography of Welsh Ballads. Some concern the affairs of the Welsh Bibliographical Society or the Carmarthen Antiquarian Society, and some derive from D. Rhys Phillips's work as Welsh Librarian at Swansea.

Some thirty-one letters, 1890-1926, to J. H. Davies, both personal and professional, from various correspondents including R. D. Roberts, 1902 (enclosing a letter, 31 December 1828, from David Davies, Bristol, to his aunt, Miss Jane Davies, Machynlleth), [Sir] J[ohn] W[illiams], 1904, [Sir] John Morris-Jones, 1918, 1922, D. Rhys Phillips, 1919 (2), the Rev. J. Bodvan Anwyl, 1922, and Daniel Protheroe, 1926. Also included are four carbon copy letters from J. H. Davies, 1925-1926.
