Research notes on medieval Wales

Manuscript, typescript and photocopied notes on the history, society, culture and geography of Wales and the marches in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and associated aspects of English history, made and collected by Sharon Penman and relating particularly to matters relevant to Sharon Penman's Welsh princes trilogy including politics (local, national and international), governance, court officers, law and order, customs, marriage, divorce, inheritance, religion, economy, agriculture, social bonds, dynastic and familial relationships, warfare, military architecture, travel, weather, wildlife, folklore, language, proverbs, personal names, entertainment and heraldry; also included are a bibliography compiled by Sharon Penman and an empty but illustrated printed folder produced for schools by Gwynedd County Council, [1994], relating to the princes of Gwynedd.

Research and writing notes

Notes made and accumulated by Sharon Penman during the writing of the Welsh princes trilogy, including historical notes as well as structural outlines of individual novels and details (both historical and imaginative) relating to her portrayal of particular characters, themes, events and places; the notes are heavily based on published editions of primary sources and secondary academic and popular publications from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries up to the 1980s.

Incomplete typescript of the third draft of 'Here be Dragons' by Sharon Penman, comprising part of chapter 35 and the whole of chapters 1-34 and 36-41 of Book One and chapters 1-17 of Book Two, with manuscript amendments to the text and manuscript re-drafting by Sharon Penman. There is more than one typescript version of some pages, and in a few cases the entire text has been changed.

Reviews, interviews, articles and correspondence relating to Sharon Penman and her novels, especially Here be Dragons, including: press cuttings, typescript press copies, agency press cuttings and photocopies of reviews published in the USA and the UK, 1985-1986, of Here be Dragons, including a few manuscript notes by reviewers and publishers; press cuttings of interviews with Sharon Penman in Publishers Weekly (1985) and Fiction Writers Monthly (1986), referring in particular to Here be Dragons; typescript copies and press cuttings of articles written by Fred Allen for publication in several Kentucky newspapers about Sharon Penman's personal and family history, Here be Dragons, her first novel The Sunne in Splendour, and her connections with Kentucky, with manuscript annotations by Allen added for the attention of Sharon Penman; a copy of New Welsh Review, 1992, containing an article by J. H. Cook about Sharon Penman, her Welsh trilogy and medieval Wales; letters to Sharon Penman from her agents and publishers, 1985-1986, relating to her writing, her research, her collaboration with agents and publishers, the marketing and publication of Here be Dragons, royalties for Here be Dragons and the offer of a contract for two further novels including [Falls the] Shadow [and The Reckoning]; a typescript copy of a letter, 1985, by Sharon Penman to the University of Wales Press asking for a subscription to the Welsh History Review; a card, 2021, from [a family member] concerning help received in disposing of Sharon Penman's work and possessions after her death, and in particular the transfer of the Welsh trilogy to its new home [at NLW]; and also two copies of Ninnau, 1985, accumulated by Sharon Penman and her publishers in connection with material relating to her and intended for publication in the paper (but not present in these copies - they included a letter by her, a review of Here be Dragons and an advertisement for the book), with a manuscript note from the publishers.

Writing notes for 'Here be Dragons'

Manuscript notes by Sharon Penman outlining the historical chronology of 'Here be Dragons' (referred to here as 'Book II' because it was her second novel) and its effect upon the broad narrative structure of the book, as well as the physical structure of the text. Also included is a photocopy of the notes made before they were completed.

Research notes on 'Falls the Shadow'

Manuscript notes by Sharon Penman, and also a number of photocopies, taken from primary sources and academic historical works relating to the detailed historical background of 'Falls the Shadow', together with Penman's own imaginative interpretations (generally within the parameters of the historical evidence), with particular reference to individual characters, events, themes and places that appear in the novel.

Complete typescript of the third draft of 'Falls the Shadow' by Sharon Penman, comprising the preliminary leaves, the Prologue, chapters 1-42 and the end leaves, with manuscript annotations and amendments by the editor relating to both text and typesetting as well as manuscript annotations, amendments and re-drafting of the text by Sharon Penman.

Papers relating to book covers, including proof copies, mock-ups, artwork and publishers' promotional literature (including some related manuscript notes by publishers) produced in connection with the publication of several print runs of Here be Dragons, Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning in both the USA and the UK, together with associated photocopies accumulated by Sharon Penman, a child's drawing inspired by The Reckoning, and a letter to Sharon Penman from the editor of the 2000 UK edition of Here be Dragons concerning the images used on the cover.

Papers relating to published works by Sharon Penman other than the Welsh princes trilogy. Wales features significantly in these novels, although the focus is on England and France.
