Typescripts of speeches given by Gordon Macdonald during his term as Governor of Newfoundland comprising speeches given at the unveiling of the Pouch Cove war memorial, University College, Signal Hill, the Agricultural and Industrial Fair at Harbour Grace, the Bible Society, Wesley Church, Cochrane Street war memorial, a nurses' graduation ceremony and his new year message along with an extract from The Times weekly edition.

Typescript of a radio address by the UK Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, broadcast on the radio to the people of Newfoundland on 28 March 1949, on the eve of confederation with Canada. The typescript was sent to Gordon Macdonald before the broadcast.

File comprises a memorandum submitted by the Newfoundland delegation to Ottawa , dated October1948 and marked “Top Secret” on the cover which is a detailed statement on Newfoundland government finances and estimates for income and expenditure for the 6 years following union with Canada.

File comprises a copy of report by the Responsible Government League of Newfoundland to the Conference on Commonwealth Prime Ministers in London in 1949 and associated correspondence with Philip Noel Baker, Commonwealth Relations Office and the Commission of Government objecting to confederation and the conduct of the referendum which endorsed confederation with Canada.

File comprises documents relating to speaking and campaigning engagements for the 1950 General Election, including travel plans, names of candidates for the constituencies of Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Brierly Hill, Wolverhamption, Wrekin and Ludlow, facts about constituencies including vote shares, related correspondence including dealing with fuel rationing and a thank you letter from Jim Simmons who won Brierly Hill.

Labour Summer School in Abertillery

Documents relating to Gordon MacDonald's speech to the Labour Party Summer School in Abertillery on 17 February 1951, a speech given at a Labour Party conference in Abertillery and a Public meeting at Monmouth on 19 February 1951 along with travel arrangements. The topic of the 17 February speech was foreign affairs and the notes contain thought on Germany, the Soviet Union, the United Nations, Chinas and a printed copy of a speech given on 11 January 1951 at Chatham House by Kenneth Younger, Minister of State which is marked "Restricted". The file also includes a speech given by Gordon MacDonald at Blaina, Monmouthshire om 18 February 1951 on the United Nations and Peace. The Labour MP for Abertillery was Llywelyn Williams, MacDonald's son in law.

The Sydney Conference

Correspondence and ephemera related to the Sydney Conference in 1950 including letters and telegrams, a menu from a dinner at which Macdonald was the guest of honour, notes for a speech, possibly given at that dinner as well as material related to a television programme featuring MacDonald and letters from churches and Welsh societies in Australia
