Newfoundland Railway

File comprises a typed document, entitled "Newfoundland A Memorandum by A. P. Herbert Esq MP", one of the members of the Parliamentary Goodwill Mission which visited Newfoundland in 1942. It contains his observations on the economy, education, religion, industry, taxation as well as options for the governance of the dominion. He includes an option for Newfoundland to become part of the United Kingdom but with home rule. He observes that this would be similar to the status of Northern Ireland but warns against making this comparison in public.

File comprises a memorandum submitted by the Newfoundland delegation to Ottawa , dated October1948 and marked “Top Secret” on the cover which is a detailed statement on Newfoundland government finances and estimates for income and expenditure for the 6 years following union with Canada.

Documents relating to Gordon MacDonald's speech to the Labour Party Summer School in Abertillery on 17 February 1951, a speech given at a Labour Party conference in Abertillery and a Public meeting at Monmouth on 19 February 1951 along with travel arrangements. The topic of the 17 February speech was foreign affairs and the notes contain thought on Germany, the Soviet Union, the United Nations, Chinas and a printed copy of a speech given on 11 January 1951 at Chatham House by Kenneth Younger, Minister of State which is marked "Restricted". The file also includes a speech given by Gordon MacDonald at Blaina, Monmouthshire om 18 February 1951 on the United Nations and Peace. The Labour MP for Abertillery was Llywelyn Williams, MacDonald's son in law.
