British Antiquities Revived

A draft tract entitled 'Proofes drawne from authorities and other reasons why Cadelh prince of Southwales was the eldest sonne of Roderic the greate (kinge of Wales) and that he and his issue after him had a superioritie over the rest of Wales and his two bretheren and the descendantes from them' by, and in the autograph of, Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt. The substance of this tract was subsequently incorporated in Vaughan's British Antiquities Revived (Oxford, 1662). The volume contains both the arguments and answers set forth by Vaughan and therefore differs considerably from Peniarth MS 277 which contains only the arguments.
Pasted inside the front cover is a short description of the volume in the form of a cutting from Messrs. Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge’s Sale Catalogue of the Mostyn Library (1919), p. 22.

Vaughan, Robert, 1592-1667

Sermons,

A collection of twenty-one sermons by, and in the autograph of, the Rev. Micah Thomas, first Principal of the Abergavenny Baptist Academy. These sermons were written in 1817-1819 and were delivered by him at Abergavenny during that period and also in 1842-1851. Loosely inserted in the volume is another autograph sermon which he delivered at Abergavenny on Sept 26, 1819. Paper; 178 ff., unnumbered; 164x103; diced sheepskin.

Commonplace book,

Commonplace book mainly containing proverbs and original and transcribed sermons in English, Latin and Greek. The following inscription appears on the fly-leaf:-'M ... Edwardi Warreni de Wormington in Comit Gloucestrio Anno Doni 1664 Anno Etatis 23'. A short description of the volume, in the form of a cutting from a sale catalogue, is loosely inserted. According to this description, the author appears to have been a Puritan of the Cromwellian period. A note, however, in the margin of this cutting [by Albert Addams-Williams] refutes this suggestion on the ground that the volume contains a sermon based on the martyrdom of Charles I. Paper; 252 pp., unnumbered; 142 x 89;; tooled calf.

Alphabet of arms,

Volume lettered 'Chandless Alphabet of Arms', containing the arms of the gentry of Yorkshire, Shropshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Merionethshire and Montgomeryshire; pencil, pen-and-ink, and coloured reproductions of some coats of arms; and miscellaneous verses including a long poem entitled 'Memorials of Mortalities'. This volume was formerly Phillipps MS. 11201. Paper; 37 ff., unnumbered; 171x 114; full calf with gilt tooling.

The Gift of Tongues,

Autograph manuscript of 'The Gift of Tongues' by Arthur Machen, which was presented by the author to Major Albert Addams-Williams, Llangibby Castle, together with a proof copy of the same, and a covering letter, 8 December 1927, from the author to Major Addanms-Williams. This tale was published in the Christmas 1927 number of T.P.'s Weekly and describes an extraordinary service conducted by the Rev.Thomas Beynon at Bryn Sion Methodist Church, Treowen, Monmouthshire, on Christmas Day, 1870. Paper; pp. 1-23; 254 x 204.

Journals of tours through Wales,

Composite volumes containing journals of tours through Wales by Sir Richard Colt Hoare. The first volume embraces the Vale of Clwyd, Rhuddlan, St. Asaph, Denbigh, Ruthin, Mold, Holywell, Northop, Flint, Hawarden, Chester, Caergwrle, Wrexham, Wynnstay, Chirk Castle, Oswestry, Montgomery, Knighton, Presteigne, Tintern Abbey, Chepstow, Clifton, and Bristol. The second volume embraces (a) Bristol, Newport, Caldicot, Caerleon, Usk, Raglan, Abergavenny, Llanthony, Crickhowell, Tretower, Brecon, Trecastle, Merthyr, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Tredegar, Newport and Bristol; (b) Newport, Cardiff, Llandaff, Cowbridge, St. Donats, Margam, Aberavon, Briton Ferry, Neath, Swansea, Llanelly, Kidwelly, Carmarthen, Llandilo, Laugharne, Llanstephan, Narberth, Haverfordwest, Newgale, St. Davids, Fishguard, Cardigan, Aberaeron Talybont, Machynlleth, Llanidloes, Newtown, Welshpool and Shrewsbury; (c) Monmouth and Brockway; and (d) Aberystwyth. As far as can be ascertained from internal evidence these tours were undertaken in 1796. A sale catalogue cutting, pasted on the inside front cover of the first volume, states that the work is in the autograph of Sir Richard Colt Hoare. Portions of it, however, are in a different hand. The work has all the appearances of a draft, some paragraphs being deleted and copious additional notes inserted. The volumes have been assembled and bound in a very careless manner, individual folios and even complete sections being misplaced. The work is divided into chapters which have been numbered at a later date. The first volume contains sections XVI-XX, 20, XXII, and the second volume sections XXIII-XXV, 26. These numbers, as well as the existing pagination, suggest that the work is incomplete. Paper; 424 ff., many of which are numbered; 242 x 193; full sheepskin; 2 vols.
