Commonplace book of William Addams-Williams of Llangibby and his sister Mary Addams-Williams,
Part of Llangibby Castle Estate Records.
A commonplace book in the autograph of William Addams-Williams of Llangibby (1727-1806) and of his sister Mary (1720-1778), wife of Kingsmill Evans of Lydart, and others. It contains extracts from the parish register of Monmouth and records of the birth and death of members of the families of Williams and Addams-Williams of Llangibby, Addams of Monmouth, Evans of Lydart, and Herberts of Tyfry; a copy of an address presented to the Queen by the freeholders of Monmouthshire on the occasion of the Act of Union with Scotland, 1707, particulars of the planting and grafting of fruit trees and the felling of timber at Llangibby and elsewhere; forms of legal instruments; and miscellaneous poetry and a large number of medical and culinary recipes collected from the recipe book of Mrs. Willis of Llangibby, contemporary newspapers and other sources. Inserted in the volume are two small early nineteenth century notebooks, the one containing records of the capture of weasels, polecats, stoats, and 'fetchers', and the other containing extracts relating to the rule of Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth, etc. Paper; 302 pp., the first 23 being numbered, and 90 being blank; 235 x 190; full vellum.
Part of Llangibby Castle Estate Records.
Commonplace book mainly containing proverbs and original and transcribed sermons in English, Latin and Greek. The following inscription appears on the fly-leaf:-'M ... Edwardi Warreni de Wormington in Comit Gloucestrio Anno Doni 1664 Anno Etatis 23'. A short description of the volume, in the form of a cutting from a sale catalogue, is loosely inserted. According to this description, the author appears to have been a Puritan of the Cromwellian period. A note, however, in the margin of this cutting [by Albert Addams-Williams] refutes this suggestion on the ground that the volume contains a sermon based on the martyrdom of Charles I. Paper; 252 pp., unnumbered; 142 x 89;; tooled calf.
