Eight notebooks in the hand of Douglas Houston, 1982-2012, containing drafts of poetry and incomplete notes on literary subjects, including Houston's own compositions and matters relating to his reviewing and editing work, as well as notes towards adaptations of work by others, and sketches and notes on domestic matters; together with a bundle of verse correspondence between Houston and Seán O'Brien, comprising 'The idiocy of rural life' by O'Brien and Houston's reply entitled 'Counsel for the rusticated'; and a bundle of letters from Houston to Wayne Burrows, 1990-2000, relating to their literary work and that of their friends and associates, as well as personal matters, and including a copy of an unpublished travel memoir by Houston entitled 'Le Camping sauvage', 1990, a copy of a review of several Anglo-Welsh authors by Houston, 1990, and copies of poems by him, mostly unpublished with notes dated 2012, but also including some that were published in The hunters in the snow (Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1994) and The Welsh book of the dead (Seren, 2000).

Twenty-two notebooks used as work books and diaries including drafts of Douglas Houston's poems later published in With the offal eaters (Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1986) (nos 1-9) and The hunters in the snow (Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1994) (nos 10-14); notes relating to his doctoral thesis 'Myths of place: the importance of landscapes in the poetries of W.H. Auden & Seamus Heaney' (Hull, 1986) (nos 15-16); and others (nos 17-22), including diary entries for 1984 (no. 17), 1986 (no. 18) and 1992 (nos 19-20).
