Archaeological research papers

The group contains papers relating to a wide range of Derrick Webley's interests in archaeological research, and consists mainly of material accumulated in preparation for his article on the palaeolithic geography of sites at Klithi, Asprochaliko and Kastritsa in the Epirus region of Greece. The article was published as Sturdy, Derek, Webley, Derrick and Bailey, Geoff, 'The palaeolithic geography of Epirus' in Bailey, G. N. (ed.) Contemporary painters, architects and travellers: notes

The file contains typescript notes, 1994, on British painters and architects in Italy, together with copies of letters and diaries of British travellers in Europe, especially Italy, all relating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Also included is a typescript catalogue, compiled by Derrick Webley, of watercolours by Moses Griffith (1747-1819) depicting scenes throughout Great Britain, and sale catalogues of works by the artists Enrico Coleman (1846-1911) and Francesco Zerilli (1793-1837).

The fonds consists of the research papers of Derrick Pritchard Webley, mainly relating to his work on the artist Penry Williams. The papers include correspondence, notes and typescript transcripts of letters relating to Williams, his works, his contemporaries and his cultural background, together with catalogues of works by Williams and other artists, and typescript drafts of chapters of Webley's posthumous work Cast to the winds: the life and work of Penry Williams (1802-1885) (Aberystwyth: National Library of Wales, 1997). Also included are papers relating to Derrick Webley's archaeological interests, in particular the palaeolithic geography of the Epirus region of Greece.

The file contains notes and especially letters, 1989-1992, to Derrick Webley relating to many aspects of Penry Williams's life and in particular the location and identification of his paintings. There is also some material concerning British artists and travellers in Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The file contains notes and correspondence, 1989, relating to Derrick Webley's work in identifying, locating and cataloguing pictures by Penry Williams and Moses Griffith (1747-1819), together with biographical notes by Webley concerning Penry Williams and miscellaneous notes relating to other eighteenth and nineteenth-century British artists.
