Bellomo: portrait of a war criminal

The file contains material relating to the trial of General Nicola Bellomo by the British War Crimes Commission in July 1945, during which Maurice James acted as the official interpreter. The papers include various drafts of the essay 'Portrait of a War Criminal', evidently written later during Maurice James's time at Huddersfield College, [1948x1957], as well as contemporary letters, notes and newspaper cuttings, 1945. The trial was significant for being the first of its kind.

The file consists of two exercise books containing lesson plans for teaching various subjects.

The series consists of letters written by and to Maurice James, numerous testimonials from teachers and lecturers and various postcards and newspaper cuttings, 1938-1962. The correspondence is mainly with his family, college friends and army friends during the War, and with friends in Huddersfield.

The file contains seventy-nine letters and other items, of which forty-nine are dated, 1939-1962. Included are letters to and from friends, colleagues and family, many of which date from the period of the Second World War. Maurice James writes from the Isle of Man and Bari, Italy, as well as from various places in Wales and England. There are also job applications and blank postcards.

Literary works

The series contains a variety of poetry and prose works composed at various times during Maurice James's lifetime.

MA thesis

The file contains various drafts of, and notes for, Maurice James's unfinished MA thesis 'Ancients and Modern: The Development of Historical Criticism in the Eighteenth Century', 1939-1940, 1947-1948, together with a few letters relating to this work.
