Coal industry,

Miscellaneous papers accumulated by Philip Weekes relating to the coal industry in south Wales, including a few letters relating to his studies at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and the Universal Mining School at Cardiff, the Tredegar Workmen's Institute Society, his work for the Ministry of Fuel and Power, and a BBC television programme on the miner to which Mr Weekes contributed in 1961.

A number of historical documents, 1849-1980, acquired by Philip Weekes relating to mining and the South Wales Coalfield, consisting of a single title deed, 1860; several printed documents, 1885-1980; and some copy documents, [?1970x?1999], the originals of which date between 1849-1976.

College notebooks,

Five notebooks (and some loose notes) containing notes taken by Philip Weekes while a student at the Mining Department of University College, Cardiff, during the years of World War Two. They include notes on mine ventilation and mining, coal production, dust and disease, roof control, the problems of mechanical coal-mining, cleavage induced by mining, roof movements, machine mining, planning at the coal face, and planning and constructing mine roadways.

Copies of printed and typescript documents, Nov. 1849-Jan. 1976, acquired by Philip Weekes and relating to South Wales and mining, including a transcript of a 'Report of Dyffryn and New Duffryn Collieries, November, 1849'; and photocopies of the 'Superintendent's Report on the Senghennydd accident', and of a brief report from The Monmouthshire Collieries Rescue Association concerning equipment used, men present and hours worked during the disaster of 1913.

Cuttings of Prince Charles' visit,

Newspaper cuttings, May 1974, concerning the visit of HRH The Prince of Wales to St John's Colliery at Maesteg on 24 May 1974. Mainly consisting of cuttings giving a brief account of the Prince's visit as reported in both the national and local press at the time.

Cuttings on the Aberfan disaster,

The file comprises various newspaper and magazine cuttings, [Oct.] 1966-Dec. 1967, some in photocopied form, concerning the disaster at Aberfan on 21 October 1966, including cuttings regarding the subsequent public inquiry at Merthyr Tydfil, as reported in both the national and local press, as well as articles from the Colliery Guardian. Also included are some pages from a glossy magazine showing pictures of the scene immediately following the tragedy.

Desk diary,

Contains entries for some days comprising detailed observations and comments on the course of Welsh and British political and industrial life, especially relating to the problems besetting the coal industry. Many of the observations concern the National Union of Mineworkers and the impending closure of coal mines within south Wales. There are also some personal references and allusions.

Diaries,

Comprises a desk diary for 1979 kept intermittently by Philip Weekes with full details of his professional activities and engagements, mainly in the service of the National Coal Board. A few of the pages have been ripped out of the diary. There is also a large National Coal Board memorandum book bearing full intermittent entries by Philip Weekes for the period January 1981 until June 1985 relating mainly to his work for the National Coal Board and covering the period during the build-up to the 1984-85 miners' strike and its early months. The diary also contains stray manuscript notes, typescript memoranda, and cuttings from newspapers and journals. There is also a bound photocopy of the same diary for 1981-1985 and the additional material.

Exercise book and notebooks,

An exercise book (33 ff. of text), 1940, entitled 'Sinking' and marked 'Mining Department Cardiff University', containing extensive handwritten notes and sketches, presumably made during Philip Weekes' undergraduate course in mining engineering. A notebook (93 ff. of text), 1939-1949, containing handwritten notes made during his early career on operations at Pochin Colliery, July 1942-April 1943, together with a list showing time spent at various collieries and work done, July 1939-April 1943; as well as extensive notes apparently taken on a visit to German collieries, Jan.-Feb. 1949. A second notebook (39 ff. of text), 1966, containing rough notes apparently taken on a visit to the United States of America, Sept.-Oct. 1966.
