Notes, pamphlets, letters, periodicals, poems, photographs, short stories, lectures, information packs, publicity material and travel ephemera collected by Jan Morris in the course of research for her published works of non-fiction and fiction, including material relating to the British empire (especially in Africa and India), the Yakima Indian Reservation (Washington State), Canada (including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Victoria [British Columbia]), the Great Famine in Northern Ireland, Hitler's ideas about the British empire, the Gallipoli landings, the battle of Magersfontein (Orange Free State), Oxford University (including the Senior Common Room at University College and the Arts Festival), Venice, Trieste, gender roles, Welsh genealogy, an obituary for David W. Printed material,

The series comprises printed travel literature, including maps and plans, collected by Jan Morris on her numerous trips throughout Britain and around the world, and used by her as research when compiling her various publications.

'Pre Pax',

The file comprises Jan Morris's notes on the extent and influence of the British Empire in relation to various other countries. Many of the books have notes on various individuals who were influential in the colonisation of many of the countries. A list of the countries visited between 1965 and 1970, during the course of her research, may be found in notebook 1/4(xi). Many of the notebooks contain sketches of buildings and landmarks found in many of the countries, and all the notebooks contain a bibilography and a list of the countries visited whilst conducting her research.

'Post Pax',

The file comprises notebooks containing research notes relating to the publication of Pax Britannica. Many of the notebooks contain sketches of scenes of various landmarks and buildings visited by Jan Morris whilst compiling her notes on different countries.

Personal papers of Jan Morris, including letters and postcards to her from publishers, editors, agents, reviewers, translators and other figures in the literary world, as well as academics, officials, friends, family and admirers, and also including some letters to associates of Jan Morris, concerning many aspects of her books and articles and the issues raised by them (sometimes many years after the work was first published), including invitations and requests, as well as her writing career in general and her intellectual, political, social, personal and domestic life, together with reviews of her work, official records, and press cuttings.

The file comprises notebooks used by Jan Morris in her research towards compiling the first chapter of her trilogy relating to the British Empire.
