Personal papers

The series comprises papers relating to Thomas Jones's personal life, including letters which were sent to him on the occasion of his retirement, 1970, and obituaries, which followed his death in 1972. Also included are newspaper cuttings, which were accumulated by Thomas Jones.

The folder includes Thomas Jones's reports from Ystalyfera school, 1922-1928; receipts for royalties paid to him, 1939-1948; publication contracts, 1939 and 1944; medical prescriptions, 1941-1943; two letters in French, 1954 and 1958; circular correspondence from, and minutes of meetings of, the National Library of Wales, 1961-1962; a report on his pension provision, 1970; letters, 1970, wishing him well on his retirement, and copies of his obituaries, 1972.

'Gair yn ei le'

The series comprises correspondence and notes regarding Thomas Jones's contribution to the programme which investigated the etymology of obscure dialect terms. The programme `Gair yn ei le' was broadcast in five Welsh counties by the BBC between 1952 and 1953.

Papers relating to Thomas Jones's career

The group comprises papers and correspondence relating to appointments in the higher education sector and awards held by Thomas Jones, 1932-1971, and to appointments in which he was involved, 1953-1972, together with papers relating to his administrative and teaching roles within the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1943-1971.

Arthurian legend

The file comprises notes relating to Arthurian legend, including the Holy Grail, Culhwch ac Olwain, and Peredur and Perceval. Also included is a transcript of Ystoryaeu Seint Greal. Rhan 1, Y Keis, the text of which is from Peniarth 11, NLW 3063E and Peniarth 15. Thomas Jones died before completing the editing of this work, and it was published after his death by The University of Wales Press in 1992.

Elis Gruffydd

The file comprises notes on Elis Gruffydd, c. 1490-1552, copyist, chronicler and translator, who accompanied Sir Robert Wingfield at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, near Calais in 1520.
