World War II: conscientious objector

The file comprises papers, 1940-1942, relating to Glyn Jones's case as a conscientious objector during World War II, including a formal application to the Local Tribunal, certificate of registration in the Register of Conscientious Objectors, and notes by Glyn Jones of replies to questions regarding his objections. Also included is related correspondence, 1942, mostly rejections to applications for numerous teaching posts, including draft letters by Glyn Jones and a list of schools to which he applied for work; and newspaper cuttings, 1942, regarding the controversy surrounding the appointment of a conscientious objector [Glyn Jones] as a teacher at Oldcastle School, Bridgend.

Notebooks

The file comprises notebooks, 1926x[1995], containing various notes in the hand of Glyn Jones. Included are notes taken during lectures and classes which he attended; Welsh grammar, vocabulary and translations; journals containing various observations and jottings (some of which may have been used for stories); plots, notes and drafts of mostly stories; recollections of Anglo-Welsh writers; notes pertaining to Anglo-Welsh writers; and notes concerning English literature.

The file comprises papers, 1814-[1995] (with gaps), pertaining to various family members, mostly Glyn Jones's parents, William Henry and Margaret Jones, and his grandfather, Morgan H. Williams ('Morgan Glan Taf'). The papers include certificates of births, marriages and deaths, 1814-1966 (with gaps), letters from Morgan and Margaret Williams, Pennsylvania, 1882-1895 (with gaps), and drafts of family trees by Glyn Jones, [1966x1995].

The file includes manuscript and typescript copies of poems by John Ormond, 1969x1975, which appear to have been presented as gifts to Glyn Jones; copies of the script, 'Laughter before nightfall (or The man who rubbed the rainbow)', presented by Yr Academi Gymreig; a tribute to Graham Sutherland by John Ormond, 1980; press cuttings of obituaries of John Ormond, 1990, and copies of tributes by Glyn Jones and Dai Smith, 1990.

The file includes drafts, 1976, of the poem by John Tripp, 'Poet in the village', on the occasion of the publication of Selected poems, and a copy of the script of the play 'It's not by his beak you judge a woodcock', 1972, adapted by John Tripp from the short story by Glyn Jones; typescript copies of poems by Roland Mathias, [1944x1980], some of which contain manuscript amendments; and copies of plays by Dedwydd Jones, with printed leaflets and covering letter [?1963x1973].

The file comprises correspondence, 1955-1984 (with gaps), including draft letters by Glyn Jones, relating to The valley, the city, the village (London, 1956 and 1980), mostly from the publishers, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, and includes letters from Jack Jones (copy), Raymond Garlick, Gwyn Jones (2), Gwyn Thomas, Les Faber, Elwyn Davies, Aneirin Talfan Davies, Elwyn Evans, A. G. Prys-Jones (2), and Roland Mathias. Some letters contain references to The island of apples. -- Also included are royalty statements, 1956-1960 and 1980-1983, drafts of extracts from the novel which appear to have been adapted for radio [1963], miscellaneous notes, 1956-1958, printed reviews of the novel, 1956-1957, and a copy of the introduction to the 1980 reprint of the book.

The file comprises manuscript, typescript and printed copies of stories, [1930x1944], included in The water music (London, 1944), with some related notes. In addition the file contains letters, 1944-1947, 1951, and 1966, mostly from the publishers, George Routledge and Sons Ltd (later Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd), including letters from E. Prosser Rhys, Aneirin Talfan Davies, and Woodrow Wyatt (2), and a French translation of the story 'Bowen, Morgan and Williams'. Also included are royalty statements, and other related papers regarding the publication of the book.

Collected poems

The file comprises manuscript and typescript drafts, and some printed copies, of poems included in The collected poems of Glyn Jones, compiled and edited by Meic Stephens (Cardiff, 1996). The poems were composed from the early 1930s, and most had previously appeared in published form. Some are accompanied by related notes.

The file comprises correspondence, 1964-1971, including draft letters by Glyn Jones, relating to The Dragon Has Two Tongues (London, 1968), mostly from the literary agents, Laurence Pollinger Ltd, and publishers, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, and includes letters from Brynmor Jones (4), Gerald Morgan, Gwyn Thomas, Maxwell Fraser, Gwyn Jones (2), Keidrych Rhys, D. A number of letters concern permission to quote from the works of writers featured in the book and the Welsh Arts Council prize awarded to Glyn Jones for the work; some letters contain references to The Island of Apples. -- Also included are royalty statements and other related papers including manuscript drafts of sections of the essay on Dylan Thomas, and a hand-painted design by Glyn Jones for the dust jacket. In addition, the file contains a programme of the Theatr Clwyd Company production 'My People', 1980, based on Caradoc Evans's short stories, which includes an extract from The dragon has two tongues; and printed notes regarding the television series 'The dragon has two tongues', 1985.
