Court Book containing records of proceedings at courts leet or views of frankpledge for the manor and franchise of Rhuddlan, 1794-1841. The leet courts were held once a year, in October or November, except in the years 1809 and 1827 when there were Easter courts which appear to have been summoned solely for the purpose of making perambulations. From 1807 the words 'with the Court Baron' are introduced into the headings. The lords of the manor from 1794 to 1808 were Catherine Stapleton, spinster, Watkin Williams, esquire, Elizabeth his wife, the Rev. William Davies Shipley, clerk, dean of St Asaph, and Barbara Yonge, spinster. In 1809 Watkin Williams is succeeded by Elizabeth Williams, widow. In 1815 the name of Catherine Stapleton is replaced by that of Dame Frances Cotton, widow. In 1825 the lords are the Rev. William Davies Shipley, Barbara Yonge, Hester Maria Cotton, spinster, and William Shipley Conway, esquire. In 1826 Lady Sophia Mainwaring takes the place of the Rev. William Davies Shipley. In 1837 the name of Barbara Yonge disappears, followed by that of Lady Mainwaring in 1838. The record of every court generally consists of a suit roll, names of constables and bailiffs, the panel of jurors, presentments, and the signatures of jurors and affeerors, but there are no suit rolls for the years 1831-1837, 1840-1. A foolscap sheet containing a copy of the roll of the view of frankpledge with the court of James Russell Stapleton, esquire, and Ellenor Conway, spinster, held at Ruddlan, Oct. 19, 1732, is pinned to the second folio of the volume. [Paper; 136 folios; 320 x 200 mm.; bound in half calf; inscribed on the front cover -'Rhuddlan Leet Curt Book.'].

The volume begins with the records of an adjournment of the court of William Shipley Conway, esquire, and Hester Maria Cotton, spinster, held for a perambulation of the boundaries of the manor, 3 May 1842. This is followed by the records of proceedings at Michaelmas lets from 1842 to 1849. William Shipley Conwy became sole lord of the manor in 1845. The court leet of 1849 certified a perambulation of the boundaries. The remaining courts which are recorded were also summoned to perambulate. They were held 4-5 Dec. 1861, and 14-15 May 1877. The lord of the manor in 1877 was Conwy Grenville Hercules Rowley Conwy, esquire. The following papers are placed in the volume: (a) Bill of John Davies, Blackmoor's Head, Ruthland, for Eating and Ale and Beer, Michaelmas Leet, 1760; (b) Receipt from Daniel Jones to Miss Stapleton and sisters for the expenses of a leet and walking the boundaries, 1765. (Receipted Dec. 21); (c) Printed notice of a court leet for the perambulation of the boundaries of the manor of Rhyddlan, Dec. 4, 1861; (d) Copies (and extracts) of the records of perambulations of the manor of Rhuddlan made in 1807, 1808, and 1849, and the deputation of the stewardship of the manor to William Bell, Nov. 11, 1861;. (E) Letters to W. Conwy Bell, esquire, from Charles Howlett, S. R. Scargill Bird, and Messrs. R.E.G. & E.F.Kirk, in answer to inquiries for copies of grants of the manor of Rhuddlan, July 28-Sept. 16, 1908, with extracts of entries relating to the manor and franchise of Rhuddlan taken from documents in the Public Record Office. [Paper; 23 folios and a large number of blank leaves, with loose papers inserted as specified above; 325 x 205 mm.; bound in half calf.].
