[Private Goethe, Pembrey]

Studio portrait of an American serviceman with three qualification badges including Sharpshooter with rifle clasp and Expert with auto-rifle clasp. The negative has been inscribed "Pte Goethe, Pembrey." As other portraits of US servicemen also have Pembrey after their names it is probable that they were stationed at Pembrey. He can be further identified as an infantryman in the 28th Division.

All are wearing bandoliers The photograph has been taken in front of the premises of "William & Walter James, Auctioneers, Valuers, Land Agents & Surveyors" presumably at 9 Carmarthen Street, Llandeillo. No wound stripes or overseas chevrons are visible suggesting the photo dates from the years before the war. One member is wearing an Imp‬erial Service Badge indicating that they are Territorial soldiers, not regular army.
