Papers from a case brought in the Court of King’s Bench heard at Hereford Assizes, by Thomas Clayton, plaintiff, lessee of Margaret Pryse and the trustees of Lewis Pryse her late husband, against the previous tenant, John Smith of London, in a plea of trespass and ejectment in order to recover the lead and copper mines at Cwmsymlog or Blaen Cwmsymlog in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1791. The file includes the pleas; writs summoning witnesses to testify; draft declarations in ejectment; briefs for the plaintiff, reciting the demise by Margaret Pryse to John Smith in 1787; bills of costs; affidavits; court orders; and letters to John Jones of Machynlleth, attorney for Margaret Pryse, from John Marshall of Grays Inn; and Edward Loveden Loveden at Woodstock.

Schedules of documents relating to legal cases

Schedules mainly of books and papers (1641-1859), taken by J.G. Williams from the muniments chest at Gogerddan and delivered to Parry and Atwood, or in the ‘tin box’ for various trials at Cardigan, 1853-1859, including the Dolrhyddlan cause, Clark and Dickinson relating to Esgair Hir mine, and the royalty received from mines in the manor of Genau’r-glyn by the lords of the manor, together with a pedigree of the Clement family, and extracts from Meyrick’s History of Cardiganshire and from Bainbridge.

Guardianship of the children of Pryse Loveden

Papers relating to the guardianship and maintenance of the children of Pryse Loveden of Gogerddan, who died in 1855. They include draft affidavits of Margaretta Jane, his widow, and Edward Lewis Pryse, in support of a summons by the High Court of Chancery for the guardianship of Pryse Loveden, Margaret Pryse and Caroline Agnes Loveden, copies of baptism records, 1838, 1841; and cases and opinions on raising portions for the maintenance of the younger children, and for repairs to Gogerddan mansion during the minority of Pryse Loveden (the yoounger), 1856-1858.

Original envelope addressed to J.G. Williams containing a letter by Boys and Tweedie, solicitors, 1857, sending copies of legal papers and other documents relating to lead mining on the Gogerddan estate. These include the bill of complaint to the High Court of Chancery by Edward Pryse of Gogerddan against Lewis Lewis of the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, defendant, for trespass and mining on the common of Brynmawr in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, adjoining the defendant’s property of Llanerchyclwyde (boundaries described) with a map attached [1693x1697]; a bill of loading of Cwmsymlog ore onto the ship, Royal Fancy, 1755; proposals for mining leases to Robert Morris and Thomas Morris, and copies of papers in a lawsuit between John Pughe Pryse, plaintiff, and John Lloyd and Maria Charlotta, his wife, [c 1753] -1754.

Dispute at Derwenlas not in litigation

Papers from a dispute, avoiding litigation, relating to land claimed by Rees Williams of Derwenlas, Montgomeryshire, as part of Tycoch but claimed by Mrs Jones of Hengwrt Uchaf, Dolgellau, as part of Morben Isaf, or as being in common between Morben Isaf and Mr Loveden’s farm of Tynohir, and the impounding of John Evans’pig, 1857. The file comprises mainly letters to and by J.G. Williams, Rees Williams, and the solicitors, together with evidence of witnesses and a small map.

Arbitration award : intrusion by Pryse family into crown lands, manor of Perfedd

Arbitration award of Henry Manisty of Her Majesty’s Counsel, following an information brought by the Attorney General in the Court of the Exchequer against Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, Edward Lewis Pryse of Peithyll and George Watkin Rice of Llwynybrain, defendants, for intrusion into common land belonging to the Crown in the manor of Perfedd, Cardiganshire, 1865; and enclosures. 1864,1888.

Mortgages

Mortgages by successive members of the Pryse family to private individuals and to the Crown Life Assurance Company, mainly of parts of the Gogerddan estate situated in Aberystwyth, Ceulan a Maes-mawr, Cynnull Mawr, Cyfoethybrenin, Elerch, Faenor, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Llangynfelyn, and Trefeurig, 1617-1895, also incoporating the Abernantbychan estate in Penbryn, Troed-y-aur, Betws Ifan, Llangrannog, Blaenporth and Llangynllo, Cardiganshire, in 1882; and mortgages of the annuities and life assurance policies of Sir Edward John Webley Parry Pryse, 1896-1910. The mortgaged properties include the manor of Genau’r-glyn and Park Bodvage (Lodge Park), 1719-1732, Cwm Bwa, Cefnerglodd and Tyn-y-pwll, 1791-1839, Bryngwyn Ganol and Cronwen, 1829-1878, and Bronygof, 1841-1851. This series also contains abstracts of mortgages affecting Gogerddan and Nanteos, 1738-[post1763], and a collateral security on lands in Begeli and Tenby, Pembrokeshire, 1863-1873. Several of the mortgages recite parts of the Pryse family settlements. They also contain details of the mortgagees: their names, their trustees and recitals of their wills and family settlements.

Mortgages of Tythyn Nant y Perfedd, Elerch

Two mortgages of Tythen Nant Perfedd in the township of Elerch and parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, with associated bonds and defeasances, 1618-1710. The first mortgage, for £160 by Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan to Reginald Williams of Elerch, also includes land called Llayn y Pant Coch in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, a messuage called Kemyniog in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr and Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, and Yr Istrade Goch, otherwise Kemynog, and Ty yn Nant y Twrch in Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1618. The second mortgage, for £50, is by his great-grandson Sir Richard Pryse to Thomas ap Hugh, 1668, with successive assignments to Catherin Hugh of Elerch, 1692, Hugh Pugh of Cwmbiga in Trefeglwys, Montgomeryshire, 1710, and Thomas Hugh of Camddwr Mawr, Llanbadarn Fawr, 1724.

Mortgage of Estyn Parke yr Odyn, Y Llaine Ar Hen Allt Walter, etc., Faenor

Assignment to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1674, of a moiety of Estyn Parke yr Odyn, otherwise called Parke yr Ardd, Y Llaine Ar Hen Allt Walter, Y Parke Kanol, Y Parke Istyn and Ffynnon Ddu in the township of Faenor Isaf, Llanbadarn Fawr, by John Herbert of Dolegors, Cardiganshire, and Rees Lloyd of Llanbadarn Fawr, administrators of Thomas Griffith of Aberystwyth, to whom Sir Richard Pryse had previously mortgaged the properties for £100 in 1662/3.

Mortgages of Bryngwynganol and Cronwen, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn

Two successive mortgages by Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, of Tythin Bryngwyn or Bryngwyn Ganol in the parish of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn,. The first, for £800, is to trustees of Elizabeth, wife, of John Pughe of Tynrhyd, 1829, followed by an assignment by her surviving trustee and beneficiaries of her will to David Pritchard of Ceniarth, Montgomeryshire, 1845. The second, for £1200, also including Cronwen, is to John Evans of Derwenlas in the parish of Machynlleth, 1845, with accounts and a schedule of deeds, 1615-1845, followed by a reconveyance by David Thomas of Derwenlas, surviving executor of John Evans, to Sir Pryse Pryse, 1876

Mortgage of Gogerddan lands to James Charles de Wynter

Mortgage, 1892, for £5,500 by Sir PP and PPP to James Charles de Wynter of Pinhoe, Devon, Lieut.-Col. Edwin Borradaile of Kensington Palace and Rev. Walter Collyns Baker of Balcombe Rectory, Evercreech, near Bath, charged on the Gogerddan estates in accordance with the family settlement of 1880, subject to a previous mortgage of 1889 and other encumbrances, followed by releases and a reconveyance to Sir Pryse Pryse, his solicitor and trustees, 1895. The incumbrances are shown in the schedules annexed; named properties include Glanyrafon, Glanymor, Nantcellanfach, Tanyfoel, Glanfraed, the Cwmcynfelyn estate, the Lion Royal Hotel, Llain Arthur, the Black Lion and other premises in Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Aberystwyth and Llanbadarn Fawr.
