Trusts by William Pughe and John Pughe

Deeds relating to several different trusts: William Pughe of Mathafarn, to take delivery in trust of a demise by William Pugh of Bodilan to trustees to charge £150 on his estate (see endorsement), 1701; William Pughe as trustee for the payment of the debts of John Owen, brother of Hugh Owen of Caerberllan, Merioneth, 1702; William and John Pughe, trustees of the marriage settlement of Thomas Owen and Anne, second daughter of Cornelius LeBrun of Nanteos, 1707; William Pughe, mortgagee and trustee of Meredith Rees of Glynceirig, Montgomeryshire, and Mary his wife, to ensure financial provision for their family out of property in Llanwrin, 1715; and a release by John Pughe and Christopher Dominick of Chiswick, and Elizabeth and Frances, their respective wives, daughters of Sir John Scudamore, of the manor of Moreton Jefferyes and farms in Moreton Jefferyes, Much Cowarne and Much Martley (?Marcle), Herefordshire, to Thomas Dominick in trust, subject to a pre-existing mortgage paid by the said wives, 1717/18.

Trusts by Richard ap Hugh ap Ieuan, Mary Pughe and Richard Pughe

Two deeds and a bond relating to separate trusts: Richard ap Hugh ap Ieuan of Penegoes, of land in Isygarreg purchased from Lewis ap Moris ap David ap Ll’n of Machynlleth, to the use of Henry Vichan ap David Lloyd (Henry Vaughan), 1566; Mary Pughe of Dolyvonddy for the wardships and marriages of Susan and Elizabeth Pugh, her daughters, heirs of Richard Pugh, 1633; and Richard Pugh, sometime of the Canary Islands and now of Llanwrin, merchant, trustee of a conveyance by John Pughe, of premises in Llanwrin for his elder brother Evan Pugh, practitioner in physic, 1654.

Trust of the will Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth

Papers relating to the execution of the will of Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth, Montgomeryshire [d. 1661] by Gabriel Salesbury [nephew and devisee of Charles Salesbury, the original executor] and the resulting lawsuits in the High Court of Chancery, 1670-1671. The file includes a defeasance of a recognizance in statute staple in £10,000 made by Edward Vaughan of Glan-llyn, Merioneth, to permit Gabriel Salesbury quiet possession of properties in the townships of Eglwysegl and Dinbren [Llangollen], and to imdemnify the executors against claims to the estate of Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth, 1670; a rental of the Llangollen estate [c. 1670]; and part of a conveyance by William Salesbury of Rug and Gabriel Salesbury of Grays Inn to Edward Vaughan, of properties in Montgomeryshire, Denbighshire, Merioneth and Salop (unspecified), devised by the will of Edward Vaughan to Charles Salesbury, late of Bachymbyd, Denbighshire, 1671

Trust documents of the Caethle estate

Deeds, 1505-1712, relating to the Caethle estate in the parish of Tywyn, Merioneth, owned by the Vaughan family, for whom William Pughe of Mathafarn was a trustee in 1677. The names of John Lloyd of Maesypandy and the Nanney family recur frequently [probably as earlier trustees to William Vaughan]. The Gogerddan family also appears to have had an early interest, as shown by the will of John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1584 (see ref.), and a lease of a property in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) made by Sir Richard Pryse in 1604/5. James Pryse married into the family of Ynysymaengwyn, also in the locality of Tywyn. The series contains title deeds of properties mainly in the townships of Caethle, Aberdyfi (Aberdovey), Cefnrhos and Botalog, and St Cadfan’s lands, 1505-1668; mortgages, 1664-1676; family settlements which pre-date the start of the trust, 1591-1629, as well as deeds within the operation of the trust itself, 1660-1726. There is also a file of deeds of the Nanney and Lloyd families, which has been linked tentatively to the Caethle trust, 1681-1701.

Trust deeds of the Pughe family of Mathafarn (misc.)

Deeds and documents relating to miscellaneous trusts involving members of the Pughe family of Mathafarn, either as trustees or as parties to trust deeds of other family members. The two files relate to trusts involving Richard ap Hugh ap Ieuan, Mary Pughe and Richard Pughe, 1566-1654, and William and John Pughe, 1701-1718.

Trespass and ejectment from Lodge Park

Original bundle of papers in an action of trespass and ejectment from a park called Bodvage Park and a messuage called The Lodge, both in the parish of Llangynfelyn, Cardiganshire, 1662-1679, between William Pleasted, plaintiff, and Sir Thomas Pryse [of Gogerddan], defendant, heard at Hereford assizes, which premises were leased by Sir Richard Pryse, the defendant's brother, to William Sumner of Pollicott, Buckinghamshire, in 1661 as security for £200 and which were subsequently leased by Henry Sumner of Dinton, Buckinghamshire, William Sumner's son, to the plaintiff in Jan. 1678. The file contains receipts, briefs, a letter from Thomas Harborne of Aylesbury, 1669, and particulars of documents used in the trial, 1679.

Trespass and ejectment from lands in Aberystwyth, Cwm Rheidol, Llanbadarn Fawr, etc.

Papers in an action of trespass and ejectment by Edward Mathews, as lessee of Sir John Wittewronge, plaintiff against Sir Richard Pryse defendant., relating to lands in Aberystwyth, Dynas, Cwm Rheidol, Rhyd Onnen and Llanbadarn Fawr (other lands named), previously purchased by Lady Gwen Pryse, some of which had belonged to Rees Griffith, attainted, and part of which were conveyed to Sir John Whittewronge and John Jones [the regicide], 1661-1662. Bill of complaint in the High Court of Chancery by Robert Owen the elder of Radnall, Salop, plaintiff, against John Pughe of Mathafarn for trespass and ejectment from farm in Ffrith Tafolwern, Llanbryn-mair, which had been leased by the Crown, together with Ffrith Keven ar Ddeg in Cemais, to the plaintiff’s father, Sir Roger Owen [c. 1635]

Trespass and eejectment at Esgair Fraith

Pleadings in an action of trespass and ejectment brought in the Court of the Exchequer, heard at the assizes in Hereford, by David Lewis, lessee of Margaret Pryse, Benjamin Holloway and the other trustees of Lewis Pryse, plaintiff, against David Morgan, Owen Owens, clerk, Richard Jones, John Humphrey (?Hughes), Owen Humphrey and David Cadwallader, defendants, from the lead and copper mines under Esgair Fraith in the parish of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1780-1781. The file contains a copy of the case; the pleas, the brief for the plaintiff, reciting the wills of Thomas Pryse, 1774 (recte 1742) and Lewis Pryse, 1779; bills and receipts for legal costs; numerous writs; depositions of witnesses; a list of Herefordshire jury men; the proofs; letters to Edward Hughes of Aberystwyth, attorney, and to Edward Loveden Loveden, mainly from Edward Kinaston of the Exchequer Office; and an earlier agreement by John Lewes of Carmarthen, agent for John Pughe Pryse, to Owen Humphrey of Little Chappel, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, for the demise of the lead mines at Esgair Fraith, previously leased to John Mostyn, 1772

Trefeurig (Tyddyn Trefeurig and misc. properties)

Title deeds for houses and lands in the township of Trefeurig in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1565-1636, and a lease agreement, 1900. Properties include Tyddyn Tre Veirige (Trefeurig), Tyddyn Tale ye Glanne and Tyddyn Blaen Cum Ridole; Tythen Kellie'r Meirch; Tythin Ieuan ap Ritherch, received by Richard Pryse of Gogerddan from John Watkyne of Penyberth, in exchange for a messuage and a fulling mill, 1593; a dairy house lying in Yr Helva, and lands called Tyr Kaye Owen and Y Llayn Benvayne, purchased by Richard Pryse from John ap Richard Watkyn of Machynlleth, 1611. The file also includes a bond by the tenant of Sir John Pryse for the repair of a grist mill in Trefeurig and for ditching (boundaries include Klawdd y Gwar Gwyllt), 1578; and an agreement by Jonah Williams of Tynrhyd, Devil’s Bridge, with Sir Pryse Pryse to take four fields in Trefeurig, near old Blaencwm House and Brynhyfryd, 1900.

Trefeurig (Banc y Darren)

A mortgage by Thomas Morgan of Llwynllantesni Farm to Isaac Thomas of Tynewydd Cwmsebon, of a recently erected house at Darren Bank in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1879, followed by a release to the mortgagee, 1881; and a conveyance by Sir Pryse Pryse to William Garland of Symlog House, Cwmsymlog, of two parcels of Brynmawr sheepwalk near East Darren mine, 1891. Trefeglwys (Glyntrefnant)

Deeds for the sale by John Gwyn of Dolybachoe in the township of Glyntrefnant and parish of Trefeglwys, and Margaret Gwyn, his mother, to John Pughe of Mathafarn, of the capital messuage of Tythin Dolybachoe and lands which were the inheritance of John Gwyn, the vendor’s late grand-father, in Trefeglwys, Llanbryn-mair and Penegoes, except for Tythun Esgir Goch which was mortgaged to John ap Evan Howell, 1664-1666; and a lease back from John Pughe to John Gwyn, 1665/6.

Original bundle of deeds labelled ‘Pryse Hafan Tramway, rep[ur]ch[a]se of Land’, recording the sale by Matthew Lewis Vaughan Davies of Tanybwlch to Sir Pryse Pryse and his trustees of the farms of Tynyllwyn, Pantcoch, Dolrhyddlan, Waunhesgog and Cyneiniog in the parishes of Llanfihangel Genau’-glyn, Llangynfelyn and Llanbadarn Fawr, 1875; the sale by Sir Pryse Pryse to Thomas Molyneux of Earlestown, Lancashire, and the Plynlimon and Hafan Company Limited, of Glanfread, Tynycae, Llettyllwyd, Factory Lands, Cwmere, etc. and a strip of land near Allt-ddu, 1895, 1898; and a reconveyance by Benjamin Cookson of Liverpool, liquidator, and the Midland Bank, to Sir Pryse Pryse, 1901. Deeds relating to the Priory estate, Cardigan, 1651-1721. They comprise leases by Hector Philipps, 1651, and Lewis Pryse of Gogerddan, 1708-1712, of the Priory, Surgeons Hold, the Great House, the Green Close and Ffynnon Wen, situated in Cardigan, Langoedmor, Ferwig, Tre-main and Mwnt; a deed for the purchase of Ffynnonwen, Dole y Bont, Plas yr Havod Vach and other properties in Llanglydwen, Carmarthenshire, 1721, and a schedule of deeds, 1648-1721.

Tithe rent charge demands and receipts

Receipt to Oliver Lloyd for the apportioning of tithe rent charge in lieu of tithes in the parishes of Troed-yr-aur and Blaen-porth, 1841; and demands and receipts for tithe rent charges on properties belonging to the Abernantbychan estate in the parishes of Penbryn and Pembroke (St Mary) 1892-1906.
