Letters to Thomas Pryse, Thomas Lloyd and John Lloyd

Letters to Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan from David Roberts of Rug, Nurse Jones of Corwen, and Howell Wynne of Corwen. 1738-1743, and correspondence between Thomas Lloyd of Abertrinant, John Lloyd of Rug and Oswestry, 1748-1755, with one letter from John Pughe Pryse, 1762. The main subjects are described at series level. Several of the letters mention Madam Salesbury’s clothing charity and other charity for the poor at Corwen. Two letters discuss the political stance of Gogerddan in the elections for Cardigan Borough, 1747, and Cardiganshire, 1755, mentioning Thomas Powell of Nanteos, Herbert Lloyd of Peterwell, Sir John Philipps, Thomas Johnes of Llanfair and Wilmot Vaughan of Crosswood (Trawsgoed). Cases of Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1675) and Thomas Pryse

Papers from legal cases involving Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan (d. 1675). and his brother Thomas Pryse, 1657-1679. The two most substantial files relate to actions of trespass and ejectment against the Pryses from lands in Aberystwyth, Dynas, Cwm Rheidol, Rhyd Onnen and Llanbadarn Fawr, 1661-1662, and from Bodvage Park and the Lodge, Llangynfelyn, 1662-1679. Other cases concern suit of mill, 1657, and actions for debt, 1666-1673.

Trespass and ejectment from Lodge Park

Original bundle of papers in an action of trespass and ejectment from a park called Bodvage Park and a messuage called The Lodge, both in the parish of Llangynfelyn, Cardiganshire, 1662-1679, between William Pleasted, plaintiff, and Sir Thomas Pryse [of Gogerddan], defendant, heard at Hereford assizes, which premises were leased by Sir Richard Pryse, the defendant's brother, to William Sumner of Pollicott, Buckinghamshire, in 1661 as security for £200 and which were subsequently leased by Henry Sumner of Dinton, Buckinghamshire, William Sumner's son, to the plaintiff in Jan. 1678. The file contains receipts, briefs, a letter from Thomas Harborne of Aylesbury, 1669, and particulars of documents used in the trial, 1679.

Edward Pryse and Dame Dorothy Pryse vs Sir Hugh Middleton, Sir Carbery Pryse and others : debt

Papers deriving from a case brought before the High Court of Chancery in 1683 by Edward Pryse and Dame Dorothy Pryse, executors of Sir Thomas Pryse, plaintiffs, against Sir Hugh Middleton, Sir Carbery Pryse, infant (per John Herbert his guardian) and William Wogan, defendants, concerning the refusal of Sir Hugh Middleton to pay a sum due upon a recognizance for the payment of £2100 acknowledged in 1639 by Sir William Middleton to Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1651), which recognizance descended to Sir Richard Pryse the younger and thence to Sir Thomas Pryse, and the refusal of William Wogan to honour a former agreement by Sir Hugh Middelton for payment to Sir Thomas Pryse, claiming that £2000 was due to Sir Carbery Pryse as nephew and heir of Sir Thoms Pryse. The file contains the bill of complaint, a copy bill and breviat, 1683, together with the renunciation by Dame Elizabeth Pryse of the administration of the goods of her late husband, Sir Richard Pryse, 1675, breviat of a bill by Edward and Dame Dorothy Pryse against John Herbert and Dame Elizabeth Pryse, his now wife, defendants, 1682, and other papers relevamt to the case, 1661-1682.

Additional loose bills and receipts

A bundle of additional loose bills and receipts (1664-1836) which were found during the cataloguing of the Gogerddan estate records, the majority relating to the management of the household and estate including receipts and bills for household sundries and estate maintenance including grain, thatch, lime, bricks, services, livestock, and carriages, as well as receipts and bills for payment of debts and rents. The bundle also includes a number of papers (1741-1762) detailing schedules and valuations of damages relating to Neuadd mine, Llangynfelyn.
