Letter book of P.P. Pryse and Sir Pryse Pryse

Pages from a letter book, 14 June 1896 – 10 January 1906. The majority are addressed to Sir Pryse Pryse, Edward John Webley-Parry-Pryse and other Pryse family members, George, Florence, Lewes and Herbert about estate business, hunting, family finances and personal matters. Subjects include Pryse Pryse Pryse’s appointment as estate manager in 1895 (p. 8); the character of Owen Davies, huntsman, 1896 (pp. 4-5); the Hafan Quarry lease and the route of Hafan tramway through Alltdu and Ffosfydir (passim); rights to minerals and sheepwalks in Braich Garw Common, 1896 (p. 10, 22); a prescription recipe for animal medication (p. 91); the presentation of a testimonial to Sir Pryse Pryse by the tenants, 1899 (p. 139); and the conversion of Penrhyn-coch into a new parish, 1901 (pp. 145-148, 188, 190)

‘Documents re. Gogerddan and Mathafarn estates’

Documents mainly concerning the financial and legal affairs of the Gogerddan and Mathafarn estates, 1660-1790. They include a discharge by Edward Perry to Sir Richard Pryse for £75, 1660; a perambulation of the boundaries of the manor of Glyndyfrdwy, 1661; a sequestration order against Lewis Pryse in the suit of Mr Jodrell, plaintiff, 1707; schedules of mortgages and bond debts of John Pryse, Walter Pryse, John Pughe of Mathafarn, and Thomas Pryse, executor of Thomas Pryse, his step-father 1715-1738; a letter (copy) to Sir William Williams about a trespass by Charles and Rodericke Richardes; Lord Harrington’s letter (copy) with Mr Robinson’s translation concerning the war of the Austrian Succession, 1741; a ‘schedule of papers brought from the closet’; a list of charges of John Lloyd and Maria Charlotta his wife, defendants in a suit by John Pughe Pryse, infant, 1757; a declaration of trust by John Pughe Pryse in a mortgage by Thomas Johnes of Abermad, 1761; inventories of goods in rooms at Gogerddan belonging to John Pughe Pryse, 1768; and a receipt to Edward Loveden Loveden for documents relating to his Cardiganshire estate, 1790.

Letters and papers of Thomas Pryse

Miscellaneous letters and documents of Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan which include papers of Roger Salusbury of Rug and [John] Pughe of Mathafarn, 1701-1748. The letters to Roger Salusbury are from Kenerick Eyton of Plas Isa, R. Green, and John Williams of Chester, 1711-1718. The correspondents of Thomas Pryse include Moses Owen of London and C[harles] Ll[oyd, William Powell [of Nanteos], John Humffreys of Llanfyllin and Llangedwyn, Will. Vaughan, John Jones of Tyglyn, Lord Lisburne, Rev.Vaughan Jones of Cemais, J. Davies of Gogerddan, Robert Smyth of Machynlleth, Wythen Jones of Cefen Pennarth, George Jones of Rhoscellan, Edward Jones at Worcester, Thomas Lloyd of Bronwydd, R. Jones of Llanwrin, George Parry of Ruthin, and David Lewes, 1719-1740. The main subjects are described at series level. Other topics of interest include the plight of Lord Lisburne’s sister, 1739, and the Pembrokeshire election, 1739. The letters to [John Pughe] of Mathafarn are from the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Bar. Jones in London reporting the death of Col. Sidney Godolphin, and John Humphreys, together with some outgoing and third-party letters of the Pughe family, 1732-1733. The file also contains various bills and and receipts of the Rug and Mathafarn estates, 1701-1736.; a rental for Voty [Gwyddelwern] and Berthddu, 1711; Ruthin arrears, 1715; accounts of Thomas Pryse and his trustee, 1725, 1748; legal papers involving Lewis Lewis of Dolyclettwr, Rice Llwyd, and the Salusbury family, 1728-1737; evidence concerning the toll of Pentre’rallt in Machynlleth; and queries on the descent of lands purchased by Thomas Pryse of Dole after making his will in 1729.

‘Old Papers and Receipts, many relating to Mathafarn’

Original bundle labelled as per title but also including some items relating to Gogerddan and the Brecosnhire estate, mainly dated 1710-1781. The contents relate mainly to the settlement of the debts of William Pughe, John Pughe, Thomas Pryse and John Pughe Pryse .They include accounts, rentals, and letters from agents and creditors. Items of interest include ‘John Pughe’s case’ [c. 1726], ‘debts and incumbrances of John Pughe’, 1744; Mr Powell’s charges for chief rents on Gogerddan, 1733-1744; a table of fees of the court baron of Cyfeiliog [1730s]; a case of trespass and ejectment in the court of the manor of Caereinion, 1737; rentals or rent accounts of Gogerddan, Cardigan Priory and Glanmeryn [c. 1737], Mathafarn, 1749, Cwm Cynvyl, 1774, Fynon Caradoc and Brynbanadle, 1755-1767, and chief rents of Gwynionydd Iscoed, (Watermark 1811); the bill of Doctor Alban Thomas for attendance on Thomas Pryse, 1744/5, an extract from the Gogerddan labourers’ book, 1751; and a letter to [Edward Loveden Loveden] from George Morgan of Brecon about the sale of the manor of Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn, 1781. The file also contains a draft family settlement by Richard Lloyd of Mabws [pre-1757].

Probate records of the Morice family

Probate records mainly of the Morice family of Bridge Street, Aberystwyth. comprising the will of William Hallen Morice, 1853, and documents relating to the probate of the wills of Anne Morice, widow, and her son, James Morice, 1873-1877; and the will of David Jenkin of Blaencarrog, Llanddeiniol, 1813.

Exercise book of Catherine Watkin of Moelycerney, dated 1821, containing copies of English and Welsh poems, mainly on moralistic themes [1821]-1824. They include 'Royal Genealogy or The Parents’ Poetical Present', 'The Fire Side' by Dr Cotton, 'Hedyw ac Efory' by Robert Williams, 'Y Benglog yn Llefaru' by Mr W. Royalty returns and accounts of ore sold from Bronfloyd mine, Cardiganshire, since 1855, with some covering letters, 1858-1867, 1880-1881, 1886, 1891.

Mid Wales Mines Company rpyalty returns

Original hard-back folder labelled ‘Mid Wales Mines Co. Bryn yr Afr Mine’. It contains royalty returns due upon ore sold mainly from Bryn yr Afr mine but also from Blaen Ceulan, Esgair Hir, Hafan, East Darren, Neuadd-yr-ynys, and the Mid Wales Mines, 1881-1907.

Gogerddan mine and quarry leases and other deeds

Deeds relating to the mines in Cardiganshire belonging to the Gogerddan estate, 1656-1918 (mainly 1849-1901). They comprise mainly leases and agreements made between the Pryse family and individual prospectors or mining companies to mine for lead, copper, silver and quarry stone under various farms in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, and under the common or waste lands in the lordship of Genau’r-glyn. The mine workings extended under single farms or under groups of several farms. The most substantial of the files relate to the mines and companies at Grogwynion, 1656-1887, Esgair Hir, Esgair Fraith, Henfwlch and Lluest y Gravie, 1696-1900, Tal-y-bont, Tyhen, Allt y Crib, Camdwr, etc., 1744-[c. 1910], Cwmbrwyno, Cefn Cwmbrwyno, Nantyrarian, Llywernog, etc. 1762-1886, Cwmsymlog, Darren, Llettyspence, etc., 1762-1889, Darren Fawr, Darren Fach and Llwynllantesni (Cwmsebon) 1783-1868, Ceulan a Maes-mawr, 1852-1899, Bryn yr Afr, 1879-1910, and East Darren, 1888-1904. Many of the documents contain detailed recitals of former leases, some of which are not extant here. They name the numerous individuals and companies involved in the mining ventures. They also describe the physical locations, water supplies, access roads, methods of working the mines and their maintenance. Several lessees had their leases revoked for not adhering to the conditions specified and several went into liquidation. The documents include original leases, counterparts, drafts and copies. This series also includes one file of schedules of leases (Watermark 1851)-1888; a file of mortgages involving the Cambrian Mining Company, 1881-1884; and notices of breaches of covenant, 1911. Maps and plans are incorporated or attached to many of the documents.

Grogwynion mining leases and agreements

Leases and agreements relating to the lead mines at Grogwynion in the parish of Llanafan, 1656, 1740-1887. They include a partnership agreement between James Lewes of Coedmor and John Vaughan of Trawsgoed for the mines in Llanafan and Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, 1656; leases by Walter Pryse of St Andrews, Holborn, Lewis Pryse of Woodstock and Wilmot Lord Viscount Lisburne of Trawsgoed to the Mine Adventurers of England and to James Townsend of London, executor of Chauncy Townsend, 1740-1771; leases by the Pryse family of Gogerddan to Michael and William Williams of Scorrier House, Gwnnap, Cornwall, John Hayward of Browfort, Wiltshire, John Parry of Glanpaith and John Jones Atwood of Aberystwyth, John Owen of Varn Road, Birmingham, and Hammerton Crump of King William Street, London, 1825-1869; a deed of arrangement and grant of right between Ernest Augustus Mallet Vaughan, Earl of Lisburne, Sir Pryse Pryse and Pryse Pryse Pryse, and the Grogwynion Lead Mining Company Ltd., to make and use levels under Grogwynion, 1881; and a license granted to John Kitto, mining engineer of Llanidloes, 1887. Tal-y-bont, Tyhen, Allt y Crib, Camdwr, etc. mining leases and agreements

Leases, agreements and revocations of former leases relating to several lead mines in the parishes of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Langynfelyn and Llanbadarn Fawr, and the townships of Elerch, Ceulan a Maes-mawr and Henllys, 1744-[1910]. They refer mainly to mines under the farms of Tal-y-bont, Tyhen, Allt y Crib, Berthllwyd, Penybank, and Cefnerglodd, Camdwr Mawr, Camdwr Bach, Camdwr Bitty, Bwlchygarreg, Brynmelyn, Lluestygrafie, Dolrhyddlan, Waunhesgog, Caeneiniog, Bwlch Glas, Alltddu, and Ffosfudr, some of which constituted the Henfwlch mines (1851). Others mention Nant y Cagal, 1744, Tyddyn Evan Gwynn Griffith and Tyddyn y Wern otherwise Bron Llygad Hwrdd, 1765, Llwynadda-goch, 1854, Gwarygraig, 1868, Tyhen, 1872, and Llwynysguborwen [1910]. The earliest is a memorandum for the Flintshire Company to surrender mine works to Thomas Pryse, 1744. The lessors are mostly members of the Pryse family, to John Jones of Aberystwyth, Philip Pugh of Tuglyn and David Morgan the younger of Tal-y-bont, Owen Hugh the elder and the younger, and Hugh Hughs of Tre’r-ddol, William Williamson of Greenfield, Flintshire, John Pryce Eyton of Kinsale, other members of the Williamson and Eyton families, William Lloyd of Cilwrgan and John Davies of Newtown, Montgomeryshire, Samuel Fearon, Peter Stainsby and George White, directors of the Llangynfelyn Mining Company, Henry Francis of Aberystwyth, George Batters of London, Richard Johnson Lawton, Samuel Auchmuty Dickson of Bond Street, Thomas William Wilkinson of London, James Lofthouse of Manchester, Richard Hobson of Leeds and Edwin Green of Havercroft, Wakefield, William Henry Punchard of Saville Place, Bow Road, Middlesex, Edmund Edwards of Northlake, Surrey, the Allt-y-Crib Silver Lead Mining Company, Camdwr Bach Mining Company Limited, Major General James Thomas Harries of Campden Hill, Thomas Molyneux of Earlestown, Lancashire and others, 1765-[1910]. There is also a draft lease agreement by John Jones of Ffosfudr to William Dodd and others of Ruabon, 1742; and an extract from the conveyance of Dolrhyddlan, reserving mineral rights, 1875 (watermark 1894).
